Approximately 85 percent of the population will develop an allergic reaction if exposed to poison ivy, oak or sumac, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Nearly one-third of forestry workers and firefighters who battle forest fires in California, Oregon and Washington develop rashes or lung irritations from contact with poison oak, which is the most common of the three in those states. Facts about Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, and Poison Sumac
Poison ivy is a term loosely use to refer to an entire class of plants comprised mainly of poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. These plants can cause allergic skin reactions. Some form of these plants grows almost everywhere in the United States except Alaska, Hawaii, and some parts of Nevada. Poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac take on different forms in different places. The leaflets may vary from groups of three to groups of five, seven or even nine. It is best to learn what these poisonous plants look like where you live.
Poison Ivy
Poison Sumac
Poison Oak The oil of poison ivy, called "urushiol", is a sticky substance that stays active a long time. It can be easily transferred to your skin, for instance, by touching your clothing, or from a pet, or even from burning poison ivy leaves. Just covering up against poison ivy with clothing and gloves isn't enough. Recent estimates show that poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac can affect 2 out of 3 people in the US. The allergic reaction can begin in as little as 10 minutes after exposure. Once the urushiol penetrates skin sensitive to poison ivy, the rash can form in a matter of 12 to 24 hours. The subsequent blisters and itching can last up to 10 days.
Poison ivy blister (close-up)
Poison ivy rash Poison ivy and oak rash may begin as an area of blister formation accompanied by stinging or itching. The blisters often appear in thin lines where the person has brushed against the plant. The blisters then break and the skin drains a clear yellow fluid ("weeps") for a period of time (determined by how sensitized the individual is). Crusting occurs as the fluid dries. Healing takes place generally within 2 to 3 weeks.

What causes poison ivy?
The rash that you get from poison ivy is caused by a chemical in the sap called urushiol . This chemical penetrates the outer layer of skin until it hits the dermis, and in the dermis an allergic reaction to the urushiol occurs. (See How Sun Tans and Sunburns Work for a good description of your skin and how it works.) From that definition, there are a number of things you can deduce about poison ivy:
  • Not all people "get" poison ivy. If your body does not mount an allergic reaction, then you can swim in urushiol and it will have no effect. It turns out, however, that the majority of people's immune systems react to urushiol after several exposures.
  • You cannot get poison ivy unless you come in contact with the sap that contains urushiol. However, it is incredibly easy to come in contact with it. You can get it from the plants itself. You can get it from touching your shoes or pants if they have rubbed against poison ivy plants. You can get it from your dog's or cat's fur if they walk through poison ivy. One of the worst cases I ever got came from my dog, who apparently walked through some at a rest stop during a trip and then fell asleep in my lap for the rest of the ride...
  • The urushiol has to penetrate the skin to get to the dermis, so thin skin will show symptoms before thick skin will.

Octopuses need three hearts, poison ivy itches only people By April Holladay for USA TODAY Q: I know that the octopus has an extremely high blood pressure, but how high is high? What is a typical octopus systolic/diastolic reading? They make eye contact with you, reach toward you, respond to you. Octopuses mesmerize people. NOAA A: People rarely measure an octopus' blood pressure. I quizzed many experts to find this: The systolic and diastolic pressures of octopuses at rest are 27/15 millimeters of Mercury, says Martin Wells, a reader at the zoology department of Cambridge University and author of Civilization and the Limpet. It is high for many marine animals but not for mammals. Humans' systolic pressure (measured when the heart contracts to squeeze the blood out) is about 120 millimeters of mercury. The lowest (diastolic) pressure (measured when the heart relaxes) is about 80 millimeters. The blood pressure of an octopus is about a fifth that of humans. However, the octopus systolic pressure is twice that of a lobster. Mammals developed more efficient circulatory systems than non-mammals and have correspondingly higher blood pressures.
