This child has measles (rubeola). The child often develops a barking cough and runny eyes and nose about three days before the eruption starts. The red macules and papules start on the upper portion of the head, and then move downwards. They disappear in this same order after about 7 days.

Diluted patient serum is incubated with purified rubeola virus antigen bound to EIA plate wells. If antibodies to rubeola virus are present, they bind to the antigen and do not rinse off. Subsequently, when enzyme-labelled anti-human IgG is added to the reaction site, it binds to the immobilized antibodies. After washing and the addition of a chromogenic substrate and stop solution, specimens containing antibodies to rubeola produce a color endpoint reaction which is

Back to table of contents Measles (Rubeola) Measles is a very contagious viral illness caused by an RNA virus. It is found world wide and has a very distinct clinical picture. Clinical Course
  • After an incubation period of 8-12 days, the initial symptom is a fever, sometimes to 40C. Average time from exposure to rash is 14 days. This is followed by the development of the three Cís, cough, conjunctivitis, and coryza. Koplik spots, white spots on a red base on the buccal mucosa, will develop during this period prior to the development of the rash. The rash begins on the head and moves caudally. It is a maculopapular rash that is often confluent and not pruritic. It may last for up to a week and fades in order of appearance. It may be hemorrhagic. Variations and milder forms may occur if there is protective maternal antibody present or the child has recently received immunoglobulin. Individuals who have been immunized and have waning immunity, may have a milder disease.
  • Complications
  • Otitis and pneumonias that are of viral or secondary bacterial etiology. Croup syndromes Gastroenteritis including appendicitis like symptoms secondary to obscuring of the appendiceal lumen by proliferating lymphoid tissue.

Rubeola dureaza in jur de o saptamana.

    1. DEFINIÞIE Rubeola este o boalã infecþioasã acutã eruptivã a copilului ºi adultului. Clinic se caracterizeazã prin erupþie, febrã, limfadenopatie. Infecþia fetalã determinã malformaþii congenitale. 2. ETIOLOGIE: virusul rubeolic din familie Togaviridae. 3.
