Younger animals are much more likely to have ringworm than older ones since most pets and people have an immunity to ringworm after having had the problem before. That is why kids catch ringworm much more often than adults. There are adults however who seem to catch ringworm every time they come into contact with the fungus. If your physician is suspicious that a family pet is carrying ringworm, there are several ways we can diagnose the problem. Whenever there is an area of hair loss on a cat we should check for ringworm. There are 3 ways to diagnose ringworm fungus. First, about 20 per cent of ringworm fungus will glow under a black light. We call this the Wood’s light test. Since only 20 per cent glow, this means that 80 per cent of positive cases will not and we cannot positively say ringworm doesn’t exist if we have a "no glow" situation. Second, we can perform a ringworm culture. Crusts and hair are placed on a special growth medium which will grow the fungus and turn from yellow to red to indicate a ringworm positive situation. Third, when we suspect ringworm as one of many possible causes of a skin lesion, a biopsy will tell us if we have a ringworm infection as well as many other types of skin problems. If your physician is interested in finding out if the family pet has ringworm, and there are no skin lesions anywhere, we have a special method of checking. We take a sterile tooth brush and brush down the entire pet. Then we culture the bristles of the tooth brush. This method is very accurate in determining whether your pet carries ringworm without showing any outward signs.

The fungus can infect many parts of the body, but the most common are the feet (tinea pedis —athlete's foot), the scalp (tinea capitis), and the body itself. Most often the skin will have an itchy red patch which is in the shape of a ring. There is usually white scale on top of the red patch. The size can vary from very small to large enough to cover most of the human body. A person may develop one patch or many at the same time. Although ringworm is contagious, it takes vigorous contact to transfer the fungus. It is also important to know that not everyone is susceptible to contract ringworm. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict who is susceptible and who is resistant. Ringworm is transferred from human to human or from animals (dog/cat) to human. The fungus can also grow on the ground and on mats and can be transferred by hard physical contact. Ringworm can be prevented by ensuring that the mats are cleaned with soap and water and by physically covering the ringworm with a bandage. There are many medicines to treat ringworm Topically applied creams usually work well. These include products such as clotrimazole cream or Desenex. They can be bought over the counter and if used twice a day, the lesion should resolve within several weeks. There are also stronger prescription products (ketoconazole cream and others) which may work on some difficult-to-treat infections. Rarely, an oral medicine is needed. Several types of pills can be taken which will eliminate the fungus.

Ringworm Ringworm (also known as dermatophytosis) may sound like a worm or parasite but it is actually a fungus which lives on keratin (found in skin, hair and nails). Three species of ringworm are commonly found to infect felines. These are Microsporum canis (this is by far the most common cause of feline ringworm), Trichophyton mentagrophytes (usually contracted through contact with rodents), and Microsporum gypseum/fulvum (these are usually contracted from contact with spores in the soil). As well as being fairly contagious to other cats (and dogs although dogs get it less frequently than cats), ringworm is the most common zoonotic disease, meaning that it can be transferred from animals to humans, and its rate of infection is rising. So if your pet has ringworm you must take certain precautions to protect yourself, such as using gloves to handle your pet, and wearing an apron or clothing that you wash subsequent to handling the pet. Cats can be asymptomatic carriers so if you have multiple cats, or other pets and one pet has ringworm but the other seems symptom free... you may want to have him/her tested as well just to be cautious.
