*For Medical Professionals only, registration required Scurvy, metabolic disease due to vitamin C deficiency. It is now exceedingly rare and almost never seen below the age of 6 months. Vitamin C has an important role in the synthesis of collagen and manifestations of the disease reflect deficient collagen; thus blood vessels are excessively permeable and rupture easily and the bone shows defective formation and lacks tensile strength. Clinically children with scurvy appear malnourished and irritable with generalized weakness, petechial haemorrhages and bruising, poor wound healing and tender, painful extremities. Radiographs show generalized osteopenia, loss of the normal trabecular pattern and thin cortices ( Fig.1

*For Medical Professionals only, registration required Scurvy, a metabolic disease resulting from chronic dietary deficiency of vitamin C or ascorbic acid. In infants scurvy may develop if they are fed pasteurized or boiled milk over a long period of time (heating leads to disruption of the vitamin C molecule). Vitamin deficiency must have existed for 4–10 months before scurvy develops. Manifestations include failure to thrive, pale skin, petechiae, swollen and ulcerated gums, haematuria, melaena, haematemesis, secondary infections, soft tissue swelling and costochondral tenderness. The skeletal changes result from a depression of normal cellular activity, most markedly in areas of active endochondral bone growth (ends of tubular bones and costochondral junctions). Small excrescences may develop at the metaphysis. On radiographs, the end of an involved tubular bone shows several zones (Table 1) (

Scurvy
Definition
Scurvy is a condition caused by a lack of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in the diet. Signs of scurvy include tiredness, muscle weakness, joint and muscle aches, a rash on the legs, and bleeding gums. In the past, scurvy was common among sailors and other people deprived of fresh fruits and vegetables for long periods of time.
Description
Scurvy is very rare in countries where fresh fruits and vegetables are readily available and where processed foods have vitamin C added. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant vitamin involved in the development of connective tissues, lipid and vitamin metabolism, biosynthesis of neurotransmitters, immune function, and wound healing. It is found in fruits, especially citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruit, and in green leafy vegetables like broccoli and spinach. In adults, it may take several months of vitamin C deficiency before symptoms of scurvy develop. Currently, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamin C is 50-60 mg/day for adults; 35 mg/day for infants; 40-45 mg/day for children 1-14; 70 mg/day during

69. How The Vitamins For Preventing Scurvy, Beriberi, And Pellagra Were Discovered.
A story of a scurvy sailor who ate grass, and lived Scottish surgeon Dr. JamesLind. Did the grass contain something? The Dreaded scurvy Infection .
http://www.luminet.net/~wenonah/new/howfindv.htm
How Vitamins were Discovered
H O H NO The Dreaded "Scurvy Infection".
The sailor's legs were so swollen that the man could not walk. His captain, hoping to stop the spread of the dreaded "scurvy infection," put the man ashore on a desolate Atlantic island. The poor wretch was bound to die, the captain felt, but perhaps the rest of the crew could thus be saved. The story of the sailor who "ate grass, like a beast and lived" was of great interest to a Scottish surgeon Dr. James Lind. Having been with the British fleet, he was aware of the thousands of seamen who died yearly with scurvy. Lind's question was, Did the grass contain something that the man's normal diet did not? Was there a connection between scurvy and diet? Deciding to experiment, Lind became responsible for an important chapter in the story of "how they found your vitamins." Not that Dr. Lind was looking for a vitamin. The word was unheard of before 1911. The discovery of most vitamins was really accidental in that the researchers were attacking specific diseases, not studying foods or nutrition. Further, this story has no one hero, but involves the efforts of men from many countries. These pioneers frequently did not benefit from one another's discoveries, as they lacked the benefits of modern communications. Yet, sometimes, despite the scorn of contemporary doctors and scientists, the efforts of these men constitute a story of courage, perseverance and eventual success.

