We had breastfeeding problems from the start: first we were seperated at birth and then later she developed a fever and was taken to another ward where she was given formula (despite my protests). Poor Ingrid! I tried to breastfeed her, but she was so confused she just cried. It would take up to two hours for her just to get latched on. So I pumped and fed her with a spoon (after having my milk weighed by staff). I felt like a total failure. After five days I finally found someone who had the necessary skills to get Ingrid latched on again properly. After the longest week of my life we went home. A week later an ache began deep in the center of my breasts. They felt bruised and my nipples started to hurt, shifting in colour from red to white. When I asked, I was told this was perfectly normal. I had a thrush test done, that proved negative. As the days passed nursing became more and more painful. At three weeks I began using a nipple shield just to cope. At the weekly check-ups Ingrid was gaining weight slowly. I was asked to supplement with formula, but refused. Then I went home and cried, feeling like a total failure again. When Ingrid increased her feedings at around five weeks I used Syntocinon spray to help the let-down (and lessen the pressure on the nipple). I began to wonder if something wasn't seriously wrong. I tried to get a friend to nurse Ingrid, hoping she would be able to say if Ingrid was doing something wrong with her mouth, but Ingrid refused to cooperate.

What is the treatment? I have been told it is caused by low blood pressure and by overactive arteries. One suggested treatment was verapamil (for high blood pressure). I have low blood pressure and am worried verapamil would take it dangerously lower. Please help! Thanks! Raynauds syndrome is characterized by episodic painful blanching of the fingers and is thought to be caused by digital artery spasm. It was first described by Raynaud in 1862. Over half of the patients with this have some underlying systemic disease such as a connective tissue disorder. Local trauma such as pneumatic drills can induce the symptoms. Certain drugs can also induce symilar problems as well as vascular thoracic outley syndrome. Treatment is aimed at prevention of precipitating factors. Surgery has been tried on the sympathetic truck with variable and generally not very effective results. Calcium channel blockers have been used such as verapamil in some patients but can affect the blood pressure. medications aimed at affecting prostaglandins are also being explored due to there vasodilating effects. My right foot tends to "freeze" when we go to the mountains. Associated Conditions So what is an Associated condition? Lets look at Arthritis, Rheumatism or any combinations of the two. Millions of people in the world suffer from those conditions but very few of them have Lupus. However sure as hell every Lupus sufferer has some kind of arthritic/rheumatic condition. Ergo they are associated conditions! Maybe that is a little simplistic but if we take for instance the Raynauds Phenomenon we will see that it occurs along with a number of other diseases one of them being Lupus and as we examine each of these conditions we will see the thread between all of them and Lupus. In addition to those conditions I have included two others with direct connections with Arthritis/Rheumatism and are accepted as being associated with or caused by Lupus. They are Fybromyalgia and Vasculitis. All of the above conditions/syndromes, call them what you like have a strong connective tissue disorder/autoimmune disease connection and all of them require all or some of the Lupus treatments The story doesn't end there, as there are also the conditions caused by the side effects of the cocktail of drugs Lupus sufferers are required to take. Clinical Immunology Lab Scleroderma Scleroderma is a connective tissue disease, the origin of which is unknown, characterized by fibrosis, or thickening by scar tissue, of the skin and sometimes internal organs. Since many of the patients have autoantibodies in the blood it is considered an autoimmune disorder. Almost all patients with scleroderma have Raynauds phenomenon and with exposure to cold temperature their fingers and sometimes toes become painful and turn first white, then blue and red. Scleroderma can be divided into those with limited skin involvement or those with more generalized skin involvement. Limited skin disease can be accompanied by additional features including skin Calcinosis, Raynauds phenomenon, abnormalities of the Esophagus (food pipe), Sclerodactyly (tightening of skin on the fingers) and skin Telangiectasias (spider veins). This type of scleroderma is referred to as CREST syndrome.
