Just because your pet's getting balder doesn't mean he's suddenly getting older. In fact, if his coat is starting to resemble the putting green on the 18th hole, it could be due to the fungal infection called ringworm. Dogs and cats of all ages may occasionally get ringworm, a type of fungus that causes ringlike, flaky, bald patches on the head, ears, paws and back, says Frank L. Moore, D.V.M., a veterinarian in private practice in Westminster, California, who specializes in small animal medicine. It can also infect the nails, he adds. While ringworm often goes away on its own within one to three months, in the meantime it can make your pet uncomfortably itchy as well as ugly. Worse, it's contagious both to pets and people, says Dr. Moore. To clear up the infection fast, here's what vets recommend. For Dogs and Cats Take a little off the top. Trimming hair around the bald spots will help prevent the fungus from spreading and also make the area easier to treat, says Lauren Prause, D.V.M., a veterinary resident in small animal internal medicine in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in Fort Collins.

Despite the name, the cause is really a surface fungus - not a worm! The name derives from a time when medicine did not know what caused disease. Because of the circular appearance, it was originally thought to be a "worm" under the surface! (Horrible thought!!) Actually it belongs to a group of fungus called dermatophytes - which means that it survives only in the non-living surface tissues of the body such as superficial skin layers hair fingernails.
There are a number of different fungal types which cause ringworm. All are lumped under the group name of "Tinea," with the next part of the name describing the area of the body where it is found, i.e., "Tinea Capitis" (scalp) ; "Tinea Corporis" (body) , etc. Where does it start? Children primarily get it on the scalp (this is uncommon for adults) ; adults experience it on the trunk, neck, extremities and skin folds.

Sheep exhibitors, as you prepare for summer shows, examine how you prepare your sheep for the show ring. Washing and shearing removes the natural lanolin and suint that protects sheep from getting some diseases. Anyone who shows sheep this summer should be aware of ringworm and a ringworm-like disease that can be transmitted from infected sheep to humans. One ringworm type disease, caused by a fungus, is currently being called "club lamb" fungus. Ringworm of animals is caused by two genera of fungiMicrosporum and Trichophyton. In most cases, these fungi are obligate parasites of the skin and hair (wool). They are highly contagious from animal to animalparticularly in dense population conditions. The infections not only transmit readily to other animals, but they often transmit to human attendants of the animals and cause severe skin lesions. When animal dermatophytes infect humans, the disease is usually more severe clinically than the corresponding disease in their normal animal host. Acute inflammatory skin lesions may develop that are accompanied by scar formation. The past couple of years, we have had outbreaks appear to be present where show-fitted sheep have become infected and are readily transmitting the infection to other sheep (at home and in the show arena) and to human attendants. Sheep that are extensively groomed and bathed seem to be more susceptible to infection. The causative fungus appears to be a Trichophyton sp. that may be related to a variety of T. verrucosum. Infection results from direct contact with infected animals as well as by indirect contact through clippers, brushes, combs, blankets and contaminated pens. Unless vigorously disinfected, these materials may remain infectious for several years.

Check out the following http://www.ompetproducts.com/ringworm.html Update (Dec. 16, 2002): Program has not had the success hoped for. In my opinion probably because it is required to be given with a meal. Clorox still works very well. 2-3 treatments diluted by 5 or 10 parts of water should do it. Just be sure to wash it off very well with water. Ringworm, a fungus which attacks the skin of cats is the scourge of cat breeders. Although it is not life threatening, and will disappear of its own accord in a few months it is devastating if you are trying to manage a cattery. The fungus manifests itself as skin lesions (roundish spots) which lose all the hair in about 2 weeks. On Siamese when the new hair comes in it will be darker, leaving spots in the fur which take 6 months to a year to disappear, thus ruining the show potential of the cat. The fungus mostly attacks kittens. All present treatments require that the animal be isolated for the course of the treatment which is 3 to 6 weeks. A 10 Second Cure For Ringworm?

    RINGWORM
Ringworm is a transmissible infectious skin disease caused most often by Trichophyton verrucosum , a spore forming fungi. The spores can remain alive for years in a dry environment. It occurs in all species of mammals including cattle and man. Although unsightly, fungal infections cause little permanent damage or economic loss. Direct contact with infected animals is the most common method of spreading the infection. Spores germinate and attack the shafts of the hair and the surface layers of the skin. Exudates ooze from the damaged skin and mix with debris from skin and hair forming a crusty scab. The grayish-white scab is noticeably higher than the surrounding skin. Ringworm is most frequent on the head and neck, but it may be found over the entire body in severe cases. Infection spreads from the center outwards and resulting in a circular lesion. Scabs fall from older lesions leaving a ring with a hairless area in the center. Hence, the name ringworm. Ringworm will usually cure itself without treatment. Common treatments include topical application of a 2% solution of iodine, thiabendazole paste or any fungicide used to treat athlete's foot in man.

    What is ringworm?
Ringworm is an infection of the skin which is caused by several types of fungi. The scalp, feet, groin, fingernails or toenails can also be affected. Who is susceptible to ringworm? Anyone can get ringworm. Children are more susceptible to certain types of the ringworm fungi, while other types occur equally in all age groups. Ringworm involving the nails is more likely to occur following an injury to the nails. What are the signs and symptoms of ringworm? Ringworm of the body usually consists of a flat, roundish lesion, the edge of which may be dry and scaly or moist and crusted. As the lesion expands, the center portion often clears to a normal appearance. Ringworm of the scalp typically begins as a small pimple which expands with time, leaving scaly patches of temporary baldness. Infected hairs become brittle and break off easily. Occasionally, raised moist and draining lesions can occur. When finger/toe nails are affected, the nails become thickened, discolored, and brittle, or they may become chalky and disintegrate with time. How is ringworm spread?

RINGWORM AND LUFENURON By: Carol W. Johnson, DVM PhD Microsporum canis, the most common cause of ringworm, is a parasitic fungus that is highly adapted to cats. Once introduced into a cattery, ringworm can rapidly spread and can infect most or all of the cats in a cattery before the breeder is aware that there even is a problem. In an infected cattery, the lesions often appear to resolve in adult cats after several months and kittens often will no longer show lesions as they approach maturity. In most cases, however, these cats still harbor low levels of fungus and serve to infect the kittens that are born into a cattery. Some of the biggest impediments to all catteries becoming ringworm-free has been the expense of treatment and the limited safety of the less expensive drugs. Griseofulvin (Fulvicin) is inexpensive and moderately effective against ringworm, but causes severe neutropenia and immunosuppression that can be fatal in up to 10% of the treated cats. Itraconazole (Sporonox) is much more effective and safer, but can cost up to $200 to treat a cat. Those of us who claim a ringworm-free cattery have often had to spend thousands of dollars to maintain that status and treatment of a large cattery is often beyond the economic ability of some breeders.

Ringworm Ringworm is a fungus infection of the scalp or skin. Symptoms include a rash that is often itchy and flaky . Ringworm on the scalp may leave a flaky patch of baldness. On other areas of the skin, ringworm causes a r eddish, ringlike rash that may itch or burn. The area may be dry and scaly or it may be moist or crusted. The same fungi that infect humans can also infect animals such as dogs and cats , and infections may be acquired from pets as well as from infected children. Ringworm is spread by direct contact with a person or animal infected with the fungus. It can also be spread indirectly through contact with articles (such as combs or clothing) or surfaces which have been contaminated with the fungus. A child with ringworm is infectious as long as the fungus remains present in the skin lesion. The fungus is no longer present when the lesion starts to shrink.
