Solex/The 198$$ - split 12"
Progeria
New York's Progeria Records is keeping the split 12" format alive with this unlikely pairing: Solex, from the Netherlands, and the 1985 (here with augmented $$ form). Solex presents a pop masterpiece, a cover of the Echo and the Bunnymen song "The Cutter." Catchy as all hell, it lurches along and sounds not unlike something by the Slits or the Raincoats, though with an updated arrangement for the 90's. The main riff is jerky and repetitive, but never harsh. Her vocals are soft, playfully driving a melody over the unique textures of guitar and electronic-influenced percussion. The 1985's side is labeled "Treasure of the Nervous Nothing," though it actually contains three songs. The first begins with some rather anthemic powerchording, accented by some chanting in the background that seems so "straight" the 1985 can only be mocking it. The verse quickly falls into a sneering vocal with the trademark '85 angular guitars, although the piece sounds unusually whimsical. The second song is a more jagged and dark piece that makes me think of original drummer John Roman's description of the band: "Like AC/DC, only played by robots." The record is marked by very tight productionunlike the chaotic mess that the previous 1985 records have been (and I mean that in a good way), "Treasure of the Nervous Nothing" pulls together the band and gives a framework to the guitar riffs. The third track sounds like a faster version of the second, only much shorter and bouncier, sputtering to a stop after one verse. Although the record is brief, the two sounds actually work well together, despite the different styles.

INNOVATION GRANTS FOR RESEARCH ON HUTCHINSON-GILFORD PROGERIA SYNDROME - NIA/NHLBI/NIDCR/NICHD Several institutes at the National Institutes of Health have announced a new initiative to support research on the mechanistic basis of Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS), often referred to as premature aging syndrome. The aim is to encourage research projects that will take a fresh approach to understanding the molecular basis of HGPS, and to interest new investigators in this field. PAR-02-097. • This is a picture of a child with Progeria What's Progeria ? Progeria is a rare congenital disorder characterized by the rapid onset of aging. Children with Progeria age much faster than normal children. Progeria was discovered by Jonathan Hutchinson in 1886, but it was not named until 1904 by Hasting Gilford. Progeria is sometimes called Hutchinson-Gilfore Syndrome after these two scientists. What causes Progeria ? One in four million children have Progeria. There is no definite answer of who will get Progeria, but there are three theories that offer explainations of what cause Progeria. The three theories are: new mutation, autosomal dominant, and autosomal recessive. What's the life span of children with Progeria? Children with Progeria can live to be seven years old to 27.5 years old with the average life span is 13 years old. What are the symptoms of Progeria ?

Progeria
[ No, I can't send you information or pictures for your school report. Read the comments. ] I usually don't get overly serious when I write Pings, but with the introduction of the store , I figured I'd explain a bit about where half of the proceeds are going to. Progeria is an extremely rare genetic aging disease. It affects one in every 4 to 8 million children; there are currently about 45 diagnosed cases worldwide, for a total of about 100 diagnosed cases in the last century. Progeria causes the affected children to age internally at seven times the normal rate, meaing a 10-year-old child with Progeria has the respiratory and circulatory problems of someone his grandfather's age. It's an extremely sad disease, as there is no cure and there is little research being done because of its rarity. Children generally live only into their early teen years, with the oldest Progeria child living to 21. I became interested in Progeria about four years ago when I saw an episode of Jerry Springer (of all things) and was moved like never before. The kids affected by this disease had an incredible will to live and had the most positive outlook on life. So, I started the web's first resource page on Progeria. Thanks to movies like

Alternative Names: Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The exact cause of progeria is unknown, although a hereditary component may be involved. Progeria is a rare condition but has come into public awareness because its symptoms strongly resemble normal human aging as well as the appearance of several affected children in movies on national television.
Progeria results in rapid aging of children, beginning with growth failure during the first year of life that results in disproportionately small bodies given the size of their heads. The children are thin with baldness , wizened narrow faces, and old-appearing skin.
Children with progeria develop early atherosclerosis. The average lifespan is the early teens, some patients live up to 30 but lifespan is shortened. The cause of death is usually related to the heart or a stroke as a result of the progressive atherosclerosis.
