WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Pinworm is also known as seatworm or threadworm. Medically, it is called enterobiasis (en-ter-o-BI-uh-sis) or oxyuriasis (ox-e-yur-EYE-uh-sis). It is an infection of the end of the bowel and anal area with tiny, white, thread-like worms that you can barely see. Because the worms live by getting their food from the person they have infected, they are called parasites. Infection with the worms is more common in warm climates.
Causes
Pinworm eggs can move from toilet seats to the body. They also spread through hand-to-hand or hand-to-mouth contact, and they can float in the air and be breathed in or swallowed. Once inside the body, the eggs travel to the small intestine and hatch.
Signs/Symptoms
The chief symptom is irritated skin and painful itching around the anus. The itching is worse at night and may keep you awake. If pinworms move to the opening of the vagina, they may cause itching, soreness, or a discharge. Other symptoms include loss of appetite and stomach pain, though this is rare. The skin may become pale and colorless.

Pinworms Pinworms, Enterobius vermicularis , are tiny, parasitic worms. They are easily transmitted from human to human and are often found in every person living in the same house. Pinworms eggs, which are so light they can float in the air, are ingested. The worms develop in the intestinal tract and the adult emerges from the rectum. The emerging worm can cause localized itching and irritation. Children especially can reinfect themselves easily by not washing their hands properly. Pinworms are easily controlled by oral medication and by proper hygiene in the bathroom, bedroom and laundry. Contrary to popular opinion, pinworms are not found on or transmitted by domestic pets. Instead, pinworms are found only on humans and higher primates like chimpanzees.

The worms crawl out of the anus at night and lay their eggs on nearby skin. Usually, children with pinworms have no symptoms. However, some children can get very itchy around the anus and vagina. Pinworms are a nuisance, not a disease. They are very common in children and spread easily among children and staff in child care facilities. How are pinworms transmitted?

Pinworms are small curved worms that live as parasites on horses, rabbits, and other mammals. One type infests the human intestines and rectum. These pinworms are also called "seatworms" or "threadworms." They most often occur in children between the ages of five and fourteen. Pinworms are not dangerous but can be irritating and lead to skin infections due to scratching. The female pinworm lives in the intestine and crawls to the opening of the rectum at night to lay her eggs. The sticky coating that attaches the eggs to the skin is irritating and causes itching. The young pinworms are transferred to the hands when the child scratches around the rectum. Pinworm eggs are very small and can be breathed in from the air or can be swallowed when a child puts dirty hands in their mouth. Pinworms may also be spread from objects such as toys or clothing.

Do you give just one Vermox tablet or do you routinely treat with a second dose after two weeks?Do you prescribe for all family members - including family member, once. I'll put a refill on it but a single pill seems very effective. Do you insist on examining the child or will you prescribe over the phone she knows what she is talking about. I have never had a problem with vermox as far as side effects. Recently I treated one of my patients over the phone (a note had come home from school that pinworms were going around the class, he'd had several days of rectal itching, etc.). He wasn't much better after two weeks so I finally examined him. His tush was really red, I cultured it, and sure enough he had peri-rectal strep. Bactroban cleared it up quickly. Today (Sunday) I received a call from a family who goes to one of the peds I cover with on weekends. The mom said her six-year old had had several

Pinworms are tiny parasitic worms that live in the large intestine. The female worms lay their eggs around the anus at night. Symptoms include anal itching, sleeplessness, irritability, and anal irritation due to scratching. Pinworms may also be present without symptoms. Pinworms are common in school-aged children. Pinworms are spread when an uninfected person touches the anal area of an infected person (e.g., during diaper changing) or sheets or other articles contaminated with pinworm eggs, then touches the mouth, transferring the eggs, and swallows the eggs. An infected person can spread pinworms by scratching the anal area, then contaminating food or other objects which are then eaten or touched by uninfected persons. Pinworms can be spread as long as either worms or eggs are present. Eggs can survive up to 2 weeks away from a human host. To prevent the spread of pinworms: If you suspect a child has pinworms, call the parents and ask them to have the child diagnosed. Exclude a child with pinworms from the child care facility until 24 hours after the the child has seen a physician and received the first treatment. The entire family may have to be treated to prevent reinfection. Observe proper handwashing among children and adults, particularly before eating and after using the toilet. Clean and disinfect bathroom surfaces. Vacuum carpeted areas. Machine wash bed linens and hand towels using

    Pinworms
By Henriette Pinworms are admirably adapted to the human host, and don't do any damage, except that you scratch your ass all the time. If friends visit your place, and you have had pinworms for a while (which implies microscopic pinworm eggs everywhere, including your breathing air), your friends start scratching -their- asses about two weeks after their visit. Two weeks is the time it takes the eggs to grow into mature pinworms, mate, and lay eggs outside your rectum, making it itch.
Hmmmm, your friends go, trying to figure out where they might have caught it, remembering the way your cat, dog, and toddler dragged their asses along the floor. And your social life suffers. Lots. The females make short excursions around the anus to lay their eggs (which is why the itch). Older pinworms die and are eliminated with your feces. The eggs sort of fall off. However, you get new pinworm eggs in your breathing air with every breath you take, if you live in a pinworm household. First you burn the pinworm house. (I once asked those in the know about vacuum cleaners. They looked at me with pity in their eyes, and sniggered.)

How did my child become infected? How are pinworms treated? ... How can I prevent pinworms? What are pinworms? Pinworms are small, white, threadlike worms that infect up to 10 percent of children and teens. If your child's infected, he'll probably scratch and complain of itching around the anus, especially at night. You may be able to see the worms, which are about a quarter of an inch long and look like pieces of dental floss, wiggling around your child's anus and in his stool. A common childhood malady, pinworms don't indicate poor hygiene. They pose no health risks, and unlike lice they're easily eradicated. How can I tell if my child has pinworms? Nighttime itching is the big tip-off. You can confirm your suspicion by checking your child for worms at night with a flashlight. You can also check for the presence of worms by pressing a piece of transparent tape to your child's anus. Eggs will stick to the tape, and you can take it to your pediatrician to use in making the diagnosis. The doctor may also have a special kit to collect pinworm eggs (the eggs can often be seen even if you can't detect the actual worms). If you don't find pinworms or eggs, anal itching may signal other problems, including dryness from cleaning the area with a lot of soap. A child who has tender red skin around his anus could also have a bacterial infection; if you suspect an infection, call your pediatrician.

Pinworms are tiny worms that live and grow inside the intestine and lay eggs in the area around the anus. Pinworms are very contagious, and the eggs spread from person to person through hand contact, clothing, and other items such as bed sheets, furniture, food, and even dust in the air that is contaminated. Anyone can get pinworms, but they are most common among young children who have poor hygiene and are exposed to other children who are infected. Infection rate can be as high as 90 percent in schools and day care facilities. Although pinworms are very easy to treat, reinfection can be a problem - especially among children and the families of those who are infected - because of being in close contact with others or sharing personal items that might be contaminated. Pinworms are common in many countries, especially in crowded urban areas, and they are one of the most common contagious parasites affecting humans in Canada.

Occasionally they are seen with the bowel movement. They come out at night to lay eggs in the rectal area. They are extremely common in childhood and are usually contacted from other children. They become infected when they ingest the pinworm eggs. The swallowed egg matures to the adult pinworm after 3 to 4 weeks.
