Here is more information about scurvy than you ever wanted to know unless, like me, you are interested in life in the British navy during the Napoleanic wars: The symptoms of the disease called scurvy included gradual weakening, pale skin, sunken eyes, tender gums, muscle pain, loss of teeth, internal bleeding, and the opening of wounds such as sword cuts that had healed many years before. Exhaustion, fainting, diarrhea, and lung and kidney trouble followed. Eventually, the sailor "went to Davy Jones's locker" (naval slang for dying). Illustration from

http://www.thedoctorsdoctor.com/diseases/scurvy.htm
Background Scurvy is Vitamin C deficiency. It occupies an interesting place in the history of the world when English sailors became progressively ill after long voyages at sea. It was only with the observation that the consumption of fruit helped to ward off the devastating effects of scurvy did the sailors begin to transport limes with them. Hence, the term Limeys came to refer to English sailors. Scurvy results because humans cannot synthesize vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in our bodies. We lack the enzyme L-gluconolactone which converts L-gluconogammalactone to L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Curiously, guinea pigs are the only other mammal lacking this enzyme. Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis. Any deficiency will affect any organ or structure that requires collagen. Patients may present with hyperkeratotic papules centered in follicles. Hair may grow in a corkscrew-like pattern and may be associated with hemorrhage, often with minor trauma. In chronic disease, ecchymoses, usually over pressure points such as the shins, may occur. The mouth may show gingival hypertrophy. Hemorrhage may occur in any mucosal surface including conjunctiva, subungua, and skin. In addition, hemorrhage in the skeletal muscle, intra-articular sites, and subperiosteal region of the epiphyses of the long bones may occur. SYNONYMS Vitamin C deficiency INCIDENCE Rare, usually in poverty stricken areas

Avast, ye scurvy dogs
August 22, 2000 I just secured a place in Seattle, in a pumpkin colored house filled with punk rockers called, appropriately enough, the Punkin' House. This takes a load and a half off my mind because now I won't have to be homeless in Seattle, which was looking like a very real possibility. I've got a job, I've got my plane tickets, I've cancelled my utilities, dealt with my landlord, dealt with my work, and moved most of the small stuff into storage at my folx house. All I have to do now is put up "free furniture" signs around town for the crap I want to get rid of and rent a U-HAUL this weekend for the crap I want to keep. Now my mind is moving forward, thinking about how much fun I will have in Seattle, thinking about what kinds of projects I want to work on. I talked to one of the guys at the house about Halloween and possibly doing some sort of haunted house or Halloween event. He seemed into the idea. That made me happy. As happens every fall, I start out thinking, "this year I'm going as a pirate." Usually I end up throwing a crappy costume together at the last minute. One year I went in my bathrobe with a cup of coffee. Another year I went as a redneck, at the last minute throwing on a rebel flag t-shirt, jeans, and a flannel shirt. Last year Scott, Erica and I went as fight club. This year I'm going as a pirate, dammit.

on an ice maker for the rich you know that line along the circumference of ruber bouncing balls? I think it exists because they use a cast divided in two sections, the top half-sphere, and the bottom. The two cast sections are placed together, and the molten(?) rubber is inserted through a small hole. Once the rubber has cooled, the molds are seperated and the finished product bounces out.
why not use a similar method for ice making, only before inserting the water, spray a layer of edible nonstick film on the inside of the mold. Once the ice spheres are released, they won't stick to each other, making dispensing very quick.

B-Spline Curve Visualization
by Apostolos Lerios
scurvy is a simple program that allows the user to visualize and manipulate B-spline curves in space. It was written as a teaching aid for Stanford's 1995 course in modeling in computer graphics (CS 348C) The provided executable executes only on Silicon Graphics workstations equipped with the execution-only-environment (eoe) of Open Inventor (the development environment is not required). For those interested in porting scurvy to other platforms, the source code is also available in tar archive format; use tar xf scurvy.tar to unpack the archive. This source code was developed on a Silicon Graphics workstation equipped with the Open Inventor development environment. A Linux port bleffler@kth.se We provide no support for scurvy
Basic interaction
A typical screen of scurvy shows a B-spline curve. The curve is drawn in two colors, cyan and orange: these two colors alternate between adjacent spline segments. Each spline segment is drawn by approximating the shape of the ideal curve by as many line segments as specified by the "Pieces" slider. The colored spheres mark the de Boor points of the curve. The color of the spheres indicates the order of the de Boor points: the first point is blue, and the last is red, while intermediate ones have colors in-between blue and red. The white polyline connecting the spheres is the control polygon of the curve; along with the spheres' coloring, it identifies the ordering of the de Boor points.

