Pinworms
Information Sheet for Parents
Pinworms are very small (less than ½ inch long), white, thread-like worms that commonly infect the intestines. They are easily spread from person to person by contact with bowel movements that contain the eggs. The eggs can be carried on the hands, clothing, bedding, food etc. (Pinworms connot be passed from animals to humans). Pinworms are particularly common among children in schools and day care centers. Infection is usually characterized by intense rectal itching, which is often worse at night, when the female worms crawl out of the rectum to lay their eggs. These worms may also infect the vagina, causing itching and irritation. Often the worms can be seen by inspecting the child’s rectal area during sleeping.
Prevention and Treatment
If you suspect your child has pinworms, call your physician. When a child has pinworms, doctors may recommend all family members receive treatment at the same time. To prevent reinfection, wash bedding, towels and clothing in hot water. Also instruct your child to always wash their hands after using the toilet and before eating.

[Last Modified: Cellulose tape or swube tube procedure for demonstration of pinworm eggs The most reliable and widely used technique for demonstrating pinworm eggs ( Enterobius vermicularis ) is the cellulose tape or swube tube procedure. The adhesive part of the swube tube or tape is applied to the perianal area first thing in the morning. Specimens should be collected on three consecutive mornings prior to bathing. If an infection is present, eggs and sometimes adult worms of Enterobius vermicularis will be present on the tape and can be seen under the microscope. For additional information about procedures for demonstrating pinworms, call the Division of Parasitic Diseases, at (770) 488-4474.

Common Infectious Illnesses

Pinworms What is the incubation period?
(How long after contact can illness develop?)
The illness can develop within two to six weeks after contact.
How is the infection spread?
Pinworms cause rectal itching. Microscopic eggs found on hands of infected individuals may contaminate surfaces. Infection spreads through ingestion of eggs.
When is the child most contagious?
Eggs may survive up to two weeks after appropriate therapy and after rectal itching has stopped. Re-infection is common.
When can the child return to daycare/school?
There are no day care or school restrictions, however treatment should be given to reduce spread of infection.
How can spreading the infection be prevented?
You can prevent the spread of infection through frequent, good handwashing, particularly by infected child and any caregivers assisting with toileting; proper disposal/cleaning of diapers, bedding, clothes, etc.; and proper disinfection of changing tables and toileting areas.
Should the infection be reported to the county health department?

Nutritional Treatment for Pinworms Garlic capsules: 3 - 3 times a day with food; MSM (Methysulfonylmethane): 1/2 teaspoon three times a day: dissolve crystals in distilled or purified water. Take with Garlic capsules; Black Walnut drops: 15 drops 2 times per day; and Vermicyde drops: 10 drops 2 times per day: Put both drops in distilled or purified water; take on arising and before bed (and separate from other drops); Pau d'Arco Tea: 1 cup two to three times per day (AFTER meals). See brewing directions on back of box. Treatment takes three months or more to clear microbial infection. Close adherence to dietary procedures during the course of treatment as outlined in the Food Sensitivity forms of the Candida albicans Program is most important. Nutritional treatment for parasites is part of Dr. MacFarland's Candida program. Usually all members of the family should be treated as described at the same time. Dosages indicated are for adults. Does everyone have pinworms?
19-Dec-2000 Dear Straight Dope: I've been itching to ask these questions for some time, but it's not exactly a subject you bring up with your roommate or business colleague. Is it true that everyone has some pinworms in their colon and the worms are only noticed when they overpopulate? Also, is it true that garlic can rid the bowels of pinworms? Irae Noir SDSTAFF Lynn replies: Enterobius vermicularis . Alternative names: seatworm; enterobiasis Enterobius vermicularis; oxyuriasis; threadworm; pinworm infection Mom was right. You should always wash your hands thoroughly with soap after using the bathroom and before handling food or eating. We don't all have pinworm, but an awful lot of us do. Pinworm is the most common human worm infection in the United States. According to various reports, rates of infection vary from 10% to almost 50% in children under 12, depending on the group. School-age children have the highest incidence of infection, followed by preschoolers. Like lice, pinworm is readily spread through schools and child care centers. Adults are much less likely to have pinworm, unless the adult is a caretaker of infected children. Sometimes pinworm is spread to other family members as well. Pinworm eggs are collected on the fingers, generally when the patient scratches his itchy bottom. From there, the eggs can be spread to other surfaces, where they can live for several days, just waiting to be picked up and swallowed by their next host. If the patient puts his fingers in his mouth, the eggs can be swallowed and reinfect him. These pinworms, incidentally, infect only humans and a few kinds of apes. They do not infect common household pets.

Pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis
As the most common nematode parasite of humans in North America and Europe, pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis ) infect more than 400 million people worldwide. Living in the large intestine, pinworm infestations may be asymptomatic or result in mild irritations of the gastrointestinal tract. Mature female pinworms are about twice as long as the 5-millimeter-long males, which live only until copulation occurs. When she is ready to lay her 10,000 plus eggs, the female nematode crawls out of the host's anus, deposits the eggs on the perianal skin, and then dies. At the average human body temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, the eggs develop rapidly and reach their third juvenile stage as infective eggs in approximately 6 hours. The eggs are ingested by another human host and hatch in the small intestine. In about a month, the parasitic nematodes reach maturity and reproduce sexually, reinitiating the life cycle. A common symptom of a pinworm infestation is perianal itching associated with the nocturnal egg-laying habits of E. vermicularis

    What Are Pinworms?
Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) is the most common intestinal parasite in the U.S. Pinworms
occur most often in school-age children, but are highly contagious, and can easily spread to the
entire family. According to the Center for Disease Control, pinworms are twice as common as
head lice, and some sources estimate as much as 20% of the U.S. population is affected
annually. How To Eliminate Pinworms T he best way to treat pinworms is to use an over-the-counter medication, such as Pin-X Formerly available by prescription only, Pin-X is now available over-the-counter. Pin-X is a pleasant, caramel flavored liquid medication that usually requires only a single dose to eliminate pinworms. Because pinworms are so highly contagious, all family members should be treated.
