Kawasaki Disease
Introduction
Kawasaki disease was first described in Japan in 1967. It is a distinctive clinical illness that is characterized by fever, redness of the eyes, diffuse red rash, redness and swelling of the hands and feet, as well as enlarged lymph nodes in the neck. Kawasaki disease is now the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children in the United States. Rheumatic fever used to be the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children.
Epidemiology
Kawasaki disease occurs most frequently in children under five years of age. Twenty percent of cases involve children five years of age and older. The peak age is 18 to 24 months of age. Approximately 3,000 patients are hospitalized in the United States every year with Kawasaki disease.
Etiology
The cause of Kawasaki disease is unknown. Several clinical features suggest an infectious agent. An association between exposure to rug shampooing and Kawasaki disease has not been confirmed in recent studies. Another theory suggests that Kawasaki disease is a variant of toxic shock syndrome, but this has not been confirmed.
Symptoms
There are three phases of Kawasaki disease. The first phase is characterized by fever, pus in the urine, red eyes, intensely red tongue, dry fissured lips, rash, swollen hands and feet, enlarged lymph nodes and abnormal liver test.

Comments at the Awards ceremony
Presented by Daniel E. Koshland
William Foege, this year's awardee of the Mary Lasker Award for Public Service, is long on wisdom, long on inventiveness, and long in the length of his legs. As you will hear from what I say, all of these measures of longitude are significant in his award. William Foege was Director of the Center for Disease Control when he set out with a few others to eradicate small pox from the world. Later the CDC under his direction unraveled the medical enigmas of Toxic Shock and Reyes Syndrome and issued early warnings about the spread of AIDS. When the Merck Company decided to make its drug against river blindness available free in Africa they said they would do so if William Foege were responsible for administrating the program. It was done so well that other companies followed suit and offered their drugs, also free, to underdeveloped and impoverished countries. A small glimpse of Dr. Foege and the enthusiasm he generates among coworkers, public officials, and natives in Africa can be seem in a couple of events in his life.

Press release
William Foege
Isolate and conquer
By imagining that he was a virus, Foege beat smallpox at its own game. He outsmarted the lethal microbe by zeroing in on its next potential victimsand inoculating them with a protective vaccine. This triumph provided the blueprint that public health workers used to obliterate smallpox from the planet.
In December of 1966, Foege was running a medical center in West Africa and awaiting a large shipment of smallpox vaccine. As a consultant to the CDC, he was planning a massive immunization campaign. The goal: Inoculate as many people as possible. This strategy was expensive, but conventional public health wisdom said it was the only choice; even with 90% coverage, outbreaks still occurred.
But the germ beat the vaccine shipment. One day, Foege got word that smallpox had hit a remote region in Eastern Nigeria. He needed to act immediately to prevent an epidemic, but adequate supplies were months away. He pretended he was the virus and schemed about how to ensure his own propagation. Then he realized the key: Strike susceptible people as quickly as possible. With this insight, he knew he needed to find those individualsbefore the virus did. The race was on.

http://members.tripod.com/vs8/chickenpox.htm
Chicken Pox
by Catie Elzie Description of Chicken Pox Chicken pox is characterized by red, itchy bumps on the skin. These bumps start out as small, pink spots that turn into blisters. These blisters cloud over and form scabs and eventually, in about four days, the scabs shrivel up and fall off. The places where the scabs were have pink dots that fade away after a few days. Most sufferers of chicken pox are usually children between the ages of two and six years old, although people of all ages can be infected. Babies six months old or younger seem to have a natural immunity to chicken pox. Causes of Chicken Pox The technical name of chicken pox is varicella. Chicken pox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus; varicella-zoster also causes herpes zoster. The virus is transmitted through airborne droplets and is highly contagious. The incubation period for chicken pox is two weeks and the sufferer is contagious for this time, even through there are no symptoms until 24 hours before the eruption of the pox. Different Types of Chicken Pox For the most part, there is only one form of chicken pox, but some children develop herpes zoster (shingles) as a reaction to the varicella virus.

General Information ... Trustees Report *A disease that affects the liver and brain
Reyes Syndrome can appear soon after a viral infection especially a flu-like illness or chickenpox. The disease affects children from infancy onwards. Although it does occur in adults, it is rarely recognised after 19 years of age. Children of both sexes and all races can affected. Reye-like illnesses are most likely to occur in infants under 4 years of age which may be due to an inherited metabolic disorder. Hon. Administrator and Treasurer

Social Science 360.003 Monday, Wednesday 10-12 a.m. Professor Max Heirich Peter Lurie, MD, MPH Institute for Social Research, Room 5055 The United States is plagued by a plethora of health problems, ranging from the effects of tobacco use to violence to environmental contamination to lack of access to medical care for large numbers of Americans, particularly the poor and members of minority groups. It is the premise of this course that the collection and presentation of relatively simple data in a form understandable to policymakers can have a significant impact upon health policy in this country. The main focus of the semester will be on executing that project. For this course, public health is defined broadly to encompass such areas as access to health care, food safety, tobacco use, illicit drug use, environmental exposures, occupational health, violence, public health aspects of medical illnesses such as AIDS or cancer.

Cons
This is a scam to get your money. The Bottom Line Excedrin Migraine can give you exactly what it was made to cure. Be careful, and stay away from it. Full Review Opening Commentary I saw it featured in another review, that someone said excedrin migraine is not for children or teenagers. This reason is because aspirin is supposedly related to reyes syndrome, or whatever. I am 18, and have used many aspirin products for my migraine headaches for awhile now. Anyway, I went to a doctor a few years back, and he recommended some aspirin products for my migraines. My mom expressed her fears of reyes syndrome, and the doctor didn't seem to have any. He then told us that newer studies show that aspirin really might not have anything at all to do with reyes syndrome. So simply put, this product can be safe for teenagers to take. Just as long as you are careul not to over dose on it. Follow the rules and take precautions, as with dealing with any drug, over the counter or prescribed.

58. Influenza
adolescents, some health care practitioners recommend acetaminophen (Tylenol) ratherthan aspirin because of the remote possibility of invoking reyes syndrome.
http://scc.uchicago.edu/influenza.htm
INFLUENZA As headlines repeatedly tell us, influenza occurs in periodic worldwide epidemics. Influenza, usually called the flu, is caused by a virus that spreads from one person to another in the spray from coughs and sneezes or through contamination of the hand by secretions. The virus enters the upper part of the respiratory tract through the nose or mouth, and it may also invade the rest of the tract including the lungs. Symptoms appear after an incubation period of one to two days. The incubation period is the time between the entry of the infection into your respiratory tract and the beginning of symptoms. Influenza is usually an epidemic disease affecting many people within a community, such as a college campus. In fact, one of the ways of determining whether an outbreak of respiratory infection is influenza is to look for rapid spread of symptoms. Usually, such epidemics occur in winter or early spring. Symptoms
The early symptoms of flu are sudden weakness and fatigue, chills, fever that may be as high as 104o F (40o C), sneezing, headache, muscular and joint pains, swollen glands and a sore throat. These are usually followed by a dry hacking cough and, often, chest pains. Later the cough produces mucus and a runny nose. The fever generally lasts for two to three days, with continued weakness for another few days. If there are no complications, recovery usually occurs within two to three weeks. Risks
Epidemics of influenza occur at unpredictable intervals. Sometimes there are as many as five or six successive winters without one but at other times there are two or three epidemics within the same community in a single year. In a severe outbreak, most people in an affected area will have at least a mild attack of the disease.
