What is Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia affects one in every 100 Canadians, impacting their lives and that of their immediate family. There are approximately 300,000 people who suffer from schizophrenia in Canada, of which 100,000 live in Ontario. The term schizophrenia comes from two Greek words: "schizo" which means split and "phrenia" which means mind. People who suffer from the illness do not, however, have a split or multiple personality. The illness was first recognized in the late 1800's and Dr. Kraeplin gave it the name of dementia praecox, meaning early dementia. Schizophrenia has always had a strong biological basis, making it more of a neurological disorder like Alzheimers, but in truth the illness is still a mystery. Most of what is known about schizophrenia has been learned in the last twenty years, particularly the last ten with the development of brain imaging technology, like MRI and PET scans. There is a fairly strong genetic component to the causation of schizophrenia but everyone has a 1% risk of developing it. The symptoms appear in late adolescence and early adulthood. In males the average age of onset is 18, in women 25. It appears that women get some protection from estrogen. The illness appears during the later stages of prefrontal cortex development and many of it's symptoms revolve around prefrontal cortex function. The whole picture is probably more complex than that. Schizophrenia is thought to be present at birth, a second or thrid trimester "insult" that may affect, at a minimum, the development of the hippocampus, the prefrontal cortex, and the thalamus.

Legal Notice Since My First Break... AN UPDATE Excerpts from an article by Dan Frey, Editor-in-Chief of New York City Voices
My first psychotic break with schizophrenia was summer 1998. I had asked then, where do I go from here? Though I've come a long way since my hospitalizations, I still have a hard road to travel. I am 23 years old. I don't want to tell people I have schizophrenia when I don't have to. But if I don't reveal it to people who are a part of my life, I carry a terrible burden... more What Do We Know About Schizophrenia?

Living with schizophrenia: It's possible with medication
Charlie Chastain says crimes such as the Capitol Hill shootings create obstacles for schizophrenics
From Medical Correspondent Rhonda Rowland October 15, 1998
Web posted at: 10:51 p.m. EDT (0251 GMT) ATLANTA (CNN) Names such as Russell Weston Jr., Theodore Kaczynski and John Hinckley Jr. evoke a frightening image of schizophrenia. But more often than not, that image is not accurate for many who suffer from the disorder. Charlie Chastain said most people are surprised to find out he has schizophrenia. He developed the tell-tale signs of the brain disease when he was 15. "He became paranoid, very paranoid, and believe it or not, that's a very hard thing to discover in a child," said his mother, Mary Ella Chastain. "When they start staying in their room, you don't necessarily know that they think people are outside the windows trying to get in." Chastain's parents were told to expect the worst.

Schizophrenia no one cause, no simple cure
July 27, 1998
Web posted at: 6:47 p.m. EDT (2247 GMT) From CNN Medical Correspondent Dr. Steve Salvatore NEW YORK (CNN) Schizophrenia is a rare and often misunderstood disease. It is not what many think it is split or multiple personalities. The brain disorder affects about 1 percent of the world's population, including 4 million Americans. Doctors don't know exactly what causes schizophrenia, but they believe it is a combination of biological, genetic, chemical and environmental factors. Schizophrenia strikes both men and women equally, usually starting in the late teens and early 20s. Symptoms can start and disappear quickly or gradually. The symptoms vary greatly from person to person and the disease is often linked to other problems, such as substance abuse or paranoia. Many patients have trouble distinguishing between what is real and what they perceive as reality.
