Preventing Rickets Requires More Than Living in Sunny Climate
Rickets can be caused by a deficiency of vitamin D in the diet or a lack of exposure to sunlight. Ultraviolet light triggers a reaction in the skin that helps the body synthesize its own vitamin D, which is used to help the body absorb calcium, the key bone-building nutrient. People with darker skin need more sunlight than their paler counterparts. The bone disorder rickets can strike adolescents who live in sunny climates. Investigators report on 1 male and 20 female adolescents living in Saudi Arabia developed rickets. The findings suggest that even in sunny environments, adolescents, who are undergoing rapid growth, may be vulnerable to the disease.

http://www.gnc.com/health_notes/Concern/Rickets.htm
Rickets/Osteomalacia Children with rickets have abnormal bone formation resulting from inadequate calcium in their bones. This lack of calcium can result from inadequate dietary calcium, inadequate exposure to sunshine (needed to make vitamin D), or from not eating enough vitamin D egg yolks and dairy products Rickets can also be caused by conditions that impair absorption of vitamin D and/or calcium, even when these nutrients are consumed in appropriate amounts. Activation of vitamin D in the body requires normal liver and kidney function. Damage to either organ can cause rickets. Some variations of rickets do not respond well to supplementation with vitamin D and calcium. Proper diagnosis must be made by a healthcare professional. Osteomalacia is an adult version of rickets. This condition is treated with vitamin D, sometimes in combination with calcium supplements. Osteomalacia should be diagnosed, and its treatment monitored, by a doctor.

Rickets and Vitamin D Glisson, Francis. A Treatise of the Rickets: Being a Disease Common to Children..... . London: P. Cole, 1651. This book was one of the first pediatric texts published in England, and is one of the earliest instances of collaborative medical research, reporting the observations of Francis Glisson and seven other contributors. Francis Glisson (1597-1677) was a scholar, a scientist, a physician, and a born investigator. His description of rickets was complete; however, he did not recognize the part that diet played. It was not until 1918, that Edward Mellanby, experimenting with dogs, showed that diet was the determining factor, and that cod liver oil could prevent rickets. In chapter 22 of his Treatise of the Rickets , Glisson gave a clear description of infantile scurvy and showed that, though it often accompanied rickets, it was a separate disease entirely. Causes and Risks Rickets is a disorder caused by insufficiency or inefficient action of activated Vitamin D in the body during childhood. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that may be absorbed from the intestines or may be produced by the skin when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet light (particularly sunlight). It is converted to its active form by the body in 2 steps, occurring first in the liver and completed in the kidneys. Rickets is a painful defect in the legs which I think results from Vitamin D deficiency. This music will attempt to integrate very unusual themes and lurid, cerebral subject matter into a sound that could almost be rock and roll except for a curious pleasure/pain principle interlaced with it's derranged time signature changes and key juxtapositions. However, since you can kind of dance to it, we call it Rickets. We are an amalgarhithm of Puerco and Veronica Eats Too Many Paint Chips.

Introduction
Vitamin D is necessary for proper bone growth, but it is not found in many foods naturally. It is synthesized in the skin with exposure to sunlight, but many babies do not get much exposure to the sun for a number of reasons, such as not spending time outdoors and wearing clothes, hats, or sunscreen. The darker an infant's skin, the more sun exposure is needed to synthesize vitamin D. Although breastfeeding is the ideal form of nutrition for infants, it does not supply the vitamin D needed for healthy bone growth. Nutritional rickets is a condition in which children's bones are too soft and do not develop properly. Thanks largely to vitamin D supplementation of infant formula and recognition of the need for sunlight, rickets had become largely a thing of the past in the United States. However, cases of nutritional rickets among babies have been on the rise recently.

Who is at risk of vitamin D deficiency? In Britain the people most at risk of vitamin D deficiency are those who, for one reason or another, get little exposure to sunlight. Immigrants from Asia, particularly women and children, are at risk, as are elderly people living at home but not getting out and elderly people in some residential and nursing homes. What are the symptoms of osteomalacia and rickets? In osteomalacia there may be widespread bone pains and sometimes muscle weakness. Fractures can occur. In rickets aches and pains may occur and there may be visible enlargement of some bone ends such as at the wrists. How do we test for vitamin D lack?

There are two sources of vitamin D:

formation in the skin through exposure to sunlight.
There are few dietary sources of vitamin D. The best ones are fatty fish such as salmon and sardines, and margarines supplemented with vitamin D. Milk contains added vitamin D in the USA but not in the UK. Most people in the UK get most of their vitamin D from exposure of the skin to sunlight. The average person has enough vitamin D stored in their body to last for two or three years.
