Facts Music History Sports ... Goodies Phobias What do you fear? What do people fear most? At the top of the list is death, the fear of which is necrophobia. Second, apparently, is the fear of failure, which is called kakorrhaphiophobia. There is of course a story of how fears developed, like fear for the number 13 ( below ). The fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia. In pagan times Friday was the luckiest day of the week because it was ruled by the planet Venus, the symbol of love and fortune. In fact, Friday is named in honour of Freya, goddess of Love. But for Christians, Friday has not been a good day. Adam and Eve is said to have eaten the forbidden fruit on a Friday and died on a Friday. Jesus was crucified on a Friday. For centuries sailors refused to set sail on a Friday. It is told that when the reluctance of seamen to set sail on a Friday had reached such proportions that it interfered with naval operations, the British Admiralty decided to prove once and for all that it is a fallacy. They laid the keel of a new vessel on a Friday, named her H.M.S. Friday, and launched her on a Friday. On her first voyage, setting sail on a Friday, she was commanded by Captain James Friday. She left the harbour and nothing has since been heard of her or her crew. The identical story has also found its place in American lore.

PHOBIAS
by National Institute of Mental Health
Panic Disorder Phobias occur in several forms. A specific phobia is a fear of a particular object or situation. Social phobia is a fear of being painfully embarrassed in a social setting. And agoraphobia, which often accompanies panic disorder, is a fear of being in any situation that might provoke a panic attack, or from which escape might be difficult if one occurred.
Specific Phobias
"I'm scared to death of flying, and I never do it anymore. It's an awful feeling when that airplane door closes and I feel trapped. My heart pounds and I sweat bullets. If somebody starts talking to me, I get very stiff and preoccupied. When the airplane starts to ascend, it just reinforces that feeling that I can't get out. I picture myself losing control, freaking out, climbing the walls, but of course I never do. I'm not afraid of crashing or hitting turbulence. It's just that feeling of being trapped. Whenever I've thought about changing jobs, I've had to think, "Would I be under pressure to fly?" These days I only go places where I can drive or take a train. My friends always point out that I couldn't get off a train traveling at high speeds either, so why don't trains bother me? I just tell them it isn't a rational fear."
Phobias aren't just extreme fear;

Phobias:
When Fear is a Disease
Cyro Masci, MD Introduction F
ear is a very ancient and universal emotion in man. It can be defined as the sensation that you are in danger, that something bad is about to happen. Fear is almost always accompanied by a host of physical symptoms which are quite disturbing. When it is not justified by the presence of real danger or threat, or by any rational cause, and when it is also accompanied by a systematic avoidance of the situations which lead to it, then we have what is called a phobia Phobia is actually a kind of panic reaction caused by specific stimuli or situations. There are three basic types of phobia:
  • Agarophobia, literally, it is the irrational fear of the agora (in ancient Greece, this was the place where the market was located), in other words, the generalized fear of places or situations where there is a potential difficulty or embarassment to escape from it, or where help might not be available in case of need. This includes going out of our own's home, travelling without company, or being in the middle of a crowd, standing in queues to leave a place, etc. Social phobia , when the person has a marked and persistent fear of some specific or generalized social situations, such as the shame of misbehaving in front of other people, the fear of participating in group reunions, of starting or maintaining a conversation with strangers, of initiating a romantic encounter, of talking to persons of authority, etc.

      "I am impressed about the quickness of results. It really is just about trust, and doing away with fear and worries. I look forward to DELETING more 'junk'." - Claudia R. A "phobia" is a strong, persistent and irrational fear elicited by a specific stimulus or situation. About one out of ten people suffer a severe fear of specific objects, activities or settings. The list of phobias is virtually endless. It includes abnormal fear of death or dying, dentists, bridges, heights, closed spaces, open spaces, crowds, animals, public speaking, among many others. Other common phobias are fear of commitment, fear of intimacy, fear of success, as well as fear of failure, and fear of change. About 25 million Americans have a fear of flying . Some victims simply grit their teeth and cope as best they can. Others are so phobic they can't force themselves to get on an airplane. Many people experience a fear of public speaking, from feelings of anxiety and panic just prior to the event, to full anxiety throughout the speaking experience. These people will want to call Dr Luann, who used to have the fear of speaking and is now a past president of the National Speakers Association of Northern California.

Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, and Hypnotherapists
What is Hypnosis? The brain operates in four general states determined by the frequency of the electricity generated by the exchange of chemicals in the neural pathways. The four states include Full Conscious Awareness, the Hypnotic State, the Dream State, and the Sleep State. These four states correspond to electrical activity in the brain and are defined by frequency ranges on an EEG. Full Conscious Awareness occurs when the majority of the electrical activity in the brain is in the beta range (14-35 Hz). The Hypnotic State occurs when brain activity is in the alpha range (8-13 Hz). The Dream State occurs when brain activity is in the theta range (4-7 Hz), and the Sleep State occurs when brain activity is in the delta range (.5-3 Hz). Full Conscious Awareness is where which we spend most of our waking hours. In this state, our mind is attentive and uses logic to reason, evaluate, assess, judge, and make decisions. Unfortunately, when making life changes, the conscious mind often gets in the way. In the Hypnotic State, the doorway between the conscious and the subconscious is opened, memories become easily accessible, and new information is stored. In the Hypnotic State, you are not really "thinking" in the traditional sense. You are "experiencing" without questioning, without critical judgment or analysis, like when you watch a movie, and the hypnotherapist can make suggestions that are very likely to "stick" - precisely because your conscious mind is not getting in the way. You are not "judging" or being "critical" of the suggestions.

Phobias
Phobias are the most common form of mental disorders. They can be defined as irrational fears about objects or situations. People tend to see these phobias as unreasonable, but feel incapable of giving up the fear, or confronting the situation in a calm fashion. Reasoning with the person as to the foolishness of the fear has no effect. Phobias can be categorized into three types:
  • Simple, or situational, phobias. These are fears of animals and insects, fears of injuries or injections, or fears of specific situations such as heights, tunnels, flying, or thunderstorms.
  • Social phobias. These are fears of being judged by people, or being seen as foolish. It results in the individual avoiding many social situations which the person believes he or she should otherwise attend.
  • Agoraphobia. This is a somewhat more complicated phobia where the person believes that one will have a panic attack in certain situations that are difficult to escape from, such as open spaces, or tunnels. The individual is more focussed on the danger of having a panic attack, rather than believing the situation is dangerous per se.
