Poster Description:
Experimental Production of Trisomy in Mitotic Human Cells - Experiments were done to ascertain the radiation induced frequency of nondisjunction in mitotic cells
- The cells were irradiated after removal from the body by 137 Cesium gamma rays for a total dose of 50 rads
- An additional purpose of the experiments were to compare the lymphocytes of parents that had children with Down Syndrome and control parents who had no history of trisomy-21 (a person has trisomy when they have a extra chromosome, making 3. One of the smaller chromosomes, chromosome 21, is present in triplicate; affected persons have trisomy-21. Another name for Trisomy-21 is Down Syndrome. True trisomy is usually found among children of older mothers and the children usually have an I.Q. of 70 or below)
- There was a higher frequency found of hypermodal cells, more than 46 chromosomes, with the ones that were irradiated; between the control and the parents of children with down syndrome .1% of the 28,000 cells were hypermodal with the irradiated cells, versus .025% in the unirradiated cells
- All of this may even suggest that, by way of the blood serum, exposure to radiation can have a genetic impact even if the germ cells, sex cells, are not themselves irradiated

What is the prognosis?
What research is being done? ... Organizations What is Reye's Syndrome? Is there any treatment? There is no cure for RS. Successful management, which depends on early diagnosis, is primarily aimed at protecting the brain against irreversible damage by reducing brain swelling, reversing the metabolic injury, preventing complications in the lungs, and anticipating cardiac arrest. It has been learned that several inborn errors of metabolism mimic RS in that the first manifestation of these errors may be an encephalopathy with liver dysfunction. These disorders must be considered in all suspected cases of RS. Some evidence suggests that treatment in the end stages of RS with hypertonic IV glucose solutions may prevent progression of the syndrome. What is the prognosis?

National Reye's Syndrome Foundation Reye's Syndrome, a deadly disease, strikes swiftly and can attack any child or adult without warning. All body organs are affected, with the liver and brain suffering most seriously. While the cause and cure remain unknown, research has established a link between Reye's Syndrome and the use of aspirin and other salicylate-containing medications. In 1974, the National Reye's Syndrome Foundation was incorporated, becoming the first citizen group to generate a concerted, organized lay movement to eradicate Reye's Syndrome. The Foundation's top objectives are:
  • AWARENESS to aid in early detection and educate the public and medical communities about the risk involved with using aspirin and other salicylates.
SERVICE to provide emotional support and guidance to families experiencing the trauma of Reye's Syndrome.
RESEARCH to support investigation into the disease's cause, management, treatment and prevention, as well as study its impact on survivors.

Is there treatment for Reye's Syndrome?
What is Reye's Syndrome? Reye's syndrome is a rare, potentially fatal childhood disease. It usually strikes children under the age of 15 who are recovering from an upper respiratory illness, chicken pox, or influenza. What is the cause of Reye's Syndrome? The cause of Reye's syndrome is unknown, but studies have found a link with the use of aspirin during a viral illness. For this reason, aspirin should not be given without a doctor's approval to any child under the age of 16. Reye's syndrome is characterized by a severe increase of pressure in the brain and abnormal accumulations of fat in the liver. It develops as the child recovers from an infection, typically the first symptom is uncontrollable vomiting and nausea. Other early symptoms include lethargy, drowsiness, disorientation and irritability. The swelling in the brain may cause seizures, coma and the child may stop breathing. A child with Reye's syndrome needs immediate medical care. The earlier it is diagnosed, the better the chance for a successful recovery. Is there a treatment for Reye's Syndrome?

It is associated with the use of aspirin in children to treat chickenpox or influenza. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Reye's syndrome is most often seen in children from 4 to 12 years old, with a peak incidence at age 6. It is often associated with children who are given aspirin-containing medicines while they have either chickenpox (varicella) or the flu (influenza). The illness has a rapid onset and symptoms may vary greatly. Changes in mental status occur including delirium, combative behavior, and coma
Typically, Reye's syndrome follows an upper respiratory infection or chickenpox by about a week. It frequently begins with vomiting , which is persistent over many hours. The vomiting is rapidly followed by irritable and combative behavior. As the condition progresses, the child may become semi-conscious or

REYE'S SYNDROME
A syndrome of acute encephalopathy and fatty infiltration of the liver that tends to follow some acute viral infections. The cause is unknown, but viral agents (eg, influenza A or B, varicella virus), exogenous toxins (eg, Aspergillus flavus aflatoxin), salicylates, and intrinsic metabolic defects have been implicated.
Epidemiology
Salicylate use
Pathology
With light microscopy, uniform intracytoplasmic panlobular microvesicular fatty infiltration of the liver is seen, which stains with oil-red-O (a Sudan dye) on frozen section. On electron microscopy, sections of liver show mitochondrial injury that varies with the severity of the disease but includes glycogen depletion, smooth endoplasmic reticulum proliferation, peroxisome damage, and mitochondrial matrix swelling. Histologic abnormalities of the liver usually return to normal by 8 to 12 wk after disease onset. CNS findings are generally nonspecific and include cerebral edema, gyral flattening, swollen white matter, and ventricular compression. On microscopy, perineuronal and perivascular clear spaces with swollen astrocytes are seen.

... How to Choose a Pain Reliever
Read Advice Write an essay on this topic. Choose wisely and use sparingly
Aug 02 '00
There are several factors which affect the effectiveness of OTC pain relievers. There are also factors that determine the safety of these pain relievers. Knowing your own body and medical history will greatly help you find the one that's right for you.
How old are you?
Children should never be given aspirin, due to the link to Reyes Syndrome, which leaves acetaminophen and ibuprofen as the only other options. However, a daily aspirin regimen has been proven to reduce the risk of heart attacks and aid in a faster recovery in older adults.
Are you pregnant or nursing?
The debate rages on regarding the benefits of an aspirin regimen in pregnancy versus the possible complications due to its use. 15 years ago, pregnant women were cautioned to avoid the use of aspirin. This was because it had been found to inhibit prostaglandin formation, an action that might contribute to a prolonged pregnancy or labor, postpartum bleeding, and increased risk of perinatal death or low birth weight. More recently, drugs such as aspirin, that inhibit prostaglandin synthesis, have been used to treat premature labor and in clinical trials to control or prevent pre-eclampsia. Nursing mothers are still cautioned not to use aspirin because it is passed on to the infant and brings us back to the risk of Reyes Syndrome.
Do you have pre-existing medical conditions?
