One to seven days after infection, the bacteria produce a toxin, a type of poison that travels through the bloodstream and causes the rash. This illness is called scarlet fever. Ten days of oral antibiotics or a single shot of penicillin will usually knock out the fever, sore throat, and headache, but the rash may linger. With treatment, most children will recover fully. Symptoms of scarlet fever vary, but usually you'll find: First day: fever from 101 to 104 degrees; red, sore throat; fuzzy tongue; white coating on tonsils; headache; swollen neck glands; sometimes vomiting.
