US TOO International, Inc. Prostate Cancer Survivor Support Groups
Phase I Trials
Phase II Trials Phase III Trials Participation ... Trials Listing by Phase Clinical trials are organized studies conducted to answer specific questions about new treatments or new ways of using an already known treatment. Every study is conducted in a manor that answers very specific questions to try to increase medical knowledge and find new and better ways to treat patients. New cancer treatments must prove to be safe and effective in scientific studies with a certain number of patients before they can be made widely available.
US TOO seeks for its members greater access to trials. It is estimated that only about 5% of eligible patients participate in clinical research. Patients take part in clinical trials for many reasons. Usually they hope for benefits for themselves. They may hope for a cure of their disease, a longer time to live, a way to feel better. Often they want to contribute to a research effort that may help others. Patients should choose if they want to take part in a study only after they understand both the possible risks and benefits. All patients in clinical trials are carefully monitored during and after participating in the trial.
Through clinical trials, researchers learn which approaches are more effective than others. A new treatment is always first studied in the laboratory. A new drug will be considered if it is found that it changes cells, or parts of cells, in a way that suggests that it will destroy cancer or help the body handle the side effects of cancer treatment. Based on what researchers learn from laboratory studies, and sometimes earlier clinical studies and standard treatments as well, they design a trial to see if a new treatment will improve on current treatments.

Pc Spes and Prostate Cancer
I'm Jean Curie, a 56 year old man with advanced prostate cancer. I was diagnosed in august '98 with advanced prostate cancer with metastases to all the bones except the head. After the conventional hormonal treatment I became hormon refractory and stopped responding in april '99. My PSA rose from 18.7 to 112 in a few month's. Then I discovered PC SPES, it literally saved my life. My current PSA (02/09/00) is 0.5 and the only treatment is 3x3 capsules of PC SPES and 15 grams Modified Citrus Pectin each day. I know people who are using pc-spes for years, unfortunately there are also people who stopped responding to pc-spes after a certain period of time. Pc-spes has lengthened my survival time now with almost 1 year. UPDATE 15/10/02 : pc-spes and spes are not available anymore because Botaniclab, the manufactor has closed. I am using now Prostasol with imupros, and my current PSA is 6.1

Introduction
This National Cancer Institute (NCI) booklet contains important information about cancer of the prostate . Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men in the United States (other than skin cancer). Of all the men who are diagnosed with cancer each year, more than one-fourth have prostate cancer. This booklet mentions some possible causes of prostate cancer. It also describes symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and followup care. It has information to help men with prostate cancer and their families cope with the disease. Research is increasing our understanding of prostate cancer. Scientists are learning more about the possible causes of prostate cancer and are looking for new ways to prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat this disease. Because of this research, men with prostate cancer now have a lower chance of dying from the disease. The Cancer Information Service and the other NCI resources listed in the "

Fish Oils and Breast/Prostate Cancer

MILAN, ITALY. The association between the intake of various fats and oils and the risk of breast cancer has been the subject of several studies. There is still no real consensus as to which fats are beneficial and which are not. The evidence for a protective role of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the main components of fish oils, is probably the strongest.
Researchers at the Italian National Cancer Institute have just completed an investigation aimed at clarifying the association between fat intake and breast cancer risk. A total of 4052 postmenopausal women were followed for an average of 5.5 years. During this time 71 cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed. The cancer patients were matched with 141 controls. All study participants had blood samples drawn and red blood cell (erythrocyte) membranes were analyzed for their fatty acid content. The researchers point out that erythrocyte membranes are good biomarkers for not only dietary fat intake, but also for other dietary and hormonal factors.

Foundation Until There is a Cure,
We Will Provide the Means to Cope!!

Hello, I'm Virgil Simons, welcome to my On-line Guide to Fighting Prostate Cancer . At the age of 48, after the results of my first PSA test, I was told that I might have prostate cancer. Staring into an abyss that seemed without hope, I questioned - was I going to die of cancer as my mother had?.......what treatments were possible?......could I survive?!
After a sufficient period of anger, self-pity and general confusion I made a decision - I AM GOING TO LIVE!!!! From that point on it was a matter of whether it would be on my terms or the prostate cancer's. KNOWLEDGE would be the edge to tip the balance to my favor - . But where to look, who to believe Then I saw my computer and the answer was evident and manifest - use this information highway as the road to save my own life.
In the eight years since that first diagnosis, through to a successful radical prostatectomy and subsequent clean PSA's, access to the Internet provided me with the information, dialogue with health care professionals and other survivors needed to regain control of my life. I became a partner with my doctors in deciding what was the best treatment for me that would be the greatest chance for cure and retention of the quality-of-life I desired!!

Study: Mineral selenium cuts risk of prostate cancer
August 22, 1998
Web posted at: 8:58 a.m. EDT (1258 GMT) From CNN Health Correspondent Elizabeth Cohen ATLANTA (CNN) Some 40,000 men die every year from prostate cancer, but a new study says what a man eats may help prevent the disease. The study, published by the National Cancer Institute, found men who had the highest intakes of the mineral selenium cut their cancer rates by one-half to two-thirds compared to men with the lowest intakes of selenium. "The notion that vitamins and minerals might prevent prostate cancer is a particularly exciting thing," said Dr. Philip Taylor of the National Cancer Institute. Selenium is found in fish, meats, grains and seeds in varying amounts. But it is also available in supplements. Researchers have found that taking 200 micrograms a day cuts the risk of getting prostate cancer.

Study: Vitamin E reduces prostate cancer risk, deaths
Vitamin E supplements VXtreme Video CNN Medical Correspondent Steve Salvatore reports March 17, 1998 Web posted at: 5:58 p.m. EST (2258 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) Daily doses of Vitamin E reduced prostate cancer risk by a third and the disease's death rate by 41 percent in a study of thousands of smokers. "This study for the first time really gives us that ray of hope that with something simple like a vitamin supplement, in this case a vitamin E supplement at a relatively modest dosage, that we can actually intervene, can actually hope to prevent prostate cancer," said study co-author Dr. Demetrius Albanes. The study, which was conducted in Finland, also found that a form of vitamin A had no effect on reducing cancer. A report on the findings will be published Wednesday in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Both vitamin E and beta carotene, the form of vitamin A used, are antioxidants compounds which may prevent cancer-causing agents from damaging cells. However, only vitamin E appears to give a statistically significant protection against cancer, said Albanes, a National Cancer Institute researcher who participated in the study with researchers from the University of Helsinki.

MEAT
The Recipe For Prostate Cancer
In the West, prostate cancer is the second largest killer of men after lung cancer. A international study recently conducted by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School showed that men who eat the most meat and dairy products run the greatest risk of dying from the disease. Published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (1998), the report confirmed that men who eat plenty of grains and nuts are the least likely to die from prostate cancer. The study was based on a survey of cancer deaths in 59 countries. It corroborated the results of earlier investigations into the role of a meat-based diet in cardiovascular disease and cancer. A higher intake of cereals, nuts and oil seeds, on the other hand, has a protective effect. Thus the plant-based diets found in many less-advanced societies are the healthiest - as long as people get enough to eat. "For prostate cancer and cancers of other sites that are sensitive to serum (blood) hormone levels, animal fat may influence the risk for cancer by raising adult's sex hormone levels", the report notes. The third-biggest cancer killer in the United States is colon cancer - another thoroughly nasty disease. Colon cancer, too, has been strongly linked with a diet high in animal fat and low in fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products.
