Seborrheic dermatitis is a common, chronic condition that occurs in areas of the skin where there are large oil glands — the middle of the face, behind the ears, and especially on the scalp (dandruff). The condition is characterized by waxy scale and reddened skin areas. It affects approximately 3% to 5% of the population, most commonly men, and peaks in infancy and middle age. Causes Despite many attempts, researchers have been unable to identify a precise cause of seborrheic dermatitis. The most popular theory is that it is caused by a sensitivity to yeast on the skin, although research data is inconclusive; however, people with the condition often respond to antifungal medications. Certain drugs (e.g., methyldopa, cimetidine [Tagamet®], antiseizure medications) can aggravate seborrheic dermatitis. Up to 85% of the people infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have seborrheic dermatitis, and as their immunity wanes, the eruptions become more severe.

Seborrheic Dermatitis: What It Is and How to Treat It What is seborrheic dermatitis?
Seborrheic dermatitis is a disease that causes flaking of the skin. It usually affects the scalp. In adolescents and adults, it is commonly called "dandruff." In babies, it is known as "cradle cap." Seborrheic dermatitis can also affect the skin on other parts of the body, such as the face and chest, and the creases of the arms, legs and groin. Seborrheic dermatitis usually causes the skin to look a little greasy and scaly or flaky. How common is it? Seborrheic dermatitis most often occurs in babies younger than 3 months of age and in adults from 30 to 60 years of age. In adults, it's more common in men than in women. What causes seborrheic dermatitis? The exact cause isn't known. The cause may be different in infants and adults. Seborrheic dermatitis may be related to hormones, because the disorder often appears in infancy and disappears before puberty. Or the cause might be a fungus, called Pityrosporum ovale. This organism is normally present on the skin in small numbers, but sometimes its numbers increase, resulting in skin problems. Seborrheic dermatitis has also been linked to neurologic disorders such as Parkinson's disease and epilepsy. The reason for this relationship isn't known.

Seborrheic Dermatitis Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin disorder that can be easily treated. What is Seborrheic Dermatitis?
This condition is a red, scaly, itchy rash in areas various locations on the body. The scalp, sides of the nose, eyebrows, eyelids, and the skin behind the ears and middle of the chest are the most common sites. Other areas, such as the navel (belly button) and skin folds under the arms, breasts, groin and buttocks, may also be involved. These areas have the highest concentration of sebaceous glands. Are Dandruff, Seborrhea and Seborrheic Dermatitis the Same?
Dandruff appears as scaling on the scalp without redness. Seborrhea is oiliness of the skin, especially of the scalp and face, without redness or scaling. Patients with seborrhea may later get seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis has both redness and scaling. Who Gets Seborrheic Dermatitis?
This condition is most common in three age groups — infancy when it’s called "cradle cap," middle age, and the elderly. Cradle cap usually clears without treatment by age 8 to 12 months. This may be due to the gradual disappearance of hormones passed from the mother to the child before birth. In some infants, seborrheic dermatitis may develop only in the diaper area where it could be confused with other forms of diaper rash. When seborrheic dermatitis develops at other ages it can come and go.

Seborrheic Dermatitis
An inflammatory scaling disease of the scalp, face, and occasionally other areas. Despite the name, the composition and flow of sebum are usually normal. The disorder affects areas with high densities of large oil glands. Inflammation is caused by the body's reaction to Pityrosporum yeasts and to products that break down oil.
Symptoms and Signs
Symptoms develop gradually, and the dermatitis usually is apparent only as dry or greasy diffuse scaling of the scalp (dandruff) with variable pruritus. In severe disease, yellow-red scaling papules appear along the hairline, behind the ears, in the external auditory canals, on the eyebrows, on the bridge of the nose, in the nasolabial folds (see Plate 111-2 ), and over the sternum. Marginal blepharitis with dry yellow crusts and conjunctival irritation may be present. Seborrheic dermatitis does not cause hair loss. Newborns may develop seborrheic dermatitis, with a thick, yellow, crusted scalp lesion

seborrheic dermatitis By Lynn West, MD Seborrheric dermatitis is a chronic, inflamed redness and scaling of the skin. It can involve the scalp and face. When this condition occurs in infants, it is sometimes called cradle cap. In adults, seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp is called dandruff. What is going on in the body? The cause of seborrheic dermatitis is not known. The skin of the scalp, and sometimes the face, becomes inflammed and flakes off. What are the signs and symptoms of the condition? The skin changes seen in seborrheic dermatitis usually occur on the scalp and the face. The eyebrows, the skin folds from the side of the nose down to the corner of the mouth, and the ear canals are common sites on the face. Symptoms may include: red scalp and face greasy white scales and sticky crusts circular plaques with thick scales, particularly on the scalp itching What are the causes and risks of the condition? The cause of seborrheic dermatitis is unknown. It tends to run in families. Some individuals have an overgrowth of yeast organisms that is linked with this condition. Those with neurologic disorders, immunodeficiency disorders such as HIV , and extended hospital stays can have severe cases of seborrheic dermatitis.

