I have slight numbness in the tips of my right index and middle fingers. I have also lost considerable strength in my right arm. Additionally, if I sit a certain way pins and needles go up and down my right arm. The neurosurgeon said short of surgery there is nothing I can do about this. He also indicated after six weeks the disc is still ruptured and that by the time it heals, in about a year, the damage to the nerve will be perminent, meaning I will always have weakness and possibly numbness in my right arm (I am right-handed). He also said that no healing has occurred in the six weeks since our first visit. I find this hard to believe because I was in excruciating pain six weeks ago and had hardly any muscle strength in my arm then and now I have no pain and a great deal of muscle strength. Before he did a hand test with me, I didn't even realize I still had weakness. I am able to go about my daily functions. I have done yoga on my own on and off for 25 years. I experience almost no pain. My feet and legs are numb and/or tingling. The numbness sometimes goes all the way up to my butt. The MRI shows a big dent in the spinal cord from the displaced disk. The doc recommends taking the disk out and fusing the two vertabrae to theoretically take the pressure off the spine and possibly return full feeling and function to my legs. Anybody out there had this problem and had treatment? I'd like to hear from you? What are the other treatments?

Cheng Back pain is one of the most frustrating chronic diseases. Degenerative disk disease is a back disorder that occurs as part of the aging process. It is usually caused by osteoarthritis of the spine, which irritates the vertebrae of the spine with excessive use. When the vertebrae become inflamed due to overuse, they work to heal themselves and leave calcium deposits and bone spurs as side effects. The pain and stiffness that result from this imperfect healing process are known as degenerative disk disease. Detailed Description Degenerative disk disease is a general classification including herniated or ruptured disk, prolapsed intervertebral disk, and others. The disks in the spine are like small sponges that rest between each vertebrae and act as shock absorbers. When arthritis compresses a disk, it tends to bulge out of its alignment; sometimes, it will rupture. When it does, the rupture will usually occur posteriorly. The displaced disk segment may then press on the spinal nerve as it emerges from the spinal cord, or on the cord itself.
