Ringworm on the scalp may leave a flaky patch of baldness. On other areas of the skin, ringworm causes a reddish, ringlike rash that may itch or burn. The area may be dry and scaly or it may be moist or crusted. The same fungi that infect humans can also infect animals such as dogs and cats, and infections may be acquired from pets as well as from infected children. Ringworm is spread by direct contact with a person or animal infected with the fungus. It can also be spread indirectly through contact with articles (such as combs or clothing) or surfaces which have been contaminated with the fungus. A child with ringworm is infectious as long as the fungus remains present in the skin lesion. The fungus is no longer present when the lesion starts to shrink. If you suspect that a child in your facility has ringworm:
  • Notify the parents and ask them to contact the child's physician for diagnosis.

Ringworm (Tinea Corporis)
What is ringworm?
Ringworm is a fungus infection of the skin. It is often transferred to people from puppies or kittens who have ringworm If your child has ringworm, your child will have a ring-shaped pink patch on the skin. The patch will:
  • Usually be 1/2 to 1 inch in size with a scaly, raised border and clear center.
  • Get slowly bigger.
  • Be mildly itchy.
How long does it last?
Ringworm responds well to appropriate treatment.
How can I take care of my child?
  • Antifungal cream Buy Tinactin, Micatin, or Lotrimin cream at your drugstore. You won't need a prescription. Apply the cream twice a day to the rash and 1 inch beyond its borders. Continue this treatment for 1 week after the ringworm patch is smooth and seems to be gone. Successful treatment often takes 3 to 4 weeks. Encourage your child to avoid scratching the area.

Reducing the Risk . . . Cattle A Series on Safe Work Practices Dermatophytosis (Ringworm or Tinea) Dermatophytosis is a zoonotic disease which means that it can be transmitted between animals and humans. It is caused by a microscopic fungus called Trichophytum verrucosum that produces a skin infection of cattle. The fungus may persist in the environment in shed hair and skin for months to years. Several common disinfectants, when used appropriately, can destroy the agent but eradication is difficult. Ringworm in Animals Ringworm in Humans Ringworm in humans usually develops in 1-2 weeks after contact with infected cattle skin or hair. The disease begins with a small papule or local red "rash" on the skin. The spot may be dry or moist. Affected hair becomes brittle and breaks. The infection spreads outward leaving a dry, scaly central area and red, sometimes raised, newly infected outer edge or "ring". Lesions may or may not itch or be uncomfortable. Without treatment the lesions can linger for weeks to months. Safe Work Practices Wash your hands after animal contact and before you leave the laboratory or animal facility. Wash your hands after using the restroom.

What Is Ringworm?
Ringworm is a fungal infection that can occur anywhere on the body, including the scalp, the feet and the nails. "Anyone can get it," says Virginia Keane, M.D., director of the Pediatric Ambulatory Center at the University of Maryland Hospital for Children. Ringworm is caused by different fungal organisms called "dermatophytes." It is a common skin disorder, especially among children. It can also infect animals, such as cats and dogs. Ringworm, which is also called tinea, has nothing to do with "a worm." The disorder gets its name from the red-ringed rash that infected people typically develop on their body. This rash is often itchy and flaky, but it can also be damp and crusty. "Ringworm of the scalp causes a rash on the head and can often lead to temporary bald patches. Ringworm of the feet leads to a crackling of the skin near the toes, and ringworm of the nails can cause both fingernails and toenails to become brittle and discolored," says Dr. Keane, who also is an associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Did you know?
"Ringworm" is a misleading term that refers to the circular appearance of the fungal lesion. There are no worms involved. What are tinea infections (ringworm)?
Different fungi, depending on their location on the body, cause ringworm. Ringworm is characterized by ring-shaped, red, scaly patches with clearing centers. There is an increased risk of contracting ringworm if a person:
  • is malnourished.
    has poor hygiene.
    lives in a warm climate.
has contact with other persons or pets that have ringworm.
is immunocompromised by disease or medication.
What are the most common types of ringworm?
The most common types of ringworm include the following: athlete's foot (tinea pedis or foot ringworm)
This common condition mostly affects teen and adult males. It less frequently affects children before puberty. Contributing causes include sweating, not drying the feet well after swimming or bathing, wearing tight socks and shoes, and warm weather conditions. Symptoms of athlete's foot may include:
  • whitening of the skin between the toes scaling of the feet itchy rash on the feet blisters on the feet
jock itch (tinea cruris or groin ringworm) This condition is also more common in males and occurs more often during warm weather conditions. It is very rare in females. Symptoms of jock itch may include:

(The name ringworm, which dates from the 15th century, is a misnomer; no worm is involved and the rash is not always circular.) The fungi that cause ringworm can be found almost everywhere. As a result, ringworm infections are particularly common among children in day care and in the early school years. Once ringworm sets in, it nourishes itself by absorbing the dead, protein-rich material called keratin that comprises the outer layer of skin. Although it is not dangerous, ringworm can make a child very uncomfortable by causing itchiness and sometimes painful fissures in the skin. Ringworm of the scalp is also often quite unsightly since it causes the loss of hair in patches. WHAT CAUSES RINGWORM?