Skin Cancer Updates
Mature Skin As we grow older, we see and feel certain changes in our skin, which is the body's largest and most visible organ. The skin becomes drier, more wrinkled, and spots and growths appear. Also, after an injury our skin tends to heal more slowly. Some of these skin changes are natural, unavoidable, and harmless. Others are itchy or painful, and some changes, such as skin cancers, are serious and require medical attention. Many of these skin problems can be prevented. Whether a danger to health or merely cosmetically unattractive, most of these skin problems can be addressed by therapies now available. Wrinkles
As skin ages, collagen and elastin, fibers that keep the skin firm, weaken. The skin looks loose and lax, becomes thinner, and loses fat, so that it looks less plump and smooth. While all these changes are taking place, gravity is also at work, pulling at the skin and causing it to sag. Can Wrinkles Be Avoided?

The terms eczema and dermatitis describe a reaction pattern of skin disorders with a variety of common characteristics. The acute disease typically is characterized by inflammation, redness, swelling, and itching, as well as some blistering and oozing. Skin biopsies show inflammatory cells and swelling. When dermatitis becomes subacute, the intense reaction becomes milder, and the blisters begin to heal. Crusts and scale are common at this time. Chronic dermatitis is identified by thickened, leathery skin with excess ridges, as well as dark and dull skin. Under the microscope, the outermost (epidermal) skin layer is seen to proliferate and become elongated. There is a wide range of dermatitis types:
  • Atopic dermatitis is an inherited condition characterized by dry, sensitive, itchy skin. Infants and children are most affected, and the disorder can continue into adulthood.

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis
Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a common, harmless, scaling rash affecting the face, scalp and other areas. Dandruff (also called pityriasis capitis ) is seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp. Seborrhoeic dermatitis may also occur on the eyebrows, eye lid edges, ears, the skin near the nose and skin-folds of the armpits and groin. Sometimes seborrhoeic dermatitis produces round, scaling patches on the middle of the chest or on the back.
Seborrhoeic dermatitis in armpit
Seborrhoeic dermatitis on scalp
Seborrhoeic dermatitis on nasolabial fold Cause Seborrhoeic dermatitis is believed to be related to a proliferation of a normal skin inhabitant, a yeast called Pityrosporum ovale (also known as Malassezia ). Patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis appear to have a reduced resistance to the yeast. It is not contagious or related to diet, but it may be aggravated by illness, psychological stress, fatigue, change of season and reduced general health. Those with neurological disorders including Parkinson's disease and stroke are particularly prone to it. Seborrhoeic dermatitis may appear at any age after puberty. It fluctuates in severity and may persit for years. It may predispose to

About Seborrheic Dermatitis

Karen is a young mother with a one month-old baby. She’s concerned about a yellowish crust on her baby’s head. Will shampooing remove the scales? Will it affect his "soft spot" in any way? Is his skin condition contagious? Who Can Get Seborrheic Dermatitis?
As with other types of eczema, anyone at any age can develop SD. It is most common in infants and among adults age 30 and older.
Despite the differences in age and circumstances, what all these people have in common is a skin condition called seborrheic (seb-oh-REE-ick) dermatitis (SD). SD is one of the most common skin disorders. It can be stubborn, persistent and lingering, causing embarrassment and discomfort. The cause of SD is unknown but while there is no cure, it can be treated and controlled.
What is Seborrheic Dermatitis
SD is a non-contagious condition that causes flaking and redness of the skin. It occurs when there is inflammation in areas of the skin where sebaceous (skin oil) glands are concentrated. It usually affects the scalp, but can also affect other parts of the body, such as the central face and chest, eyebrows, eyelids, the folds of the nose, behind or inside the ears, the forehead and the chin. Sometimes patches can appear around the navel, in the skin folds under the arms, in the groin, or under the breasts. In babies it’s known as "cradle cap." SD can be unpleasant and uncomfortable, and is usually unattractive. It can disappear spontaneously and suddenly reappear, for no known reason. Or it can stubbornly linger, resisting treatment. But as frustrating as SD can be, it is readily diagnosed and is treatable.

