What is a High Functioning Autistic Disorder?
High-Functioning Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Semantic Pragmatic Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder etc.
Contrary to popular belief most people within the autistic spectrum are high-functioning individuals of average to high intelligence. All have varying levels of difficulty with instinctive social interaction, perfunctory communication and the processing of nonverbal communication, such as gestures and facial expressions, and sensory inputs, such as background noise and bright lights which many find hard to filter out.
The spectrum encompasses a wide range of diagnoses with multiple variables. Collectively they are often called Pervasive Developmental Disorders or PDDs and may be classed as:

83. Pragmatics
Semantic pragmatic disorder should be viewed as part of the autisticspectrum, rather than as a developmental language disorder.
http://www.kyrene.k12.az.us/resource/speech_program/spl_pragmatics_eligibility.h
Pragmatics This section of the resource guide will address issues related to students that perform adequately on typical standardized tests of oral language (ex. CELF-3, The Word Test-R, PPVT-3, TOLD-P-3, etc.) yet have difficulty communicating effectively with others. The child’s grammar, vocabulary, articulation and fluency are judged to be adequate but the way they use language socially is odd. Because a standardized test that addresses conversational difficulties does not exist, Kyrene SLPs struggle to place these students in the speech-language program because they do not meet current eligibility guidelines. After a thorough review of the research in this area, the eligibility guidelines have been updated with additional information. (July 2001) Pragmatics has been defined as follows: "Pragmatics is the area of language function that embraces the use of language in social contexts (knowing what to say, how to say it, and when to say it- and how to "be" with other people). (Caroline Bowen, 2001) "Pragmatics involves the three following aspects of language use: 1. the study of discourse and conversational skills; 2. the study of the relationship between pragmatics and other levels of language; and 3. the study of the situational determinants of the use of language." (Neville, 1990).

Some members recently wrote down some thoughts and feelings of what it is like to have a child/adult with Asperger syndrome. Dales Diary published some of our comments, it reads as follows:- "There often seems to be an invisible barrier between Tom and us, you have to explain so much because he cant read between the lines of conversations and takes things so literally. You notice the difference when he has a 'normal' friend around to play; they are much easier to converse with. It can be upsetting to see how he reacts. Sometimes he can appear aggressive if someone invades his space in a situation he's not sure of, it gives such a false impression because he's really very loving. The main pressure is in education - you really have to fight to get the assessments, the statement, then to keep the ECO hours. There is always another date looming up when you fear the help will be reduced. Also, you can't just wave goodbye in the morning and relax for the day, you worry how he's coping all the time." Autism is a "Spectrum Disorder" This means that there are many varying degrees of Autism. Is is fair to say that there are also a large (seemingly growing) number of disorders that are seen to be related to Autism in some way. Some have a closer relationship than others, Please note that the following list is in no particular order. Some people will have a conbination of problems which need to be addressed alongside the main diagnosis (e.g. Dyslexia) So we have included links to some of those as well. Aspergers Syndrome Asperger syndrome is a form of autism, a disability that affects the way a person communicates and relates to others. A number of the traits of autism are common to Asperger syndrome including: Difficulty in communicating
Difficulty in social relationships
A lack of imagination and creative play
However, people with Asperger syndrome usually have fewer problems with language than those with autism, often speaking fluently though their words can sometimes sound formal or stilted. People with Asperger syndrome often do not have the accompanying learning disabilities often associated with autism; in fact, people with Asperger syndrome are often of average or above average intelligence. Because of this, many children with Asperger syndrome enter mainstream school and with the right support and encouragement, can make good progress and go on to further education and employment.
