Causes and risks Pinworm infection is due to the small worm called Enterobius vermicularis. It is the most common worm infection in the United States and it most commonly affects school-age children. Its only reservoir are humans, and it is transmitted from person-to-person by ingesting eggs (oral-fecal route), or by contact with contaminated bedding, food, or other items. Upon ingestion of eggs, larvae eventually hatch in the small intestine and worms then mature in the colon. Female worms then migrate to the anal area, especially at night, and deposit their eggs which may lead to itching and sometimes infection of the involved area. Prevention Good personal hygiene with emphasis on washing hands after using the bathroom and before preparing food is essential. Minimizing overcrowding, frequent washing of bedding and underclothing in particular of affected individual is also important.

    PINWORMS
PINWORMS - Enterobiasis Pinworms are a mild intestinal disease caused by an intestinal round worm. The most common symptoms are anal itching or irritation, sleep disturbance and irritability. Diagnosis is made by observation of the anal area approximately one to two hours after the child has fallen asleep. The worm can then be detected in the anal area laying eggs. If the worm cannot be seen but is suspected, a piece of transparent adhesive tape (scotch tape) is applied to the perianal area in the morning just before getting up. This tape can be taken to the doctor's office and examined under the microscope for the eggs. Most doctor's will call in a prescription for medication without examining the child. Visual confirmation of the worm by a parent is sufficient for the diagnosis. 5-15% of the general population in the United States are estimated to be infected by Pinworms. Prevalence rates are highest in preschool and school age children. Infection is usually familial and reinfection is common. Pinworms are spread through transfer of eggs by hand from anus to mouth of the infected person and others. Indirectly the eggs can be transferred through clothing, bedding, food or other articles contaminated with eggs of the parasite. The incubation period is three to six weeks after ingestion of an egg.

How can I tell if my child has pinworms?
The nighttime itching is the big tip-off, says Doug Kress, assistant professor and director of clinical services for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center department of dermatology. You can confirm your suspicions by checking your child for worms at night with a flashlight. You can also check for the presence of worms by gently pressing a piece of transparent tape to your child's anus. Eggs will stick to the tape, and you can take it to your pediatrician to confirm the diagnosis. Your doctor may also have a special kit designed to collect pinworm eggs. (You can often find the eggs even if you can't detect the actual worms.) If you don't find pinworms or eggs, anal itching may signal other problems, including dryness from cleaning the area too vigorously with soap. Red, tender skin around your child's anus could also be the result of irritation from diaper rash, diarrhea , or a bacterial infection; if you suspect an infection, call your pediatrician.

Pinworm infections are common in children. The child will usually experience itching or irritation of the anal area. This often occurs during the night or early morning when the pinworms are moving from within the rectum to outside the anal area. Pinworms are NOT serious. A pinworm infection is easily treated with an anti-worm medication and hygiene measures. If your child has symptoms of a pinworm infection you may be able to confirm this suspicion. Using a flashlight, examine your child's anal area a few hours after she has gone to bed. You may find the pinworms, usually moving. If you do not see the worms but are still suspicious, a “Scotch Tape Test” can be performed (see below). Call Chestnut Hill Pediatric Group during Routine Office Hours If:

    Pinworms
Pinworms are tiny parasitic worms that live in the large intestine. The female worms lay their eggs around the anus at night. Symptoms include anal itching, sleeplessness, irritability, and anal irritation due to scratching. Pinworms may also be present without symptoms. Pinworms are common in school-aged children. Pinworms are spread when an uninfected person touches the anal area of an infected person (e.g., during diaper changing) or sheets or other articles contaminated with pinworm eggs, then touches the mouth, transferring the eggs, and swallows the eggs. An infected person can spread pinworms by scratching the anal area, then contaminating food or other objects which are then eaten or touched by uninfected persons. Pinworms can be spread as long as either worms or eggs are present. Eggs can survive up to 2 weeks away from a human host.