Scurvy: Scourge of the Voyagers
Mariners have always been confronted by risks and hazards disaster could come from uncharted reefs, fire on board, or shifts in the wind. In the 15th century, long-distance sea voyages introduced a new set of dangers. So long as seafaring had been limited to short-distance voyages, the quality of shipboard provisions mattered little, but once mariners undertook voyages that lasted months at a time, problems arose from poorly preserved food and from diets that lacked essential vitamins. As a result, thousands of seafarers died before these problems were solved. Shipboard diet was invariably boring hardtack, salt meats, dried peas, dried fish, butter, cheese and fresh water or beer were typical staples but mariners generally received sufficient food to meet their daily caloric requirements. The problem was not the quantity of food but its quality. Shipboard provisions were preserved by being salted, pickled, dried or smoked, but even these methods could not prevent food from spoiling over time. This, combined with poor hygiene and sanitation, crowded shipboard conditions, and vermin, meant that sailors often fell victim to diseases like the "bloody fluxe" (dysentery), "ship fever" (typhus, spread by lice), and typhoid. No one understood the micro-organisms that caused these diseases, but sailors had no difficulty blaming meat that was putrefying, water that stank with algae, and biscuit infested with weevils. The quality of food was a common source of complaint among mariners through the ages.

by NFPT Research Group If you do know what Scurvy is, you also are probably aware that the disease is practically nonexistent at present. There are, however, third world countries made up in part by nutritionally deprived populations who do still suffer from scurvy among other raging nutrient deficiency related diseases. In the early days of British naval activity, over 20,000 British sailors, while on long voyages, died from Scurvy. It was finally determined that these deaths could easily be avoided by sailors simply eating an orange, lemon, or some other fruit source of vitamin C from time to time. Prolonged vitamin C deficiency results in the gradual breakdown of cardiovascular tissue causing blood leakage from vessels in the cardiovascular system. In serious cases, without immediate nutrition therapy, death results as reflected above. The True Cause of Cardiovascular Disease?

scurvy scurvy, deficiency disorder resulting from a lack of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in the diet. Scurvy does not occur in most animals because they can synthesize their own vitamin C, but humans, other primates, guinea pigs, and a few other species lack an enzyme necessary for such synthesis and must obtain vitamin C through their diet. Vitamin C is widespread in plant tissues, with particularly high concentrations occurring in citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits); tomatoes, potatoes, cabbages, and green peppers are also good sources of this vitamin. Scurvy results in the weakening of capillaries, which causes hemorrhages into the tissues, bleeding of the gums, loosening of the teeth, anemia, and general debility. In infants there is also interference with bone development. Severe phases of the disorder can result in death. Scurvy is treated with large doses of vitamin C. Modern methods of transporting and preserving foods have made a diet rich in vitamin C available everywhere throughout the year, and even infants' diets include orange juice. Vitamin C is also available in tablet or syrup form. limeys for British sailors), a measure that was largely successful in preventing scurvy. It was probably the first disease to be definitely associated with a dietary deficiency.

Definition
Scurvy is a condition caused by a lack of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in the diet. Signs of scurvy include tiredness, muscle weakness, joint and muscle aches, a rash on the legs, and bleeding gums. In the past, scurvy was common among sailors and other people deprived of fresh fruits and vegetables for long periods of time.
Description
Scurvy is very rare in countries where fresh fruits and vegetables are readily available and where processed foods have vitamin C added. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant vitamin involved in the development of connective tissues, lipid and vitamin metabolism, biosynthesis of neurotransmitters, immune function, and wound healing. It is found in fruits, especially citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruit, and in green leafy vegetables like broccoli and spinach. In adults, it may take several months of vitamin C deficiency before symptoms of scurvy develop. Currently, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamin C is 50-60 mg/day for adults; 35 mg/day for infants; 40-45 mg/day for children 1-14; 70 mg/day during pregnancy ; and 90-95 mg/day during lactation . The body's need for vitamin C increases when a person is under stress smoking , or taking certain medications.

Symptoms of scurvy:

Vitamin C. Minimun 10 mg/kg. At least every three days. Recovery within less than a week. Why?
Guinea pigs, like humans, can't synthetizise their own vitamin C, and if vitamin C is not included in the normal diet the guinea pig will get scurvy. Scurvy is quite ususual today.
Since the information that guinea pigs need vitamin C in their daily diet is well known, many people try to make a profit from this by producing guinea pig food with vitamin C added to it. Some even say that guinea pigs need to get this food or they may die from scurvy. Beware that they just want your money! This causes an other problem, called Pseudo Scurvy , in the guinea pig. How to keep your guinea pigs healthy:
The best way to ensure that your guinea pigs get enough vitamin C is to give lots of fresh vegetables daily. Where I live, in Sweden, even breeders with over 100 guinea pigs gives fresh vegetables or grass daily.
The needs of vitamin C is not high, only 10 mg/kg for a healthy guinea pig, given at least

Pseudo Scurvy
What is pseudo scurvy?
Pseudo scurvy is a condition in the guinea pig that is not that common, and seldom told about. But it is known and studied. If you give your guinea pig too much vitamin C and then returns to normal levels of vitamin C your guinea pig may show symptoms of pseudo scurvy within 2 weeks. The symptoms are exactly like in Scurvy How come?
Since the need for vitamin C in the guinea pig is quite low, and it is so easy to add a lot of extra vitamin C in the water or in the food, it is easy to give too much vitamin C. A little too much will just be flushed out via the urine, no harm done. But the needs of the guinea pig is low and if the guinea pig as much as 10 times too much, which is easy to administer, then the guinea pig may get the conditon called pseudo scurvy. What happens is that the normal mechanism in the guinea pig for absorbing vitamin C atrophies, and when the guinea pig does get back to normal amounts of vitamin C again the guinea pig can't absorb enough vitamin C and develops symptoms of scurvy. My advice is:
You should never give to your guinea pig much higher amounts of vitamin C than necessary, and