Atopic Dermatitis
Chronic, pruritic, superficial inflammation of the skin, frequently associated with a personal or family history of allergic disorders (eg, hay fever, asthma).
Etiology
Susceptibility is genetic, but the disorder is triggered by various environmental agents and factors. Numerous inhalants and foods produce wheal and flare reactions on scratch or intradermal tests, but these reactions are usually not relevant; elimination does not usually cause remission, except sometimes in young patients. Patients with atopic dermatitis usually have high serum levels of reaginic (IgE) antibodies, peripheral eosinophilia, and high levels of cAMP phosphodiesterase in their WBCs, but the etiologic significance of these findings is unknown.
Symptoms, Signs, and Course
Atopic dermatitis may begin in the first few months of life, with red, weeping, crusted lesions on the face, scalp, diaper area, and extremities. In older children or adults, it may be more localized and chronic, typically appearing as erythema and lichenification in the antecubital and popliteal fossae and on the eyelids, neck, and wrists. The course is unpredictable. Although the dermatitis often improves by age 3 or 4 yr, exacerbations are common during childhood, adolescence, or adulthood.

Cause of Seborrhea Seborrhea is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that affects the areas of the head and trunk that have sebaceous glands. A type of yeast that has an affinity for these glands called Pityrosporum ovale may be the cause, but this has not been proven yet. It is believed that the build-up of yeast in these glands irritates the skin causing redness and flaking.

Dermatitis (or eczema) is an inflammation of the skin . It is typically characterized by redness, itching, swelling and blistering. Crusts and scales may form during the healing process. Chronically, the outermost skin layer may appear thickened and the skin may take on a leathery appearance. There are multiple forms of dermatitis, the most common being atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis.
Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic is a word that is used to describe an allergic condition . Allergic conditions involve activation of cells of the immune system whose job is to protect against invaders. Sometimes they overact or act inappropriately and cause the manifestation of a disease or condition such as atopic dermatitis.
Atopic dermatitis affects approximately 10 percent of children. There are often periods during which the symptoms improve. A spontaneous resolution occurs in about 80-90% of cases. However, in a small percentage of people the symptoms continue into adulthood. These people frequently develop contact dermatitis from occupational or domestic exposure to various substances.
In atopic dermatitis the hypersensitivity or allergic reaction that occurs in the skin, causes chronic inflammation. The inflammation leads to dry, scaly and sensitive skin. There may also be rashes and blisters that itch quite intensely. People who have atopic dermatitis are more sensitive to itch. Persistent scratching often results in wounds that can become infected with

Dandruff Minoxidil Finasteride Dandruff/Seborrheic Dermatitis Dandruff (pityriasis capitis) occurs when the scalp sheds larger than normal amounts of dead epidermal cells. It is sometimes associated with seborrhea where sebum production is excessive. Dandruff shares some features with seborrheic dermatitis , and both conditions are frequently treated with common topical medications. Seborrheic dermatitis generally affects body sites in addition to the scalp, including the forehead, nasolabial fold, eyelash and eyebrow regions, and the outer ear. The peak incidence and severity of dandruff occurs at approximately 20 years of age. Dandruff appears on the scalp as small white or gray scales. In the presence of seborrhea, the scales may appear greasy and yellow in color. The greasy scales combine with exudates to form crusts, beneath which the scalp is red and moist. Shampooing removes the scales temporarily, however they return within several days.

What Is Seborrheic Dermatitis? Seborrheic dermatitis is a noncontagious inflammation of the upper layers of the skin. Most common in infants younger than three months and among adults ages 30 and older, seborrheic dermatitis is slightly more common in men than in women. Symptoms include red, itchy, inflamed skin covered by scales that may appear white, yellowish or gray. When skin starts reproducing itself faster than normal, the extra skin cells build up and flakes (dandruff) appear. This condition often appears on the scalp, near the nose and eyebrows, and around the ears, breastbone, groin and armpits.

Seborrheic Dermatitis, Nummular Eczema and Other Types of Eczema
Eczema can be so mild no one notices it, or so severe that the skin becomes leathery from repeated rubbing and scratching. It can cause visible rashes and inflammation anywhere on the skin, but certain types are associated more frequently with specific skin areas. The more common types and their symptoms are listed below.
Asteatotic Eczema
Asteatotic eczema most commonly occurs on the shins of the elderly, although it occasionally develops on the hands or body trunk. Symptoms include dry, cracked skin that develops fissures: skin affected by asteatoic eczema has been described as "cracked porcelain," or "a dry riverbed." If the cracks deepen enough, bleeding may occur.
Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis is perhaps the most common type. It causes an itchy rash that is often dry in appearance. The skin may thicken and appear leathery if the rash is constantly scratched. The rash may appear anywhere on the skin, including the hands, feet, ankles, neck and face. The creases of the knees and elbows may also become inflamed.
Atopic dermatitis occurs more often in children than adults, and often presents in combination with asthma. It has been dubbed the "itch that rashes," because rubbing and scratching the itchy skin brings about the appearance of the rash, rather than the other way around.