    FACTS ABOUT
    Pinworms
Pinworms are tiny, white thread-like worms that live in the intestines. The worms crawl out of the anus at night and lay their eggs on nearby skin. Usually, children with Pinworms have no symptoms. However, some children can get very itchy around the anus and vagina. Pinworms are a nuisance, not a disease. They are very common in children and can spread easily among young children. Pinworms are spread when:
    • an infected person scratches the itchy area and gets pinworm eggs on the fingers or under the fingernails and then touches another person; an uninfected person picks up pinworm eggs from and infected person's clothes, pajamas, sheets or surroundings. These eggs can survive for several weeks outside the body.
A physician can do a simple test to check for Pinworms. If found, the Pinworms can be treated with medication. However, the Pinworms can recur if the child again comes into contact with pinworm eggs. Things Parents Can Do
    • Watch your child for signs of pinworm infection, especially scratching the anus if another child has Pinworms. Make sure that all household members wash their hands carefully after going to the toilet or changing diapers and before preparing or eating food.

    PINWORMS!!!
Dear Alice, My wife developed pinworms from her special-ed students (we think). Our HMO could not diagnose it (or lost the test results). We felt sure that the symptomology was that of pinworms and proceeded to take 100 mg of Vermox (mebendazole). It seemed to work since the itching started to subside and a cluster of "dental-floss looking" worms was "delivered" in the john. Since the delivery she has taken the Vermox again to destroy the eggs and plans to do it again in 3 weeks. The question is: "How hard is it to get rid of these worms once you've had them for over a year? Should she repeat the dosage every 2-3 weeks if itching returns?" Thank you in advance for any help you might give us (the HMO certainly didn't want to do anything).
By some estimates, close to one-fifth of all children in the United States have pinworms at any given time. In fact, pinworms are probably the most common of all worm infestations in humans infective pinworm eggs can live indoors for up to two weeks, presumably in hope of being taken in by a human host. Young children tend to be most effective at ingesting and spreading pinworm eggs. Most likely, then, you're correct in guessing that your wife picked up these little buggers in her classroom. The length of time that you've had pinworms should not affect the treatment or make it more difficult to get rid of them. It's not as if the pinworms will erect an entire city in a year's time, versus a squatter settlement if given only a few weeks. The mebendazole is one of the most effective drugs out there for getting rid of pinworms, as well as other helminth relatives of the pinworm. To treat pinworms, you only need to take one 100 mg tablet at first. Two weeks later, you take one more tablet. After that, it's best to wait about three weeks before deciding whether or not to take a third dose. If symptoms do not reappear, you probably got rid of them and don't require any further treatment.

    Pinworms
Pin worms are small (1/4 -1/2 inch long), white worms that look like small pieces of thread that cause itching around the anus (without a rash), especially at night. Pinworms infect only humans, living in their intestines and are easily transmitted to other people. The adult female pinworm travels to the skin around the anus at night and lays her eggs. When your child itches the area, he will get the eggs under his nails. The eggs are then transmitted to another person, who gets the eggs on their hands and then places their hands in their mouth, swallowing the eggs. The eggs hatch in the intestines and mature into adults, who mate, producing females who can then lay eggs and continue to spread the illness. If you think that your child has pinworms, you take look at his bottom in the middle of the night and look for the adult worms. If you don't see the worms, your doctor might recommend doing a scotch tape test or using a pinworm prep test to look for the eggs. Scotch tape placed with the sticky part against your child's anus will pick up any eggs that can then be seen under a microscope.

Pinworms are small, white, threadlike worms that can live in the large intestine. Pinworm infestation is very common, especially in children. Pinworms spread very easily. Female pinworms exit the anus during the night to lay their eggs. This causes itching, and people with pinworms may unknowingly transfer the eggs to their fingers, clothes, or bedding. Other people then pick up these eggs through food or by touch. The eggs enter the mouth and mature in the large intestine. The pinworm's life cycle is four to six weeks. The main symptom of a pinworm infestation is intense nighttime itching near the anus. Pinworms rarely cause any damage, but the itching is uncomfortable and can cause trouble sleeping, leading to tiredness and irritability. Over-the-counter drugs are usually very successful in eliminating pinworms. Therapy involves a one-time dose that you repeat three weeks later if the infestation hasn't cleared. Doctors can prescribe medicines if over-the-counter products don't work.
