Shigellosis So-called shigella are responsible for shigellosis (bacillary-dysentery). They occur primarily in food, especially dairy products and, in infrequent cases, in drinking water. This is why good food and drinking water hygiene are imperative. The bacteria settle in the large intestine, where they cause the characteristic complaints. After an acute initial phase with fever and violent watery diarrhea there follows a long-term illness with bloody diarrhea, which can be accompanied by severe pains. Especially in the case of children, there is a danger of dehydration all the way to loss of consciousness. Shigellosis is determined by examining a stool culture, and is, as a rule, easily treatable. SHIGELLOSIS Shigellosis
, or Shigella , is a common infection caused by a bacteria. Since it is contagious, it can be passed from person to person. It often spreads among family members, especially children. Sometimes a large outbreak can occur with many people getting sick within a short time. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Diarrhea which may look bloody. Sometimes, stomach cramps, nausea or vomiting may occur. HOW DO YOU GET SHIGELLA? The germs leave the infected person in the feces (bowel movement). The germs must then get into another person's mouth and be swallowed to make him or her sick. This happens when people do not wash their hands well after a bowel movement and then fix food. Children get their bowel movement on toys which other children put in their mouths. Parents, daycare workers, or babysitters do not wash their own hands well after changing diapers or potty-training. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET SICK?

Shigellosis is an infectious disease caused by a family of bacteria called Shigella . Most people infected with Shigella develop diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, and stomach cramps starting a day or two after they are exposed to the bacterium. Shigellosis usually goes away within a week but some individuals, especially young children and the elderly, can suffer severe diarrhea that requires hospitalization . Some persons who are infected may have no symptoms at all, but may still pass the Shigella bacteria to others. Shigella bacteria are present in the diarrheal stools of infected persons while they are sick and for a week or two afterwards. Most Shigella infections occur when bacteria passes from stools or soiled fingers of one person to the mouth of another. This is usually the result of inadequate hand washing and hygiene. Shigellosis can result from eating food contaminated by food handlers who forget to wash their hands with soap after using the bathroom.

    SHIGELLOSIS (Shigella)
What is Shigellosis? Shigellosis is a bacterial infection of the large and small intestines caused by the bacteria called Shigella . Shigellosis commonly occurs during the summer and early fall in Utah. Who gets Shigellosis? Anyone can get shigellosis. Young children, especially those who attend day-care centers, are infected more often. How is Shigellosis spread? Shigella bacteria is found in the feces (stool) of an infected person. It may be spread by close contact or by eating or drinking contaminated food or water. What are the symptoms? People infected with Shigella may have mild to severe diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting, and cramps. Stools may contain blood, mucus and pus. Some people who are infected may have no symptoms. However, they still may transmit the infection to others. How soon do symptoms appear? Symptoms usually appear one to three days after infection. Onset of symptoms may also be as soon as 12 hours after infection, or as late as one week after infection. How long is a person able to spread Shigella People are infectious as long as the Shigella bacteria are present in the feces. Most people have

    SHIGELLOSIS What Is It?
Shigellosis is an infection of the intestines caused by a bacteria called shigella Symptoms Illness usually begins 1 to 4 days after swallowing the bacteria and may last 4 to 7 days. Sometimes people have no or few symptoms. Symptoms include:
    • Diarrhea (may be watery or bloody)
    • Fever
    • Stomach cramps
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Severe cases may cause dehydration (loss of fluids) or convulsions (in young children).
    How Is It Spread?
    • The germ leaves the body in the stool (bowel movements) of an infected person and infects another person when hands, food, or objects (toys, pens, etc.) contaminated with the stool, are placed in the mouth. Spread occurs because the infected person has not washed his/her hands well after going to the bathroom.
    • Spread can occur whether or not the infected person has symptoms.
    • Flies can spread shigella when they have contact with infected stool and then contaminate drinking water or food.
    • Shigella can be identified from a stool sample.

Shigellosis is a bacterial disease usually transmitted from person-to-person through hands contaminated with feces. It can also be transmitted through food and water contaminated with human feces, or through oral-anal sex practices. Shigellosis is highly communicable, as only 10-100 organisms must be ingested to establish an infection. In 1999, 368 cases of shigellosis were reported in Indiana, representing a 130% increase from the previous year (Figure 1). This is the second consecutive year that the incidence of shigellosis infection has increased. Figure 1. There are four Shigella species, all of which infect only humans. The serotype was determined for 310 (84%) of the 368 reported shigellosis cases. Shigella sonnei accounted for 295 cases (95%), 13 were S. flexneri (4%), and 2 (1%) were

    What is Shigellosis?
Shigellosis is an infection caused by Shigella bacteria that cause diarrhea. It is a fairly common disease. Most cases are seen in the summer and early fall and occur as single cases or outbreaks. Who gets Shigellosis?
Anyone can get Shigellosis, but it is recognized more often in young children. Those who may be at increased risk include children in day care centers, foreign travelers to certain countries, and people in nursing homes, hospitals, and other facilities. Animals are not infected with, nor do they carry Shigella bacteria. How are Shigella bacteria spread?
The bacteria are spread by eating or drinking contaminated food or water, or by contact with fecal material (stool) from an infected person. Because very small amounts of Shigella bacteria can cause illness, people can spread the bacteria on their hands if they do not thoroughly wash their hands after using the toilet or before preparing food or eating. Outbreaks have occasionally been associated with swimming in fresh water or improperly chlorinated pools.

Shigella from an infected individual’s stool is passed to other individuals, for example when hands are not washed properly or during oral sex. Food and water contaminated by an infected individual can also spread the disease. Flies have contaminated uncovered foods from infected human feces. Who gets shigellosis?
