, Extension Soils/ Sugarbeet Specialist Although North Dakota is not considered to be part of the "Corn Belt," with good management, farmers can successfully grow high yielding corn. Improved practices such as early planting, adequate plant populations and recommended rates of fertilizer help reduce the influence of adverse weather.
Nutrient Requirements: Nitrogen is the nutrient most often lacking in corn production. It has been determined that 65, 50 and 75 percent of the total accumulation of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, respectively, occurs by silking time, compared with only 45 percent of the total dry matter production by that stage of growth. On the average, approximately 1.2 pounds of nitrogen, 0.5 pounds of phosphate (P O ) and 1.2 pounds of potash (K O) are used to produce a bushel of corn. A large proportion of this is normally supplied by the organic matter and mineral portion of the soil. If the soil cannot supply enough, the supply has to be supplemented with nutrients from other sources.

I. INTRODUCTION
Since magnesium acts like a trace mineral as a cofactor for over 300 enzymes,(24,25) its possible contributory role in genetic diseases involving trace minerals and vitamins, in which arterial disease develops, should be explored. Suggested here is the possibility that the microangiopathy of the common genetic disease, diabetes mellitus, and the cardiomyopathies seen in several inborn errors of metabolism that entail vitamin-dependencies and abnormal mineral metabolism, might also involve function of enzymes in which magnesium is a cofactor.

POISONING
Something was swallowed, smelled, or touched that caused the person to be poisoned. We live in the Chemical Age, and it is taking us down rapidly. Sometimes the ongoing poisoning becomes especially serious. Children are especially sensitive, because they are even less careful than the rest of us. The cause may be medicinal and street drugs, batteries, cosmetics, paints and varnishes, pesticides, cleaning supplies, cosmetics, workplace chemicals, various gases, etc. suppress the immune system. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and prevents free-radical damage. Calcium and magnesium are natural chelating minerals. Selenium enhances the functions of vitamin E. Zinc is a free-radical inhibitor, and helps utilize vitamin A. —Related topics in this book include " Food Poisoning ," " Chemical Poisoning ," "" Aluminum ," " Arsenic ," " Cadmium ," Copper ," " DDT ,"

Much of the research on elucidating the mechanism of action of these agents has focused on AICC and recombinant factor VIIa. Proposed Mechanism of Action of Recombinant Factor VIIa Anti-inhibitor Coagulant Complexes (AICCs) AICCs are composed of various activated and/or inactivated clotting factors, including factors II, VII, IX and X, derived from fresh, human-pooled plasma. Currently, two different AICCs products are marketed; each undergoes a different manufacturing process, resulting in differing amounts of clotting factors in each preparation. The activity of the two agents is also expressed differently; one as factor VIII correctional activity, and the other as AICC units of activity. Potency of AICCs

This extends the range of detecting sometimes fatal genetic disorders, in an unborn baby for instance, from the presence and ratios of certain chemicals in a blood sample. The Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at Potchefstroom University considers that more than 400 human disorders may be caused by mutations of a single gene. Most of the individual diseases are quite rare but collectively their incidence is considerable. Approximately 100 inborn errors of metabolism can now be detected prenatally, most by testing for the primary enzyme defect, some by measuring abnormal amounts of specific metabolites or high molecular weight storage material, and some by demonstrating the mutation at DNA level. Having recently acquired a Micromass Quatro II triple quadrupole LCMS/MS for tandem mass spectrometry, the department has progressed from its earlier gas phase system to a liquid one able rapidly to analyse acylcarnitine metabolites, amino acids and bile acids in whole blood and urine. The apparatus is so versatile that it can also be used for peptide and protein analysis.

    Chapter 5
Of Rights Respecting Services-Means of Acquiring Them
After things , it remains to distribute services : a kind of property sometimes confounded with things-sometimes presenting itself under a distinct form. How many kinds of services are there? As many as there are ways in which man may be useful to man either by procuring good for him, or by preserving him from evil. In the exchange of services which constitutes social intercourse, some are free, some are forced. Those which are required by the law, constitute rights and obligations. I have a right to the services of another; he is in a state of obligation with regard to me: these two terms are correlative. In their origin, all services must have been free: it is only by degrees that the laws have intervened to convert the more important into positive rights. It is thus that the institution of marriage has converted into legal obligations the connexion which formerly was voluntary between the husband and wife, between the father and the children. The law in the same manner has converted into an obligation, in certain states, the support of the poor, a duty which still remains amongst most nations in undefined liberty. These political duties are, with respect to duties purely social, the same as particular inclosures in a vast common, in which a certain kind of cultivation is tended with precautions which insure its success. The same plant might grow in the common, and even be protected by certain conventions; but it would always be subject to more hazards, than in this particular boundary traced by the law, and guaranteed by the public force.

