Explains the importance of participating in rosacea clinical trials and how treatment research can produce some interesting and unexpected results.

New Treatments and Rosacea Clinical Trials
An estimated fourteen million Americans suffer from the persistent inflammatory skin condition rosacea. While the condition can affect all ethnicities and both sexes, fair skinned women over age thirty are most often affected. That's not to say that men are immune, in fact, men are more likely to have more severe symptoms than women, possibly because they tend not to seek treatment until the condition is quite advanced.
Symptoms associated with rosacea are facial redness, visible capillaries (telangiectasia), pimples, and eye irritation. Also seen is a condition called rhinophyma , a swelling of the tissues of the nose; this is seen in men more often than women, and occurs in advanced stage rosacea.
Treatment varies from individual to individual and depends on the symptoms exhibited and their severity. Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies continue to invest in research on new treatments. Current clinical trials and research studies explore and test safer and more effective treatment options, and potential causes.
The Value of Research: Periostat
As often occurs with pharmaceutical research, a drug used to treat one condition is found to affect a second, unrelated condition. This was the case with a drug used to treat adult periodontal disease:

What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a common skin disorder of the face. A red, flushed face may be the first sign of rosacea, a disease that affects an estimated 13 million adults in the United States. Who gets rosacea? Rosacea usually affects fair-skinned people aged 30 to 50 who tend to blush or flush easily. The first signs of rosacea include redness on the cheeks, nose, and forehead and possibly a gritty feeling in the eyes. In later stages, rosacea can cause pimples, increasing redness, and small, visible blood vessels. In advanced stages, the nose may become red, bumpy, and permanently swollen from excess tissue. What causes rosacea?

Background Information for Rosacea
Rosacea is a facial rash that occurs in middle-aged men and women. Approximately 13 million people in the United States have Rosacea. The cause of Rosacea is unknown. It affects people mainly in the 30s and 40s, especially those with fair-skin, blue eyes and of Celtic origin. Famous individuals with Rosacea include WC. Fields, Rembrandt and President Bill Clinton.
Rosacea used to be called "acne rosacea" but it is quite different from acne. The red spots and pustules are dome-shaped rather than pointed and there are no blackheads, whiteheads, deep cysts, or lumps. Sometimes the affected skin is swollen and hot. Rosacea affects the cheeks, nose and forehead - rarely it involves the trunk and upper limbs. Facial creams or oils, and topical steroids may aggravate Rosacea.
Rosacea is often accompanied by other features:
· A red face due to flushing and telangiectasia (persistent red veins).
· Red, sore or gritty eyelids. (Blepharitis)
· Sun exposure and hot and spicy food, drinks containing caffeine and alcohol often aggravate symptoms.

The parasite looks like a microscopic worm, and it feeds off our skin. It takes only 10days to grow from egg to full size, and it multiplies at an extremely rapid rate if not treated properly leading to acne rosacea- a bizarre type of skin rash that occurs primarily on the face. It was noted in their studies that babies did not have the parasite at birth. It was only contracted days later when babies were touched by other humans; the infection grows with us as we get older.

also check our site www.photofacial.com Rosacea is an extremely common complexion disorder characterized by facial redness, flushing of the nose, cheeks, forehead, chin and neck, dilated capillaries and occasionally acne-like outbreaks. Rosacea affects as many as 13 million Americans generally over the age of thirty. Several prescription creams and pills are available for rosacea that are effective in controlling the pimple-like outbreaks. Laser treatments have been developed to treat the unsightly capillaries. However, to date there has been no truly effective treatment to control or eliminate the embarrassing and uncomfortable flushing and redness that many rosacea sufferers experience on a daily basis. All patients saw improvement in redness, flushing and capillaries with the first treatment. Maximal improvement was seen in three treatments. Flushing was reduced on average 80%. In addition, all patients achieve much smoother skin, and smaller pores. Dr. Patrick Bitter Sr. also observed that the pimple-like breakouts improved or even stopped entirely when the flushing was eliminated. Some patients were even able to discontinue medications they had taken for years. Redness of the neck and chest is also treatable by this method. No adverse reactions or scarring was observed. In the words of Dr. Bitter
