REYES SYNDROME WHAT IS IT AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Reyes Syndrome is a rare and often fatal illness that develops rapidly and can be a complication of the flu or chicken pox in children. It can also cause severe brain damage. Reyes Syndrome has been linked to the use of aspirin in the treatment of these viral infections. It is highly recommended that aspirin should not be given to children 19 years of age and under who are suffering from the flu or chicken pox. There appears to be no danger in giving aspirin to otherwise healthy children for simple pain or minor cuts or other injuries. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Hundreds die each year from food allergy and more than 30,000 others experience potentially life-threatening anaphylactic reactions from foods. Ninety percent (90 %) of all food allergic reactions are caused by: Egg Peanut Tree Nuts Fish Shellfish (Walnut, pecan, etc.) Milk Soy Wheat Children of parents with any type of allergy are particularly at risk. Even children without any family history of allergies can develop severe food allergies. At the beginning of each school year parents fill out a yellow emergency card that is kept in the clinic. Medical information, including food allergies, should be listed on the back and the treatment required. The cafeteria’s computer system will have food allergy information. This helps prevent accidental ingestion by flagging a student’s account at checkout from the cafeteria line. However, younger students do not go through the computer check out for their food to be evaluated. Please keep this in mind when children are ordering. Check with you child’s teacher before providing snacks or treats to your child’s class. Students should be educated on foods they need to avoid.
