Rubeola (Measles) What is rubeola?
Rubeola, also called 10-day measles, red measles, or measles, is a viral illness that results in a viral exanthem. Exanthem is another name for a rash or skin eruption. Rubeola has a distinct rash that helps aid in the diagnosis. It is spread from one child to another through direct contact with discharge from the nose and throat. Sometimes, it is spread through air-borne droplets from an infected child. This is a very contagious disease that usually consists of a rash, fever, and cough. What causes the measles?
Rubeola is caused by morbillivirus. It is mostly seen in the winter and spring. Rubeola is preventable by proper immunization with the measles vaccine. What are the symptoms of the measles?
It may take between eight to 12 days for a child to develop symptoms of rubeola after being exposed to the disease. It is important to know that a child is contagious one to two days before the onset of symptoms and three to five days after the rash develops. Therefore, children may be contagious before they even know they have the disease. During the early phase of the disease (which lasts between one to four days), symptoms usually resemble those of an upper respiratory infection. The following are the common symptoms of rubeola. However, each child may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

KANYARÓ, MUMPSZ, RUBEOLA ELLENI VÉDÕOLTÁS rubeola gyermekkorban általában jóindulatúan lezajló kiütéses vírusbetegség. Az ellene való oltást a rubeola vírus embriopátiát okozó hatása indokolja. A vakcináció célja a generációs korban lévõ fogékony nõk védelme, akiknek aránya a sze rológiai felmérések szerint 10-20% közötti. Ezeket a megbetegedés veszélyétõl mentesíteni kell, mivel az I., II. és a III. terhességi hónapban kiállott rubeola 50, 25, illetve 9%-os valószínûséggel okozhat magzati ártalmat. mumpsz a pubertás elõtt általában ártalmatlan gyermekbetegség. Szövõdményeinek valószínûsége elenyészõen csekély, különösen ritka a legjelentõsebb idegrendszeri komplikáció, a süketség.

Clinical Significance:
Since mass immunization began in the United States over two decades ago, the number of measles infections has been greatly reduced. As the incidence of measles has decreased, medical professionals have had less experience in the clinical diagnosis of the disease, placing greater emphasis on laboratory confirmation. Not easily diagnosed clinically, atypical measles have arisen in patients who received killed vaccines and have later come into contact with a wild strain of the virus. In addition, many individuals remain susceptible to measles virus because of vaccine failure or non-immunization. Screening for measles will aid in identifying these non-immune individuals. Detection of measles antibodies in patient serum will confirm seroconversion after vaccination and is a useful tool in diagnosing the rare but fatal subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), which may occur years after the original measles infection.
Low levels of IgM antibodies may occasionally persist for more than 12 months post-infection or immunization. Such a residual IgM response may be distinguished from early IgM response to infection by testing sera from the patient 2-3 weeks later for changing levels of specific IgM antibodies.

Measles, Koplik spots - close-up Measles on the back Antibodies Alternative names Return to top Rubeola Definition Return to top Measles is a highly contagious viral illness characterized by a fever cough conjunctivitis (redness and irritation in membranes of the eyes), and spreading rash Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Measles is caused by a virus. The infection is spread by contact with droplets from the nose, mouth, or throat of an infected person. The incubation period is 8 to 12 days before symptoms generally appear. Immunity to the disease occurs after vaccination or active infection. Before widespread immunization, measles was so common during childhood that the majority of the population had been infected by age 20. Measles cases dropped over the last several decades to virtually none in the U.S. and Canada because of widespread immunization, but rates have crept up again recently. Some parents are refusing to have their children vaccinated because of fears that the MMR vaccine, which protects against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella, can cause autism.
