What are pinworms?
How can I tell if my child has pinworms? How did my child become infected? How are pinworms treated? ... How can I prevent pinworms? What are pinworms? Pinworms are small, white, threadlike worms that infect up to 10 percent of children and teens. If your child's infected, he'll probably scratch and complain of itching around the anus, especially at night. You may be able to see the worms, which are about a quarter of an inch long and look like pieces of dental floss, wiggling around your child's anus and in his stool. A common childhood malady, pinworms don't indicate poor hygiene. They pose no health risks, and unlike lice they're easily eradicated. How can I tell if my child has pinworms? Nighttime itching is the big tip-off. You can confirm your suspicion by checking your child for worms at night with a flashlight. You can also check for the presence of worms by pressing a piece of transparent tape to your child's anus. Eggs will stick to the tape, and you can take it to your pediatrician to use in making the diagnosis. The doctor may also have a special kit to collect pinworm eggs (the eggs can often be seen even if you can't detect the actual worms). If you don't find pinworms or eggs, anal itching may signal other problems, including dryness from cleaning the area with a lot of soap. A child who has tender red skin around his anus could also have a bacterial infection; if you suspect an infection, call your pediatrician.

Pinworms are very small, very thin worms, that can infect the large intestine. They live at the upper end and travel at night to the outside of the anus to lay their eggs. Your child scratching the anal area will be about the only sign that they have pinworms. It the infection becomes severe, the child may develop symptoms of abdominal pain and loss of appetite. Pinworms can live on clothing and bedding for days making it possible for other members of the family to become infected. If you suspect pinworms, go to your childís bedroom at night and shine a flashlight on the childís anus. You should be able to see the pinworms.
Call your doctor to obtain a medication for pinworms.

Pinworm Patrol
by Gayle Brandeis Shining a flashlight into my sleeping child's butt crack is not my favorite way to pass the time. Especially when a worm pokes out and undulates, like a tiny tongue giving me the raspberry. Pinworm patrol is a dirty stinking job, but there are times when a mama has to bend to the occasion.
I remember my first pinworm expedition. When my son was two, an article about parasites appeared in Mothering magazine. Symptoms of pinworm infestation, the piece mentioned, include irritability, restlessness, and a general out-of-sorts attitude. After reading this, every mother I knew was convinced her child had pinworms.
We hunted for the clammy creatures in the dead of nightthe best time to find them, the article said, since they come out to deposit their eggs nocturnally. My friends and I weren't sure why any creature would want to birth their offspring in an anal fold, but, hey, all birth is messy. We didn't have time to judge the evolution of parasite life; we were on a simple mission to search and destroy.

Pinworms in Pregnancy
Q: I would like to hear from other midwives who have dealt with pinworms in
pregnancy. Did the women experience periodic spotting? Also what, if any,
natural remedies are effective and safe in pregnancy?
-Deren Bader
Pinworms and spotting in pregnancy are not related. However, it would be
important to rule out irritated hemorrhoids or other causes of bleeding
from scratching efforts. Pinworms are fairly common and have a life cycle
of about 2-6 weeks. They are transmitted by hand to mouth contact and
emerge from the anus to lay their eggs. The resulting irritation causes the
host to scratch; the cycle is repeated when unwashed hands touch food or the mouth. The ova can live up to three weeks. Before medications for pinworms were developed, gentian violet was taken internally for 10 days to kill the worms. It cannot be used internally in pregnancy, but it does raise the possibility of external use at the anus to kill emerging worms. Some Naturopaths prescribe spigelia for pinworms. It is safe to use in pregnancy. Others suggest ingestion of pumpkins seeds and