I read about Tara Ariano's (a.k.a. Wing Chun) website , "The Farmer's Almanac of Celebrity Worth," in the current issue of Bitch magazine. The website is pretty funny if you're like me and have a love/hate relationship with pop culture. Here's what they had to say about Gary Oldman, who I happen to think is a god. (C'mon, how could you not? Sid and Nancy True Romance
"So, Oldman is a whore. On this we can probably all agree. One does not contract to play Arthur Dimmesdale to Demi Moore's Hester Prynne without spending a little time on Hollywood's street corner. But the thing about whores is that they do come across. Does Oldman always turn up in respected films you are anxious to see? Clearly not. But when you happen to see one of those shitty movies on an airplane, there is no denying that Gary Oldman is probably the only thing that makes it watchable. The claims that he's among the greatest actors of his generation are not unwarranted."

Scurvy does not occur in most animals because they can synthesize their own vitamin C, but humans, other primates, guinea pigs, and a few other species lack an enzyme necessary for such synthesis and must obtain vitamin C through their diet. Vitamin C is widespread in plant tissues, with particularly high concentrations occurring in citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits); tomatoes, potatoes, cabbages, and green peppers are also good sources of this vitamin. Scurvy results in the weakening of capillaries, which causes hemorrhages into the tissues, bleeding of the gums, loosening of the teeth, anemia, and general debility. In infants there is also interference with bone development. Severe phases of the disorder can result in death. Scurvy is treated with large doses of vitamin C. Modern methods of transporting and preserving foods have made a diet rich in vitamin C available everywhere throughout the year, and even infants' diets include orange juice. Vitamin C is also available in tablet or syrup form.

Related Entries Scurvy is the name traditionally given to vitamin C deficiency Details Scurvy is characterized by general weekness, anemia, gum disease (gingivitis) and skin hemorrhages result from a lack of vitamin C. In advanced economies, scurvy is now most frequently seen in older, malnourished adults. The literature of voyaging abounds with detailed and terrifying descriptions of scurvy such as that penned by William Clowes, in his Profitable and Necessary Book of Observations (1596). In the eighteenth century, scurvy was understood in terms of the theories of the bodily economy propounded by Hermann Boerhaave (1668-1738). In line with Boerhaave's mechanical model of the body, scurvy was seen as being due to blood serum being too thin and acrid - this state being caused by damp and cold climate and foul vapours. In the eighteenth century, the term scurvy was often used to describe other nutritional deficiencies, such as beri-beri, in which patients manifested similar symptoms. The imprecision in diagnosis was observed by eighteenth-century surgeon and medical theorist, James Lind. Traditionally, Europeans had cultivated plants of the Cruciferea or Brassicaceae (mustards). Three plants were especially as anti-scorbutics:

The following quoted excerpts from the Software Toolworks Multimedia Encyclopedia regarding scurvy illustrate how fast man reacted to the first recognized nutritional deficiency disease. From our perspective today we can only assume that folks of that era must of been very ignorant. But actually they were no different than folks are today in what we call the “Information Age.” The modern-day fatty acid imbalance of the American diet is a nutritional deficiency disease that will go down in history as one of the worst (most costly) known to man. Some American beef producers want to do something about it. But even after informing the grocery industry's meat buyers about the health problems with grain-fed beef, they say they are "not interested." They say they “don't want to mess with it.” They have “too many other meat programs.” They just “don't have the real estate” to display it. You be the judge. What kind of people would knowingly sell you a defective product?

Among the most original modern Russian sculptors is Naoum Aronson (b. 1872), whose best-known work is his Beethoven monument at Bonn. At Godesberg is his Narcissus fountain, whilst other works of his are at the Berlin, St Petersburg and Dublin Museums. (M. H. S.; P. G. K.) American sculpture, like American painting, was awakened by French example. The leading spirit in the new movement was Augustus St Gaudens (q.v.), a great sculptor whose work is sufficiently dealt with in the separate article devoted to him. Two other Americans stand out, with St Gaudens, among their contemporaries, Daniel Chester French (q.v) and Frederick Macmonnies (q.v.). French’s “Gallaudet teaching a Deaf Mute” is an example of how a difficult subject can be turned into a triumph of grace. His “Death and the Young Sculptor” is a singularly beautiful rendering of the idea of the intervention of death. In collabora-’ tion with E. C. Potter he modelled various important groups
