Scurvy Isn't Cool! All About Scurvy
  • What is scurvy?
Scurvy, also called vitamin C deficiency, is of the most serious diseases affecting teenagers today. It is caused by a dietary lack of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), a nutrient found in many fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly the citrus fruits. Ascorbic acid is important in the formation of collagen (an element of normal tissues), and any deficiency interferes with normal tissue synthesis.
How can I tell if I have scurvy?
Scurvy is characterized by swollen and bleeding gums with loosened teeth, soreness and stiffness of the joints and lower extremities, bleeding under the skin and in deep tissues, slow wound healing, and anemia. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should consult a physician immediately you may be suffering from scurvy. Here are pictures of some of the scurvy "warning signs". Gingival Hemorrhage Corkscrew Hair Periungual Hemorrhage
  • So what's so special about this ascorbic acid stuff anyway?
When collagen is made, the proline amino acids are changed to hydroxyproline, by a process called post-translational modification. An enzyme called prolyl hydroxylase catalyses this change. This enzyme requires an Fe

-Part Used- Herb.
-Habitat- Abundant on the shores in Scotland, growing inland along some of its rivers and Highland mountains and not uncommon in stony, muddy and sandy soils in England and Ireland, also in the Arctic Circle, sea-coasts of Northern and Western Europe and to high elevations in the great European mountain chains. -Description- It is a small, low-growing plant, annual or biennial, with thick, fleshy, glabrous, egg-shaped, cordate leaves (hence its name of spoonwort). The upper leaves are sessile - lower ones stalked, deltoid orbicular or reniform entire or toothed angularly. Flowers all summer in white short racemes - pods nearly globular - prominent valves of the mid-rib when dry. It has an unpleasant smell and a bitter, warm, acrid taste, very pungent when fresh. -Constituents- Leaves abound in a pungent oil containing sulphur, of the butylic series. -Medicinal Action and Uses- Formerly the fresh herb was greatly used on sea-voyages as a preventative of scurvey. It is stimulating, aperient, diuretic, antiscorbutic. The essential oil is of benefit in paralytic and rheumatic cases; scurvy-grass ale was a popular tonic drink. The infusion of 2 OZ. to a pint of boiling water is taken in frequent wineglassful doses.

GLOSSEMS:
In support of ...
BLUEPETE'S HISTORY OF NOVA SCOTIA "Scurvy" Champlain described scurvy: he had first hand knowledge of it having lost 35 of his 79 men when they stayed over for the first winter on a small island St. Croix during the winter of 1604/05: "During the winter a certain disease broke out among many of our people, called the disease of the country, otherwise the scurvy, as I have since heard learned men say. It originated in the mouth of those who have a large amount of flabby and superfluous flesh, (causing a bad putrefaction,) which increases to such an extent, that they can scarcely take any thing, unless it is almost entirely liquid. The teeth became quite loose, and they can be extracted by the fingers without causing any pain. The superfluity of this flesh requires to be cut away, and this causes a violent bleeding from the mouth. They are afterwards seized with a great pain in the legs and arms, which swell up and become very hard, all marked as if bitten by fleas, and they are unable to walk from the contraction of the nerves, so that they have no strength left, and suffer the most intolerable pain. They have also pains in the loins, the stomach and intestines, a very bad cough, and shortness of breath; in short, they are in such a state that the greater part of those seized with the complaint can neither raise nor move themselves, and if they attempt to stand erect they fall down senseless, so that of seventy-nine of us, thirty-five died, and more than twenty barely escaped death. The greater part of those unaffected with the complaint, complained of slight pains and shortness of breath. We could find no remedy to cure those attacked by the complaint, and we could not discover any cause for the disease."

Scurvy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Scurvy is a disease that results from insufficient intake of Vitamin C that leads to the formation of livid spots on the skin, spongy gums and bleeding from almost all mucous membranes . These spots are most abundant on the thighs and legs, and a person with the ailment looks pale, feels depressed and is partially immobilized. Scurvy was at one time common among sailors whose ships were out to sea longer than perishable fruits and vegetables could be stored and by soldiers who were similarly separated from these foods for extended periods. Symptoms include:
  • weakness joint pain black and blue marks on the skin gum disease corkscrew hairs
It takes about 6 months of vitamin C deprivation to begin inducing the symptoms of scurvy. Untreated scurvy is always fatal, but since all that is required for full recovery is the resumption of normal vitamin C intake death by scurvy is rare in modern times.

Scurvy does not occur in most animals because they can synthesize their own vitamin C, but humans, other primates, guinea pigs, and a few other species lack an enzyme necessary for such synthesis and must obtain vitamin C through their diet. Vitamin C is widespread in plant tissues, with particularly high concentrations occurring in citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits); tomatoes, potatoes, cabbages, and green peppers are also good sources of this vitamin.

Print this article The emergence of scurvy Scurvy did not emerge as a problem for maritime explorers until vessels started penetrating the Indian and the Pacific Oceans. Vasco da Gama lost two thirds of his crew to the disease while making his way to India in 1499. In 1520 Magellan lost more than 80 per cent while crossing the Pacific. Two voyages made by Pedro de Quiros early in the 17th century resulted in huge mortality from a sickness Sir Richard Hawkins called, after his venture into the South Seas, 'the plague of the Sea, and the Spoyle of Mariners'.
