Mental Health Disorders Personality Disorders Schizoid Personality Disorder People with Schizoid Personality Disorder (SDD) share their flavor of eccentricity with those diagnosed with Paranoid Personality Disorder and Schizotypal Personality Disorder . Those with SDD, however, display detachment more than paranoia, and they lack the cognitive and perceptual distortions often seen in those with Schizotypal Personality Disorder. The range of emotion is quite limited and generally flat in people with SDD. They behave like hermits, preferring solitary activities to social contacts, and they get little pleasure from anything, including sex. As one would expect, given these attitudes, they have few confidants or close friends. The name of the disorder derives from the overlap of schizoid behaviors with those of people with schizophrenia. However, only rarely do people with SDD become schizophrenic; the disorder, though disturbing, is usually stable. As in the other personality disorders, it is difficult to change. Mental Health Disorders Personality Disorders Schizotypal Personality Disorder Schizotypal Personality Disorder (SPD) is similar to Paranoid Personality Disorder , but with less prominent paranoia , and to Schizoid Personality Disorder , but with cognitive and perceptual distortions. Those with SPD are notably deficient in their ability to relate to other people, except perhaps for close relatives. Most of them have very odd beliefs, including magical thinking and other superstitions. They may believe that events on television (for example) are somehow dependent on or related to them ( ideas of reference ). Their speech and appearance are likely to be peculiar. Like people with paranoia, they may be uncomfortable in social situations because of paranoid fears. Bizarre fantasies are not uncommon in people with SPD. SPD is more common than Schizoid Personality Disorder; it has been estimated to occur in as much as 3% of the general population. Fortunately, it rarely progresses into full-blown schizophrenia , although, like other personality disorders, it is difficult to treat.

    Personality Disorders
Personality refers to a distinctive set of traits, behavior styles, and patterns that make up our character or individuality. How we perceive the world, our attitudes, thoughts, and feelings are all part of our personality. People with healthy personalities are able to cope with normal stresses and have no trouble forming relationships with family, friends, and co-workers.

    Recognizing a Personality Disorder
A personality disorder must fulfill several criteria. A deeply ingrained, inflexible pattern of relating, perceiving, and thinking serious enough to cause distress or impaired functioning is a personality disorder. Personality disorders are usually recognizable by adolescence or earlier, continue throughout adulthood, and become less obvious throughout middle age. What Causes a Personality Disorder?
    Types of Personality Disorders
There are many formally identified personality disorders, each with their own set of behaviors and symptoms. Many of these fall into three different categories or clusters:

    Personality Disorders
What are personality disorders? For persons without a personality disorder, personality traits are patterns of thinking, reacting, and behaving that remain relatively consistent and stable over time. Persons with a personality disorder display more rigid and maladaptive thinking and reacting behaviors that often disrupt their personal, professional, and social lives. What are the most common types of personality disorders? Generally, personality disorders are divided into three subtypes (or clusters), and include:
    • Subtype Classification
      Cluster A: odd/eccentric
      Cluster B: dramatic/erratic
      Cluster C: anxious/inhibited
Examples of odd/eccentric (Cluster A) personality disorders:
    • paranoid personality disorder
Persons with this disorder are often cold, distant, and unable to form close, interpersonal relationships. Often overly, yet unjustifiably, suspicious of their surroundings, persons with paranoid personality disorder generally cannot see their role in conflict situations and often project their feelings of paranoia as anger onto others.
