Reiter's Syndrome
Reiter's syndrome is a disorder that causes three seemingly unrelated symptoms: arthritis, redness of the eyes, and urinary tract signs. Doctors sometimes refer to Reiter's syndrome as a seronegative spondyloarthropathy because it is one of a group of disorders that cause inflammation throughout the body, particularly in parts of the spine and at other joints where tendons attach to bones. (Examples of other seronegative spondyloarthropathies include psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and inflammatory bowel syndrome arthritis.) Inflammation is a characteristic reaction of tissues to injury or disease and is marked by four signs: swelling, redness, heat, and pain. Reiter's syndrome is also referred to as reactive arthritis , which means that the arthritis occurs as a "reaction" to an infection that started elsewhere in the body. In many patients, the infection begins in the genitourinary tract (bladder, urethra, penis, or vagina). The infection is most commonly passed from one person to another by sexual intercourse. This form of the disorder is sometimes called genitourinary or urogenital Reiter's syndrome. Another form of the disorder, called enteric or gastrointestinal Reiter's syndrome, develops when a person eats food or handles substances that are tainted with bacteria.

*For Medical Professionals only, registration required Reiter's syndrome, (Hans Reiter, 1881–1969, Norwegian physician), a joint disease ( seronegative spondyloarthropathy ) with skin involvement in which a classic triad of urethritis, arthritis and conjunctivitis is common. An infectious cause is suspected, as the disease often follows an infection of the bowel or lower genitourinary tract. Men are affected much more commonly than women, who tend to develop the disease after intestinal disorders, including bacillary dysentery, amoebic dysentery and shigellosis. The characteristic skin lesion, termed keratoderma blenorrhagicum, affects the palms and soles most frequently. Superficial erythematous ulcerations may also be evident on the buccal mucosa and the tongue. The serum histocompatibility antigen HLA-B27 may be present in as many as 75% of patients.

REITER'S SYNDROME
Recurrences involving any combination of the clinical manifestations are common and are sometimes followed by permanent sequelae, especially in the joints. 'X-ray signs of permanent or progressive joint disease may be seen in the sacroiliac as well as the peripheral joints. Reiter's syndrome must be distinguished from gonococcal arthritis, especially when conjunctivitis has been mild or overlooked. Rheumatoid arthritis, idiopathic ankylosing spondylitis, and psoriatic arthritis must also be considered. Treatment is symptomatic. Antibiotics are ineffective. As in psoriatic arthritis, the most useful agents are the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents.

Story
I was diagnosed as suffering from Reiter's Syndrome in the summer of 2000. The cause/origin is unknown but it is suspected a bacteria that I came into contact with while living in Asia (Japan). There is relatively little known about the syndrome and most of what is known pertains to European men. I have read the HLA-B27 positive is a precursor to Reiters, except in Blacks (Africans) where HLA-27 negative is a precursor to Reiter's. I am curious to know more about this. Also, if one where mixed EuroAfrican how could the HLA-B27 test help or would it. Beyond how reiters is recognized I am also anxious to hear from anyone who has been living with the syndrome and how or if they have been able to control it. Please reply to me if you are anyone who can share your experience on frequency, severity, coping methods etc.

Story
I, too, was recently diagnosed with Reiters syndrome after being misdiagnosed for about 20 years with Ankylosing Spondilitis. I have had almost constant Irritable Bowel Syndrome for over 30 years and could never decide just what precipitated it. Over the years, I have had many flare ups of arthritis, iritis, and urethreitis, never tying them all to the same disease, until this week when I was seeing the doc for my eyes. I am on many prescription medications for these problems. I can't say that I've gotten any worse over the years, just flare ups over the past nearly 30 years. I, too, would like to hear from any other women who are dealing with this syndrome. Thanks and God Bless

  • arthritis – inflammation of the joints, conjunctivitis – inflammation of the membrane around the eye, urethritis – inflammation of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside the body.
Other membranes may also be affected, such as those of the mouth, vagina and penis, and a rash may also be present. The syndrome follows either an infection of the bowel or of the urogenital tract. The bowel infection can be caused by a variety of bacteria, such as Salmonella. The urogenital tract type often follows an infection of the urethra (the tube that takes urine to outside the body) with the organism Chlamydia and is 20 times more common in men than women. It usually occurs between the ages of 16 and 35 years. The first symptom is usually inflammation of the urethra, about two weeks after the infection. Pain may be felt on passing urine and a discharge may occur, which is sometimes bloodstained. Ulcers may also occur on the penis and in the mouth. In women, these symptoms are much milder and sometimes not noticeable at all. A red rash can appear, often on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. It usually forms crusts, which fall off and leave no scar.