Threadworms Pinworms, Enterobius vermicularis) www.StudentHealth.co.uk It is estimated that threadworms infect more than 400,000,000 people throughout the world (10% of humans), and in many areas of the world (e.g., North America and Europe) it is the most common nematode parasite of humans. Adult threadworms live in the large intestines; males and females are about 5 mm and 10 mm long, respectively. After copulation the males die. When the female is ready to lay eggs she crawls out of the anus and deposits the eggs on the surrounding perianal skin; a single female can produce more than 10,000 eggs. After laying her eggs, the female also dies. At body temperature the eggs develop quickly and are infective in a few hours. When ingested by another person the eggs hatch in the small intestine, and the juvenile worms grow into adult, sexually mature worms in about a month. The commonest symptom associated with threadworm infections is an itchy bottom (Pruritus ani). Scratching of the perianal skin to relieve the itching can lead to bacterial infections. This cycle can result in a situation where the infected person becomes very uncomfortable. In women, the adult threadworms can enter the vagina and cause additional irritation. Threadworms are highly contagious. The eggs are infective within a few hours of being laid, and they are deposited directly on the perianal skin. Bed linen, clothing, carpets, etc., can be contaminated with eggs. The infected person's hands will, invariably, be contaminated with eggs, providing a route for reinfection and egg dispersal. It is for this reason that if one member of a family is infected for threadworms, the whole family is treated.

According to the Center for Disease Control, Pinworm is the most common worm infection in the U.S. School-age children; followed by pre-schoolers, have the highest rates of infection. A pinworm infection is caused by a small, white intestinal worm called Enterobius vermicularis. Pinworms are about the length of a staple and live in the rectum of humans. While an infected person sleeps, female pinworms leave the intestines through the anus and deposit egos on the surrounding skin. Itching around the anus, disturbed sleep, and irritability are common symptoms. Eggs are infective within a few hours after being deposited on the skin. They can survive up to two weeks on clothing, bedding, or other objects. Children can become infected by accidentally swallowing infective pinworm eggs from contaminated surfaces or fingers. If you suspect pinworms, consult your physician who will instruct you regarding sample gathering for microscopic examination. Both over-the-counter and prescription treatments are effective. Treatment involves a two-dose course. The second dose is normally given two weeks after the first.

Darkfield Image Gallery Pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis As the most common nematode parasite of humans in North America and Europe, pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis ) infect more than 400 million people worldwide. Living in the large intestine, pinworm infestations may be asymptomatic or result in mild irritations of the gastrointestinal tract. Mature female pinworms are about twice as long as the 5-millimeter-long males, which live only until copulation occurs. When she is ready to lay her 10,000 plus eggs, the female nematode crawls out of the host's anus, deposits the eggs on the perianal skin, and then dies. At the average human body temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, the eggs develop rapidly and reach their third juvenile stage as infective eggs in approximately 6 hours. The eggs are ingested by another human host and hatch in the small intestine. In about a month, the parasitic nematodes reach maturity and reproduce sexually, reinitiating the life cycle. A common symptom of a pinworm infestation is perianal itching associated with the nocturnal egg-laying habits of E. vermicularis

Child and Teen Health Pinworms Audio File Pinworms are tiny parasitic worms that live in the intestines of humans. Pinworm infestation is very common, especially among children, and does not necessarily indicate poor hygiene. Pinworms are highly contagious. Although pinworms can cause itching and irritation of the anal area, they cause no lasting harm. Pinworm eggs are spread from person to person on contaminated food, clothing or objects such as toys, fingers and toilet seats. The eggs can also be inhaled. Once the eggs enter the body through the mouth or nose, they migrate to the large intestine where they hatch. The worms move to the rectum, and the females crawl out of the anus at night to lay their eggs. Deposit of the eggs around the anus can cause intense itching, which is the main symptom of pinworms. The entire cycle takes three to four weeks. The eggs can survive for up to two weeks in bed linens or house dust or on furniture or pets' fur. An infestation can spread quickly through a household, classroom or day care facility. Some people have no symptoms, but severe itching of the area around the anus at night is common. Adult worms look like grayish-white threads about ¼ to ½ inch long. They can sometimes be seen around the anus, especially at night, or on the surface of a bowel movement.