    Cause
Ringworm is caused by infection of the hair and surface layers of the skin by fungi. It occurs in all species of animals including man. Fungal infections cause little, if any, permanent damage or economic loss. However, because ringworm is a transmissable infectious disease, animals with lesions are barred from exhibitions or shows by regulations of the State Board of Animal Health. Infection of the skin and hair of cattle is most frequently due to Trichophyton verrucosum, a spore forming fungi. Spores are shed from the lesion by broken hairs or scabs from the lesion. The spores remain alive for years in a dry environment; and because they do, halters, grooming equipment, or even a barn can remain infective for years.
    Transmission
Direct contact with infected animals, particularly with cattle confined to a barn, is a common method of spreading the fungi. Some infected calves have a degree of natural immunity that prevents development of lesions; however, they can be a source of infection. Show calves are frequently infected from spore contaminated equipment that has not been properly cleaned. Spores germinate and attack the shafts of the hair and the surface layers of the skin. Exudate oozes from the damaged skin and mixes with debris from skin and hair, thereby forming a crusty scab. The scab is grey-white and noticeably higher than the surrounding skin. Infection spreads from the center outwards and results in the circular lesion 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Adjacent lesions may overlap and create larger infected areas. Lesions are most frequent on the head and neck, but they may be found over the entire body in severe cases. Scabs may fall from older lesions and leave a hairless area in the center, one that has a ring of exudate at the edge. Hence, the name ringworm.

Adult Medicine General Health Men's Health Women's Health ... Information Tinea (or Ringworm) Basic Information Tinea is a contagious fungal infection that affects the epidermal region of the skin. Skin is divided into three regions (the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous), with the epidermis being the outermost layer. Tinea most often occurs on the scalp, the body, the feet, and the nails. Tinea is also known as "ringworm". However, contrary to what the name suggests, this infection is not caused by worms. Rather, it is caused by a group of fungus organisms that are referred to as "dermatophytes". This type of fungus thrives on the dead cells and tissues that are the end result of hair, skin, and nail development. Tinea is extremely contagious. A person can contract tinea through direct skin contact with an infected person or pet. A person can also get tinea through indirect contact with an object or surface that an infected person or pet has touched. When a person has tinea, red scaly rings tend to appear on the skin. Several areas of infection will appear near each other, and the condition worsens if left untreated. As time goes on, the rings will become more and more developed and a pale center will appear. The rings will ultimately protrude from under the skin. The distinct rings are why some people have given tinea the name "ringworm". There are several different types of tinea. The types are differentiated according to the location on the body that is affected. The following is a breakdown of the common types of tinea.

Ringworm of the body is common. It can appear on the arms, chest, and abdomen, and more rarely on the face. It starts as a tiny red spot, which slowly grows in a circular fashion, clearing in the center as it enlarges. The edges remain reddish and scaly. Most children have a single lesion, but on occasion, a child will develop more. TREATMENT Ringworm of the body, feet, and groin can be treated easily with medicines like Tinactin, Lotrimin, and related compounds. The first treatment renders children noncontagious. Children can stay in school during treatment as long as the lesions are kept covered. RINGWORM OF THE SCALP (Tinea Capitis) Ringworm of the scalp typically has small patches of baldness (1-3 inches in diameter) that may well be unnoticed under long hair. Boys and girls are equally susceptible, but almost never after puberty. Since the infection affects the hair shaft itself, close inspection reveals tiny, broken-off hairs about 1/16 to 1/8 inch long. Ringworm of the scalp is highly contagious and spreads easily when children share hats, combs, hair ribbons, barrettes, or pillows.

Ringworm is a common fungal infection of the skin. The name is a misnomer since the disease is not caused by a worm. Description More common in males than in females, ringworm is characterized by patches of rough, reddened skin. Raised eruptions usually form the circular pattern that gives the condition its name. Ringworm may also be referred to as dermatophyte infection. As lesions grow, the centers start to heal. The inflamed borders expand and spread the infection. Types of ringworm Ringworm is a term that is commonly used to encompass several types of fungal infection. Sometimes, however, only body ringworm is classified as true ringworm. Body ringworm (tinea corporis) can affect any part of the body except the scalp, feet, and facial area where a man's beard grows. The well-defined, flaky sores can be dry and scaly or moist and crusty. Scalp ringworm (tinea capitis) is most common in children. It causes scaly, swollen blisters or a rash that looks like black dots. Sometimes inflamed and filled with pus, scalp ringworm lesions can cause crusting, flaking, and round bald patches. Most common in black children, scalp ringworm can cause scarring and permanent hair loss.

by dr. christine welch and cordie davis ontrary to popular belief, ringworm is not a worm at all but is a skin infection that is caused by a fungus. It can infect both animals and people and can easily be transmitted back and forth from pets to human family members once established in a household. The spores of ringworm fungus are found primarily in the soil and around people or animals who have the disease. Ringworm is characterized by rapidly growing circular patches of scaly, red skin. There is also marked hair loss in these areas and in some cases the skin will ooze a sticky, crusty substance. Both younger animals and people seem more susceptible to becoming infected with ringworm than are adults. Children should avoid handling animals infected with ringworm altogether. Any animals with suspicious looking skin abrasions should be checked by your veterinarian immediately because ringworm can be very difficult to get rid of once it becomes established in your home. Adults who must handle animals with ringworm should follow rigorous hygiene practices, washing hands well each and every time pets are handled. Ringworm is usually diagnosed with the help of ultraviolet light (in positive cases the area fluoresces green), in other cases skin scrapings or a fungal culture is necessary in order to separate ringworm from other skin conditions.
