PHOBIAS
What are phobias? A phobia is an excessive or unreasonable fear of an object, place or situation. Simple phobias are fears of specific things such as insects, infections, flying. Agoraphobia is a fear of being in places where one feels "trapped" or unable to get help, such as in crowds, on a bus, or standing in a queue. A social phobia is a marked fear of social or performance situations. Phobias are extremely common. Sometimes they start in childhood for no apparent reason; sometimes they emerge after a traumatic event; and sometimes the develop from an attempt to make sense of an unexpected and intense anxiety or panic (e.g. "I feel fearful, therefore I must be afraid of something"). When the phobic person actually encounters, or even anticipates being in the presence of the feared object or situation, s/he experiences immediate anxiety. The physical symptoms of anxiety may include a racing heart, shortness of breath, sweating, chest or abdominal discomfort, trembling, etc. and the emotional component involves an intense fear - of losing control, embarrassing oneself, or passing out. Commonly people try to escape, and then to avoid the feared situation wherever possible. This may be fairly easy if the feared object is rarely encountered (e.g. fear of snakes) and avoidance will not therefore restrict the person's life very much. At other times (e.g. agoraphobia, social phobia) avoiding the feared situation limits their life severely. Escape and avoidance also make the feared object/situation more frightening.

Tell Me a Story, Paint Me the Sun by Chaplan (1991)
This is an illustrated book, appropriate for elementary school children and younger adolescents. It describes a girl whose father loses his job and becomes depressed (or starts drinking). Although he does not seek treatment or improve, she is able to talk to other adults and learn that she is worthwhile. This book is useful for the child who must learn to cope with ongoing parental denial of a mental illness or drug problem. Daddy Doesn't Have to be a Giant Anymore by J R Thomas (1996) Clarion Books
This illustrated book is told from the elementary school aged daughter's point of view. It describes her reactions to her alcoholic father's mood swings and erratic behavior. She is present when family and friends arrange a supportive confrontation to break down the father's denial and get him into residential treatment. When he returns from the treatment, he is on the road to sobriety and is able to talk to his daughter about his past behavior.

What is a phobia Special fear of flying section Common phobias How to deal with phobias ... Our Phobia Poll Fears and phobias limit our ability to get the most from life. In some cases they can prevent us living even a relatively normal life. In all cases we can overcome them - not necessarily with 'treatment' but through learning how to manage our own thoughts and feelings.
What is fear?
We feel fearful when we believe we do not have the ability to cope with something. This fear may be grounded in reality, as when we fear being knocked down by a car when trying to cross a busy road. Or the fear may be irrational as when we fear a tiny harmless spider. Many of our fears are a mix of reality and misinterpretation of our ability to cope. When there is a large degree of of misinterpretation it is likely that it is a phobia rather than a fear.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Service Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration The Varieties of Fear Phobias take many forms. Some people are terrified of dogs, even tiny dogs with wagging tails. Some people stiffen with fright at the mere thought of talking in front of a group. Some can't fly. Some tremble and hide at the crack of thunder. Some can't ride an escalator. Some are struck by panic attacks for no apparent reason. And some never leave their homes. Fears such as these are very common. Millions of Americans are afflicted with phobias or panic disorder. They suffer intensely. To escape their fear, they go to great lengths to avoid the object, place, or situation that provokes it. They change jobs merely to avoid an elevator ride, for example, or cut back their social life. Some wear down their families with their clinging dependency. Nearly all lose out on much of life. Many people to from doctor to doctor seeking cures for the physical symptoms that accompany their phobias. Often, even the doctor fails to recognize that stomach pains, high blood pressure, rapid heart beat, and other symptoms may be related to intense fear. Unless questioned, patients may not think to mention their fears. Doctors may not ask. While the bills keep mounting, the medical condition fails to improve.

A phobia is an anxiety disorder in which the affected person experiences an excessive or irrational fear of a specific situation, object or activity that disrupts their ability to function in normal daily activities. Fear occurs when the situation, object, or activity is anticipated or encountered and sometimes triggers a panic attack. Adults with phobias usually realize that their fear is irrational or excessive; however, having this insight is not typical in children with phobias. The phobia produces symptoms of anxiety that can range from mild to severe. People with mild symptoms usually do not seek treatment because their phobia does not interfere with their ability to function in normal daily activities. Those who experience severe symptoms may become unable to function in their daily routine, such as being afraid to leave their home. There are three types of phobia:
  • Agoraphobia (fear of public places, in which a person feels trapped or fears having a panic attack in public)
