What is pericarditis?

Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium, the thin sac (membrane) that surrounds the heart. There is a small amount of fluid between the inner and outer layers of the pericardium. When the pericardium becomes inflamed, the amount of fluid between its two layers increases, compressing the heart and interfering with its ability to function properly.
What are the symptoms of pericarditis?
The following are the most common indicators of pericarditis. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:
  • chest pain that:
can especially be felt behind the breastbone, sometimes felt beneath the clavicle (collarbone), neck, and left shoulder. is a sharp, piercing pain over the center or left side of the chest that increases if the person takes a deep breath. a low-grade fever pain when swallowing arrhythmias (irregular heart beats)
The symptoms of pericarditis may resemble other conditions or medical problems. Always consult your physician for a diagnosis.

PERICARDIUM AND PERICARDITIS What is the pericardium? The pericardium is the thin sac (membrane) that surrounds the heart and the roots of the great vessels. What is pericarditis? Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium. The pericardium has an inner and outer layer and contains a small amount of lubricating fluid between the layers. When the pericardium becomes inflamed, the amount of fluid between its two layers increases, compressing the heart and restricting its action. Who gets pericarditis? Pericarditis occurs most often in men ages 20 to 50. Chest pain is common, especially pain behind the breastbone that sometimes spreads to the neck and left shoulder. The pain is different from angina ; usually it's a sharp, piercing pain over the center or left side of the chest that gets worse if the person takes a deep breath. (Less often the pain is dull.) A fever is also common. Often people with pericarditis report feeling sick, and some have pain when they swallow. What causes pericarditis?

Supporting Research Pericarditis is an inflammation of the pericardium, a sac surrounding the heart. The most common form is acute pericarditis, which can usually be treated without hospitalization. Common in adolescents and young adults, acute pericarditis affects males more than females. Pericardial effusion is a form that results when fluid builds up in the pericardium. It is a more serious condition that can require hospitalization and possibly surgery. Constrictive pericarditis is a form that is a chronic condition and worsens gradually over a long period of time. It may ultimately require surgery. Pericardial effusion and constrictive pericarditis can occur together. Signs and Symptoms The signs and symptoms of pericarditis vary somewhat.

Pericarditis
Disease Injury Nutrition Poison ... Z Definition: Pericarditis is a disorder caused by inflammation (swelling and irritation with presence of extra immune cells) of the pericardium, which is the sac-like covering of the heart.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Pericarditis is usually a complication of viral infections caused by adenovirus and coxsackie virus. Less frequently, it can be caused by the polio influenza or rubella viruses. Infections with bacteria can lead to bacterial pericarditis (also called purulent pericarditis). Some fungal (mycotic) infections can also produce pericarditis. In addition, pericarditis can be associated with systemic diseases such as autoimmune disorders rheumatic fever tuberculosis cancer ... kidney failure , HIV infections, AIDS and hypothyroidism. Heart disorders which can cause pericarditis include heart attack post-MI pericarditis ) and myocarditis Radiation therapy to the chest and medications that suppress the immune system can also sometimes induce this condition. Pericarditis can also result from injury (including surgery) or trauma to the chest, esophagus or heart.

bacterial pericarditis By Eric Berlin, MD Images (click to view larger image) The pericardium is a sac-like structure that surrounds the heart. Inflammation of the heart sac, called pericarditis, can be due to infections caused by bacteria. What is going on in the body? In most cases, a person with this disease starts out having an infection, such as pneumonia , somewhere else in the body. The bacteria can then get into the bloodstream and reach the heart. Infection of the heart sac results in bacterial pericarditis, which is life threatening. What are the signs and symptoms of the disease? People with this disease are often male, between the ages of 20 and 50. A person with this disease usually appears quite ill. Symptoms may include: high fever and chills sweating at night, called night sweats a cough chest pain rapid heart beat, known as tachycardia low blood pressure ... shock What are the causes and risks of the disease? Several different bacteria can cause this disease. Examples include staphylococci, group A streptococci , and the bacteria that cause Lyme disease The risks of this disease include: cardiac tamponade , a condition in which too much fluid accumulates around the heart. This causes the heart to collapse, making it unable to pump blood.

constrictive pericarditis By Eric Berlin, MD Images (click to view larger image) The sac of fibrous tissues that surrounds the heart is called the pericardium. Constrictive pericarditis results from scarring of this lining. The scar encases the heart and may limit its ability to pump blood. What is going on in the body? The pericardium is a thin sac that covers the heart. As it heals from an infection or injury, a scar may form. The pericardium becomes rigid due to the scarring. This may restrict the filling of the heart with blood and cause other health problems. What are the signs and symptoms of the condition? This condition may cause: weakness fatigue weight loss loss of appetite ... shortness of breath , especially with activity or when lying flat on the back swelling in the legs swollen neck veins abdominal distress and tenderness, especially in the right upper part of the abdomen swelling of the abdomen due to fluid accumulation, known as ascites heart murmurs , or abnormal sounds What are the causes and risks of the condition? While the cause of this condition is often not known, the scarring may be due to:

Pericarditis
Pericarditis is inflammation of the sac that surrounds and supports the heart. This sac is called the pericardium. This inflammation can cause a build-up of fluid, blood, or pus that can cause the sack to squeeze the heart. This squeezing makes the heart's job of pumping blood difficult. Symptoms include:
  • chest pain fatigue and shortness of breath
Pericarditis can be caused by a wide range of things, including:
  • viral or bacterial infections cancer rheumatic fever systemic diseases certain medications or injury to the heart
People often confuse pericarditis with a heart attack because the symptoms are similar. If left untreated, pericarditis can be very serious and even fatal. However, current therapies are very effective in curing the disorder. Pericarditis is treated with medications to reduce the inflammation and fluid buildup and to relieve pain. Bed rest is important until the condition has been controlled. Sometimes surgery is necessary to cut a window in the sac to allow it to drain.

Encyclopedia Index P Home Encyclopedia Encyclopedia Index P Pericarditis Definition Pericarditis is an inflammation of the two layers of the thin, sac-like membrane that surrounds the heart. This membrane is called the pericardium, so the term pericarditis means inflammation of the pericardium. Description Pericarditis is fairly common. It affects approximately one in 1,000 people. The most common form is caused by infection with a virus. People in their 20s and 30s who have had a recent upper respiratory infection are most likely to be affected, along with men aged 20-50. One out of every four people who have had pericarditis will get it again, but after two years these relapses are less likely. Causes and symptoms The viruses that cause pericarditis include those that cause influenza polio , and rubella (German measles ). In children, the most common viruses that cause pericarditis are the adenovirus and the cocksackievirus (which is most likely to affect children during warmer weather). Although pericarditis is usually caused by a virus, it also can be caused by an injury to the heart or it can follow a heart attack . It may also be caused by certain inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus . Bacteria, fungi, parasites

About The Cochrane Library A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 17 June 2002. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Tuberculous pericarditis - tuberculosis infection of the pericardial membrane (pericardium) covering the heart - is becoming more common. The infection can result in fluid around the heart or fibrosis of the pericardium, which can be fatal. Objectives: In people with tuberculous pericarditis, to evaluate the effects on death, life-threatening conditions, and persistent disability of: (1) 6-month antituberculous drug regimens compared with regimens of 9 months or more; (2) corticosteroids; (3) pericardial drainage; and (4) pericardiectomy. Search strategy: We searched the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group trials register (June 2002), the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (Issue 2, 2002), MEDLINE (1966 to June 2002), EMBASE (1980 to May 2002), and checked the reference lists of existing reviews. We also contacted organizations and individuals working in the field.
