Plantar Fasciitis is a Common Cause of Heel Pain
Plantar fasciitis, which may cause the heel to hurt, feel hot or swell, is inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thin layer of tough tissue supporting the arch of the foot. Repeated microscopic tears of the plantar fascia cause pain. Sometimes plantar fasciitis is called “heel spurs,” but this is not always accurate, since bony growths on the heel may or may not be a factor. Diagnostic testing, such as X-rays, usually is not necessary to diagnose plantar fasciitis, although it may be useful to rule out other potential causes of heel pain. Typically with plantar fasciitis, the pain is worse when first getting out of bed, or is noticeable at the beginning of an activity and gets better as the body warms up. Prolonged standing may cause pain, as well. In more severe cases, the pain may worsen toward the end of the day. There are a number of possible causes for plantar fasciitis and they often work in combination. Tightness of the foot and calf, improper athletic training, stress on the arch or weakness of the foot are potential causes. Shoes that don’t fit, certain play or work actions or overuse (running too fast, too far, too soon) may hurt the plantar fascia. People with low arches, flat feet or high arches are at increased risk of developing plantar fasciitis.

Board-certified physiatrists must complete, in addition to medical school, a four year residency program. This training develops skills in the areas of orthopedics, neurology, and rheumatology. This places the physiatrist in an advantageous position to decide upon the cause of a patient's symptoms: nerve, muscle, joint, bone, ligament, etc. In addition to the conventional use of medications, we have expertise in the use of modalities (hydrotherapy, ultrasound, transcuataneous electrical nerve stimulation, etc.), exercise programs, manual techniques, equipment (splints, corsets, braces), and coordination of therapy programs. While acute pain is a normal sensation triggered in the nervous system to alert you to possible injury and the need to take care of yourself, chronic pain is different. Chronic pain persists. Pain signals keep firing in the nervous system for weeks, months, even years. There may have been an initial mishap sprained back, serious infection, or there may be an ongoing cause of pain arthritis, cancer, ear infection, but some people suffer chronic pain in the absence of any past injury or evidence of body damage. Many chronic pain conditions affect older adults. Common chronic pain complaints include headache, low back pain, cancer pain, arthritis pain, neurogenic pain (pain resulting from damage to the peripheral nerves or to the central nervous system itself), psychogenic pain (pain not due to past disease or injury or any visible sign of damage inside or outside the nervous system).

03:00 AM Mar. 04, 1999 PT Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas have come one step closer to helping patients suffering from one of the most elusive medical mysteries: back pain. The Journal of the American Medical Association published a report Wednesday on percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or PENS. The report said this electro-analgesia technique produces significant acute-pain relief for patients with chronic, debilitating back pain.
    Story Tools
    Today's Top 5 Stories
PENS uses a small electrical current which is passed through acupuncture-like needles. The clinician inserts the needles into the soft tissue and muscle surrounding bones. Doctors said PENS is gaining ground as a technique to ease pain while allowing patients to take fewer analgesic medications, resulting in fewer side effects such as stomach bleeding. The researchers said that patients will also need fewer invasive procedures, such as surgery and spinal-cord stimulation.

My Name is Robyn Bear. I have experienced six miscarriages and know first hand the pain and heartache that women suffer. Men suffer as well, but they grieve differently. Many times my husband held me as I fell to the floor screaming. He cried also, but I know and understand that the pain he feels is different than mine. How could he even begin to understand the emotional pain and emptiness I felt? I comforted myself by reading about miscarriages, but only found books on technical and medical support. I needed to know that I wasn't alone. I needed a book with true stories of women like myself, but I found none. I decided to do one myself. I wanted this book to be supportive and to allow the many suffering parents out there to know that the way that they feel is normal, and that they are not alone. After collecting stories from women all over the world I realized how many of us suffer, and we suffer alone. We learn not to tell anyone about our miscarriages or infertility problems, because of the many well meant, but hurtful comments made by friends, relatives and co-workers. The men and women in this book and on this website tell about the depression they went through, the lack of concentration, their marital problems, and losing job after job because all they can think about is having a child. Some, I am glad to say, have gone on to have a successful pregnancy, while others are still struggling for that happy ending that we all so desperately need and deserve. I decided to put my book on-line for others to read. Please feel free to read all the stories you would like and bookmark my page so you may return. If you would like a hard copy of the book mailed to you please make a minimum donation of $15.00 and a copy will be sent to you.
