Self Injury and Eating Disorders
I have put this page on my site as it deals with the subject of self harm and eating disorders. These are some what tabooed topics and the more awareness there is the better. For those of you who read this and know about self harm/injury please make sure you are safe as reading this may be triggering.
"Self-injury is used to help the individual cope, the act of injuring oneself is also used to help cope with, block out, and release built up feelings and emotions. Self-injury is probably the most widely misunderstood forms of self harm and there are many myths associated with it, which can make it difficult for people to reach out and ask for help. Self-injury (self-harm, self-mutilation) can be defined as the attempt to deliberately cause harm to one's own body and the injury is usually severe enough to cause tissue damage. This is not a conscious attempt at suicide, though some people may see it that way. It has been reported that many people who self-injure have a history of sexual or physical abuse, but that is not always the case. Some may come from broken homes, alcoholic homes, have emotionally absent parents, etc. There are many factors that could cause someone to self-injure as a way to cope. There are three types of self-injury. The rarest and most extreme form is Major self-mutilation. This form usually results in permanent disfigurement, i.e. castration or limb amputation. Another form is Stereo typic self-mutilation which usually consists of head banging, eyeball pressing and biting. The third and most common form is Superficial self-mutilation which usually involves cutting, burning, hair-pulling, bone breaking, hitting, interference with wound healing and basically any method used to harm oneself.

Self Injury
Self mutilation also known as self-injury, skin cutting, parasuicide or 'trauma reenactment syndrome', has remained one of the most hidden aspects of many survivors' lives and one of the least understood effects of trauma. It may involve cutting, burning, bone breaking, hitting, head banging, hair pulling or any other temporary or permanent injury that causes pain or marking. Persons who exhibit this type of behavior may prefer the term 'sib', short for 'self injurious behavior'. A large percentage of child sexual abuse victims use this coping mechanism, however, not all persons who SI were abused. One of the most difficult aspects of SI to deal with is health professional's not understanding the underlying causes. You and I SI to help cope with pain that would otherwise be unbearable. Many, but not all, health professionals see SI as 'attention getting', but we don't SI to get attention. What to do? SI is usually a form of control. We do it do demonstrate, to ourselves, that we have control over ourselves. Sometimes the sight of our blood 'brings us back'. Sometimes we SI and need professional treatment (stitches, etc). Did you cut too deep? When that happens it's difficult to find someone who will treat the immediate injury without judging you. They shunt you off to the 'crazy section'. They think you are trying to kill yourself or are trying to 'get attention', and neither of these things could be further from the truth.

Because I Hurt
A new book by Jan Sutton of SIARI and Deb Martinson, author of this site, coming in Autumn 2003. More here.
Introduction
In spite of the title, there is no shame here. If you cause physical harm to your body in order to deal with overwhelming feelings, know that you have nothing to be ashamed of. It's likely that you're keeping yourself alive and maintaining psychological integrity with the only tool you have right now. It's a crude and ultimately self-destructive tool, but it works; you get relief from the overwhelming pain/fear/anxiety in your life. The prospect of giving it up may be unthinkable, which makes sense; you may not realize that self-harm isn't the only or even best coping method around. For many people who self-injure, though, there comes a breakthrough moment when they realize that change is possible, that they can escape, that things can be different. They begin to believe that other tools do exist and begin figuring out which of these non-self-destructive ways of coping work for them. This site exists to help you come closer to that moment.

Many famous stars have come out with their stories of self-injury, some have recovered, some have not. Even though they are scrutinized by the media, they have had the courage to reveal their struggles. Below is a brief description of each celebrity, and a bit about their self-injury.
Note: This is NOT meant as an "idolization" of these celebrities. I neither condemn nor condone their actions.
Fiona Apple
Fiona Apple, famous singer/songwriter, was raped outside of her mother's apartment at the age of twelve. For years after her rape she would check her closets to make sure no one was hiding in the house and would be nervous around older men. And she still continues to have bad, violent dreams. During her teens and the months she spent making her album, Tidal , she suffered with an eating disorder. Frustrated at the misunderstanding by the media of her eating disorder she attempted to explain it in a 1998 Rolling Stone interview, "I definitely had an eating disorder. What was really frustrating for me was that everyone though I was anorexic, and I wasn't. I was really depressed and self-loathing. For me, it wasn't about being thin, it was about getting rid of the bait attached to my body. A lot of it came from the self-loathing that came from being raped at the point of developing my voluptuousness. I just thought that if you had a body and if you had anything on you that would be grabbed, it would be grabbed. So I did purposely get rid of it." As a result of her eating disorder Fiona became extremely thin. But the media wrote off her thinness as an attempt to "fit in." After her "Criminal" video from her album, "

Handling Your Personal Injury Claim If you search the Internet, you'll quickly find thousands of sites purporting to offer information on personal injury laws and procedures. But owned and operated by lawyers hungry for business, most of these sites trumpet the need to hire a lawyer to handle your claim. Here, that myth is unveiled. You don't need any special training to handle most injury claims just patience, perseverance and some good information about how the insurance claims process works.
Handling Your Own Injury Claim FAQ After you are injured, one of the first things to think about is whether you can settle your own insurance claim or whether you need a lawyer's help.

Self-injury. It is not a kind topic, not an easily discussed topic, nor an easily understood topic. Yet it is estimated that 1% of the population of the United States must deal with self-injury, and that it may be more prevalent in teens. I do not have all the answers, but I have been there myself, and that is why I created this web page: to show you that you are not alone, and to share some of my own information and resources. As you read through these pages, it will be evident that I am a Christian who is dedicated to my Lord. Please do not leave if you do not have this in common with me. There is material here for Christians and non-Christians alike. On the same note, if you are a Christian who does not self-injure, you may find something to help you with whatever you might struggle. As Paul writes, "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfull the law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2).
