Conversational Responsiveness of SLI Preschoolers
Background Information:
w Assertiveness - ability to initiate an interaction, also described as “access”
w Responsiveness - ability to appropriately respond and thereby maintain conversation
w By age 3, TD children are 90% successful with both initiating and responding in peer interactions
Purpose of this Study:
w
w Setting is the Language Acquisition Preschool of the University of Kansas
3 to 5 year-olds - 1/3 TD, 1/3 ESL, 1/3 S/LI
w 4 Subject groups: normal language (6), “marginal” (4), LI (4), SI (4)
w 6 observations, 4 min. each across 6 weeks during play center time, on-line coding used
w 4 types of responses coded: responses that prompt another turn, acknowledgment, attention only, and ignoring
w looked at responses by partners to subjects and responses by subjects to partners
w No differences between groups in the NUMBER of interactions or turns
w LI and SI children interacted with peers less often than the other groups (1/3 vs. 1/2 time)
w Peers ignored SI and LI initiations 2X more often (27% vs. 12 -15% of time)

Greetings! My name is Brenda Zenorini and I am a practicing speech/language therapist. This site will enable you to learn about a few important topics related to school speech/language therapy. Gather some information as you view this page. Pay attention to the site on summertime activities. Looks like a lot of fun for parents and kids during the wonderful summer time. tips for teachers
Reading is the single most important educational skill your students will learn. Understanding the organization and meaning of text and instruction in both phonics and literature is essential to helping young children read. By understanding the prerequisite skills for reading, teachers can build a solid foundation for their students to learn and succeed in school. summertime fun activities for children 2
The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI) put together a calendar of more activities parents can do with their children over the summer months. The calendar of activities which is available from the National Library of Education (while the supply lasts) can be ordered by calling 1-800-424-1616. 2 semantic pragmatic disorder 3
Semantic-Pragmatic Disorder was originally defined in the literature on Language Disorder in 1983, by Rapin and Allen, although at that time it was classified as a syndrome. They referred to a group of children who presented with mild Autistic features and specific semantic pragmatic language problems.

If You Think You Might Have HFA/AS - Getting a Diagnosis
Because those people with HFA/AS who get to university are among the most high-functioning and able on the autistic spectrum, they are also the most likely to slip through the diagnostic net. Although many are diagnosed as children, others reach university un-diagnosed or mis-diagnosed. The key to getting an accurate diagnosis is finding a clinician who actually has experience diagnosing adults with high-functioning autism or Asperger's syndrome (someone whose only experience is with "low-functioning" autism, or only with children, may be unhelpful). Unfortunately, this is easier said than done. It may also be useful to look at the page of Associated Conditions which describes conditions which can co-exist with HFA/AS, or which are sometimes diagnostically confused with HFA/AS. In some cases, people with HFA/AS get misdiagnosed with one of these, and presumably some people with these conditions get mistakenly diagnosed with HFA/AS.

    OAASIS INFORMATION SHEET
    Semantic Pragmatic Disorder
Semantic Pragmatic Disorder (semantic = the relationship between words or sentences and their meanings; pragmatic = making language work in context) is a communication disorder. It is believed that people with SPD are unable to process all the given information from certain situations. The disorder relates in some way to autism because children with SPD have difficulties in the same three areas called 'The Triad': socialising, language, and imagination.
SPD is often described as the 'outer spectrum of Autism', but all children with features of autism will have semantic and pragmatic difficulties with language. It is always best therefore to have a specialist medical consultation to exclude autism or find out where your child might be within the ASD spectrum and if he has any additional problems with Attention or Dyslexia. Children with SPD may also behave very differently at home from at school, and parents' concerns should always be taken seriously.
At every moment we are automatically (subconsciously) absorbing information, processing and analysing it, discarding what is irrelevant and storing what is important or salient. We use this to build up a bank or memory of words and meanings, like

The clearest and simplest language appropriate
    Summary
The WCAG guidelines advise using the clearest and simplest language appropriate. Perhaps this guideline is taken the least seriously from all WCAG , but for some, its lack of implementation can be a true accessibility hazard.
Many people require clear and simple language. In this article I want to focus on one disorder where the use of unclear language prevents their participation in many aspects of society. Semantic Pragmatic Disorder (semantic = the relationship between words and their meaning; Pragmatic = making language work in context) or SPD, this is a communication disorder. It is often associated with autism, but is often a disorder on to itself.
Non SPD people automatically and unconsciously build memory and knowledge of the connections between words, context and meaning, even for non visual words and non literal senses, like feelings, general sense of time, cues, metaphors, sarcasm. For people with SPD this process is impaired.

    Language and Learning Disorders
While autism includes significant and sometimes extreme learning and communication difficulties, there are some specific syndromes and disorders which also may be part of autism or share characteristics with autistic spectrum disorders. Sometimes identification of a specific syndrome will help determine appropriate remediation and accomodation more precisely than the overall diagnosis of an autistic spectrum disorder. Semantic Pragmatic Disorder This condition involves deficits in social and nonverbal communication. Semantic Pragmatic Disorder may be a separate PDD or it may simply describe the communication deficits in all verbal people with autism. Hyperlexia This syndrome is defined by very early precocious reading, delays in verbal language, and deficits in social skills. Hyperlexia may be a feature of autism or may occur without meeting the criteria for a specific Pervasive Developmental Disorder. Verbal or Oral Dyspraxia A motor disorder which specifically affects the mouth and speech.