    Examples of Attacks upon Security.
It will not be useless to give Some examples of what I call attacks upon security . It will be a means of more clearly exhibiting the principle, and of showing that what is called unjust in morals, cannot be innocent in politics. Nothing has been more common than to authorize under one name that which would be odious under the other. The history of the Grecian Republics is full of facts of the same kind, always presented in a plausible manner, and calculated to mislead superficial minds. How has reasoning been abused, respecting the division of the lands carried into effect by Lycurgus , to serve as a foundation of his warrior institution, in which, through the most striking inequality, all the rights were on one side and all the servitude on the other. The attacks upon security , which have found so many officious defenders when made by the Greeks and Romans, have not experienced the same indulgence when they have been made by the monarchs of the East. The despotism of a single person has nothing seducing, because it too evidently refers to himself alone, and because there are a million chances of suffering to one of enjoying. But the despotism exercised by the multitude deceives feeble minds by a false image of public good: they place themselves, in imagination, among the great number who command, instead of supposing themselves among the small number who give up and who suffer. Leaving, therefore, the sultans and viziers in peace, we may reckon that their injustices will not be coloured by the flatteries of historians: their reputation serves as an antidote to their example.

Minireview Biotin Metabolism Disorders Xiangyang Wang From the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma 74078 Introduction Most importantly, it was realized that recycling of biotin is essential for maintaining an adequate biotin supply. Exogenous biotin deficiency is rare but may occur after excessive intake of raw egg white, in short bowl syndrome and during hemodialysis or parental nutrition without addition of biotin. It is now known that avidin, a protein in raw egg white that binds biotin tightly, causes the toxicity of raw eggs (5,6). Metabolic pathway The four biotin-dependent carboxylases in man are propionyl-CoA carboxylase (PCC, EC 6.4.1.3), 3-methylcrotonyl-CoA carboxylase (MCC, EC 6.4.1.4), pyruvate carboxylase (PC, EC 6.4.1.1) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC, EC 6.4.1.2). The active holocarboxylases are formed within the cells by the enzyme holocarboxylase synthetase which binds biotin covalently to a lysyl- -amino group of the apocarboxylases. The four carboxylases play a central role in vitally important metabolic pathways, i.e., the catabolism of several branched-chain amino-acids (PCC, MCC), gluconeogenesis (PC) and fatty acid synthesis (ACC) (Fig. 1)

    E. IMPACT OF IRON DEFICIENCY ON CHL-PROTEIN COMPLEXES
We demonstrated previously that Synechococcus sp. PCC 7942 cells growing under Fe-deficient conditions demonstrated profound alterations in photosynthesis. These changes were seen as a shift in the major absorption peak to 674 nm and the 77 K fluorescence peak to ~685 nm. These spectral shifts were found to be due to the presence of a newly synthesized CP complex, CP43', which we determined was encoded by the isiA gene (Burnap et al., 1993, Pakrasi et al., 1985; Riethman and Sherman, 1988). At the same time, virtually no phycobilisomes are produced. Similar changes in pigment composition have been found in Synechocystis and Anabaena and the isiA gene has been found in both organisms. The exact function of CP43' is not entirely understood, but it certainly functions as a photon dissipater which protects PSII from excess light under Fe-deficient conditions. We have also speculated that it may be involved in the reconstitution of normal membranes once Fe has been added back to the culture. However, this function remains unproven. It is important to better understand the exact role of CP43' if we are to understand the implications of growth under Fe-deficient conditions. We had previously made a deletion mutant of

Among the different factors that contribute to economic growth are the roles played by "offshore" jurisdictions i , which in many ways assist or ease different business activities (of commercial, financial or patrimonial nature) around the globe, an aspect often forgotten by many. The operational and business flexibility offered by these jurisdictions is achieved by means of the use of their various legal vehicles or instruments, which in many circumstances facilitate trade, capital flows, legitimately help reduce high/prohibitive tax burdens on business or even assist in fulfilling people's natural and legitimate desires for asset planning and protection. The spectrum of instruments may include -inter alia- the well-known International Business Corporations
