What are the symtoms and what causes Seasonal Affective Disorder?
Many sufferers report fatigue, exhaustion, depression, sleep problems, inability to concentrate, lack of energy, alertness and interest. Most scientists believe that Seasonal Affective Disorder is a result of shifted circadian rhythms. Studies show that about 7 percent of us need a very strong stimulus of morning light (like sunlight) to reset our circadian rhythms every day. In the winter we don't receive this strong light signal, and our internal "body clock" shifts, producing the wrong hormones at the wrong time of day. As the season wears on, this hormonal imbalance can grow.
If you notice the same pattern yearly, see your doctor because you may have Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Seasonal Affective Disorder. Author/s: Issue: March 1, 2000 What is seasonal affective disorder? Seasonal affective disorder (also called SAD) is a kind of depression that follows the seasons. The most common type of SAD is called winter depression. It usually begins in late fall or early winter and goes away by summer. A less common type of SAD, known as summer depression, begins in the late spring or early summer. SAD may be related to changes in the amount of daylight we get. Do many people get SAD?

SAD, the Discontent of Our Winter
How to Beat Seasonal Affective Disorder Sadness. It's a dark, gloomy sea of gray this winter's dayagain. And you're wondering why you're too depressed to sing the blues? Perhaps it's the end of the holiday season. Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year's. All gone but the bills. Yet, it seems like we've been off our energy peaks for months. Oh, it's true. There really is something to the winter doldrums. But surprisingly it has little to do with the cold, the dampness, the end of the festivities, or even that eye-popping credit card bill. It has everything to do with solar energy. If someone tells you to "lighten up" in the midst of the gloom, it's probably good advice. But how? The SAD Truth of the Matter
Poets and writers have clued us into the idea that something is different and downcast about the late fall and wintertime. The trees are barren, the landscape is uniformly drab, the clouds are thick and the air chills you to the bone. What they may have glossed over is the diminishing light and how dramatically that can affect the way people feel, regardless of whether it is hot or cold or what the foliage is doing. A South African doctor, Norman E. Rosenthal, started making the connection between moods and the seasons in the mid 1970's and even considered writing a novel that would emphasize the changing moods of his character as the seasons transitioned. But when he moved to New York in 1979, he really got a shock. The shortness of the winter days compared to those in South Africa had a profound effect on his energy levels, which didn't abate until spring. Dr. Rosenthal took a research fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health to study how brain chemistry varied with moods. The research was showing that bright light affected the chemistry of the brain, particularly the secretion of melatonin at night. Changing brain chemistry translated into physical symptoms that affected mood, appetite, ability to sleep, and even sociability.

    Part 3: Disorders Beyond SAD

By Dr. Michael Terman and Jamie Rifkin
November 21, 2000 While we try to make the season bright by dressing trees with strings of lights and by lighting dancing candles, outside it's getting darker and darker. At the winter solstice, just three weeks away, sunlight in the Northern Hemisphere is the shortest and dimmest of the year. The next few months will remain dark even as daylight begins to increase. The phenomenon is especially obvious for people who wake up before sunrise in winter and leave work after sunset. Although light deprivation and winter weather may cause a lot of griping, there are some people whose complaints should be taken very seriously by their families, coworkers, health care providers and, indeed, themselves.
