Study Reverses Scoliosis Myths
CHICAGO, Feb. 4, 2003
(CBS/AP)
Untreated patients had similar death rates and were just as functional and likely to lead productive lives 50 years after diagnosis as people with normal spines.
(AP)
Many adolescents diagnosed with spine curvatures can skip braces, surgery or other treatments without developing debilitating physical impairments later in life, a 50-year study suggests.
Previous research presented a grim prognosis and led to mandatory school screening programs in 26 states, based on the misperception that spine deformities inevitably lead to severe, even life-threatening disabilities.
Untreated patients did have more back pain and more body-image concerns than study participants with normal spines and three deaths were considered possibly linked to the deformity.
But untreated patients had similar death rates and were just as functional and likely to lead productive lives 50 years after diagnosis as people with normal spines. "The bottom line is most patients are doing very well," said lead author Dr. Stuart Weinstein, an orthopedic surgery professor at the University of Iowa.

Overview
When my doctor pointed out that I was at high risk for osteopenia because of my history of scoliosis and my thin build, I started reading everything I could about osteopenia and osteoporosis prevention and treatment. Out of the many books I looked at that are currently available on the subjects, the books reviewed below are the ones I found the most helpful. In the book Food and Our Bones the author focuses on osteoporosis, but she also also discusses bone health and bone density in general. The book Preventing and Reversing Osteoporosis is also intended for people with osteoporosis, but since it covers a variety of bone density treatment factors such as diet, exercise programs, magnesium, calcium, vitamin K, vitamin D and zinc, it should also be valuable reading for people with any bone-related health condition such as osteopenia (a precursor condition to osteoporosis), osteomalacia and rickets.

Scoliosis What is scoliosis?
A normal spine, when viewed from behind, appears straight. However, a spine affected by scoliosis shows evidence of a lateral, or sideways, curvature, and a rotation of the back bones (vertebrae), giving the appearance that the person is leaning to one side. The Scoliosis Research Society defines scoliosis as a curvature of the spine measuring 10 degrees or greater on x-ray. Scoliosis is a type of spinal deformity and should not be confused with poor posture. Four common types of curve patterns seen in scoliosis include the following:
  • thoracic - 90 percent of the curves occur on the right side. lumbar - 70 percent of the curves occur on the left side. thoracolumbar - 80 percent of the curves occur on the right side.

http://www.backtalksystems.com/05h.html
WHAT IS SCOLIOSIS? Scoliosis is a sideways curving of the spine that often gets started in childhood, when the bones of the spine are still growing. In many cases, the exact cause of scoliosis is unknown. Scoliosis is detected by uneven shoulder heights, a loss of structural balance, or a change in posture.
SCOLIOSIS IS MORE OFTEN SEEN IN GIRLS It is thought that scoliosis is the result of a hereditary problem or an adaptation to some type of trauma, such as the birth process, or an injury, such as falling off a bicycle. It usually starts with problems in the lower back. Because spinal bones continue to grow well into the early 20s, if left uncorrected, scoliosis often worsens. Unfortunately, the most common treatment approach has been to wait and see how bad it gets, resorting to unsightly braces, or eventually surgery, if it progresses too far. The chiropractic approach is to use specific spinal adjustments, often combined with corrective exercises. If detected early enough, chiropractic doctors have had excellent success with scoliosis cases. Early detection and chiropractic correction is important for optimum results. Do you know someone who could benefit from a chiropractic examination?

"I am quite worried by my oldest son...His growth is somewhat awry, in that he has one hip higher than the other and his spine is a little twisted and unduly prominent." From a letter from Marie Antoinette to her brother, the Emperor Joseph II of Austria, February 22, 1788, in Claude Manceron, The Age of the French Revolution , vol. V, The Blood of the Bastille , p. 330 Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine. There are essentially four types: Congenital scoliosis is present from birth, and involves actual malformation of the vertebrae themselves. The only remedies for it are surgical. There is nothing that massage therapy can do to change this condition, although it may be helpful in relieving muscular pain on a symptomatic basis. Scoliosis due to neuromuscular disease may be caused by polio, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, or other such pathology. Its treatment belongs to the range of treatment for those diseases, though again, massage therapy may be helpful in relieving pain. Idiopathic scoliosis Please see Scoliosis page 2 for more on this subject
NOTE: No one who has not completed skeletal growth should rely on treatment by a massage therapist for idiopathic scoliosis without at the same time being followed by a pediatrician or orthopedist. Only x-ray examination and measurements can be relied on to assess this condition accurately.

What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a complex twisting of the spine that affects the alignment of the bones from nearly every angle. While one in ten persons will have some curvature, only two or three out of a thousand persons need treatment. Some cases of scoliosis are due to an underlying muscle or nerve problem, or a defect in bone formation. Most scoliosis, however, is called "idiopathic" meaning that the cause is not known. It is known, however, that idiopathic scoliosis:
  • usually develops in young people aged ten to twelve years old;
  • has a tendency to run in families;
  • can usually be prevented from worsening in a growing adolescent by wearing a brace.
    What is a scoliosis brace?
    The brace (orthosis) is a device to hold the spine in a straighter position during the growing years. The brace is prescribed by an orthopaedic specialist and is usually worn nearly full-time until bone growth has stopped. The Boston-style brace ( photo ) is a plastic body jacket that fits snugly around the body to exert pressure on the ribs and back, pushing the spine into a straighter position. The Milwaukee-style brace (
