Pericarditis is an inflammation of the two layers of the thin, sac-like membrane that surrounds the heart. This membrane is called the pericardium, so the term pericarditis means inflammation of the pericardium. Description
Pericarditis is fairly common. It affects approximately one in 1,000 people. The most common form is caused by infection with a virus. People in their 20s and 30s who have had a recent upper respiratory infection are most likely to be affected, along with men aged 20-50. One out of every four people who have had pericarditis will get it again, but after two years these relapses are less likely.
The viruses that cause pericarditis include those that cause influenza polio , and rubella (German measles ). In children, the most common viruses that cause pericarditis are the adenovirus and the cocksackievirus (which is most likely to affect children during warmer weather).

    Causes, Incidence, and Risk Factors
Constrictive pericarditis is a chronic form of pericarditis in which the pericardium is rigid, thickened, scarred, and less elastic than normal. The pericardium cannot stretch as the heart beats, which prevents the chambers of the heart from filling. A direct consequence is a reduced cardiac output (the amount of blood pumped by the heart). The blood backs up behind the heart, resulting in symptoms of heart failure. The inflamed pericardium may cause pain when it rubs against the heart. The most common causes of constrictive pericarditis are conditions that induce chronic inflammation of the pericardium: tuberculosis radiation therapy to the chest, and cardiac surgery.

    • The heart and the blood vessels emerging from it are covered by a sac called the pericardium. This sac has an outer and inner layer normally separated by a small amount of lubricating fluid. Conditions that irritate the pericardium cause a localized and protective body response known as inflammation. This may result in an increase in the amount of fluid ( Pericardial Effusion ) between the outer and inner layers that may compress the heart and restrict its pumping action.

    http://www.lebanonhealth.com/condi/44621.htm
Pericarditis The sac that surrounds the heart is called the pericardium. It has two extraordinarily thin layers of membrane. Normally, a small amount of fluid lies between these two layers, providing support, lubrication and insulation for the heart and its movements. When the pericardium becomes inflamed, the amount of fluid between these two layers may increase greatly, filling with blood, cells from the immune system or pus. Inflammation of the pericardium is called pericarditis. Pericarditis can put pressure on the heart and interfere with its ability to pump an adequate amount of blood. The most serious complication of pericarditis is cardiac tamponade. In cardiac tamponade, the pumping of the heart is so restricted that blood flow is severely decreased, and the body's organs and tissues become deprived of oxygen. Severe and rapidly developing symptoms of heart failure occur. Cardiac tamponade is a medical emergency. The most common form of pericarditis is acute pericarditis, in which symptoms develop quickly. Some people develop recurrent pericarditis, in which they recover from acute pericarditis only to develop it again. Or in chronic constrictive pericarditis, scarring and thickening of the pericardium gradually interfere with the heart's pumping, so symptoms develop slowly. If you have chronic constrictive pericarditis, you may have no chest pain.

    pericarditis
Pericarditis means inflammation of the pericardial sac, a tough fibrous covering around the heart. A thin layer of fluid allows the heart to glide essentially without friction within this sac. Pericarditis is most often caused by viral infections, but may also occur with other conditions. When the sac becomes inflamed, it oozes a clear, protein rich fluid into the normally very thin space between the sac and the heart. If enough of this fluid accumulates, it can cause a constriction of the heart and lead to heart failure. If this happens, the fluid may have to be surgically drained to allow the heart to pump unrestricted. Index P Encyclopedia Main Index Sleep Tight Video Home
