Risk Factor or Not Dear Friends, The following article hit the news this morning. We have received many e-mail messages asking for more information. The public has been on an information roller coaster, the result of an explosion of medical reports, each heralding a 'breakthrough in SIDS research. We need to help people separate myth from fact and risk factor from cause. We are currently gathering more information about this specific research and will keep you updated. Please keep the following in mind: - When it comes to media coverage of SIDS, we often feel a sense of frustration in being confronted with misleading headlines, announcements of so-called breakthroughs and statements taken out of context. - Please read the article, "Mass Media's" Role in SIDS Education, at <

SIDS Facts
What is SIDS?
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the diagnosis given for the sudden death of an infant under one year of age that remains unexplained after a complete investigation, which includes an autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the symptoms or illnesses the infant had prior to dying and any other pertinent medical history. Because most cases of SIDS occur when a baby is sleeping in a crib, SIDS is also commonly known as crib death. SIDS is the leading cause of death in infants between 1 month and 1 year of age. Most SIDS deaths occur when a baby is between 1 and 4 months of age. African American children are two to three times more likely than white babies to die of SIDS, and Native American babies are about three times more susceptible. Also, more boys are SIDS victims than girls.
What Are the Risk Factors for SIDS?
A number of factors seem to put a baby at higher risk of dying from SIDS. Babies who sleep on their stomachs are more likely to die of SIDS than those who sleep on their backs. Mothers who smoke during pregnancy are three times more likely to have a SIDS baby, and exposure to passive smoke from smoking by mothers, fathers, and others in the household doubles a baby's risk of SIDS. Other risk factors include mothers who are less than 20 years old at the time of their first pregnancy, babies born to mothers who had no or late prenatal care, and premature or low birth weight babies.

Why, he " "Mr. Wright," Judge Warfield's low, precise voice interrupted the opening statement. "Your honor?" Maxwell replied, refraining from turning away from the Jury Box. "Mr. Wright, I understand the significance of this case, but, in light of the extreme public attention and your, um, interest in making an impact, I thought I should remind you that opening statements are limited to one minute."

SIDS Information Basic information about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome The following topics are discussed on this page: Please contact us at if you need additional information on SIDS. What is SIDS Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is one of the leading causes of death among infants one month through one year of age in the United States. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) defines SIDS as the sudden death of an infant under one year of age which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene and review of the clinical history. SIDS is therefore a diagnosis of exclusion, affixed only once all known and possible causes of death have been ruled out. Return to the top of this page The Impact of SIDS The sudden, unexpected death of an infant to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a tragic loss. Death happens suddenly, and the family often has no time to prepare. The infant may recently have been given a clean bill of health from the pediatrician. The death of an infant from SIDS disrupts the natural order and is a traumatic event that affects the family for the rest of their lives. The sudden, unexpected death of an infant threatens parents' safety and security and forces them to confront their own mortality. The lack of a discernible cause, the suddenness of the tragedy and the involvement of the legal system make a SIDS death especially difficult, leaving a great sense of loss and a need for understanding. The impact of SIDS is extensive and affects a myriad of people from parents, siblings, and grandparents to extended family, friends, babysitters, and co-workers. Families are directly helped through information and support services to alleviate their guilt and aid in understanding this devastating syndrome.

WHAT IS SIDS?
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the "sudden death of an infant under one year of age which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history" (Willinger, et al., 1991). This publication is being revised and will be printed and placed on this Web site. In the meantime, a new section on SIDS statistics has been added.
What Are the Most Common Characteristics of SIDS?
Most researchers now believe that babies who die of SIDS are born with one or more conditions that make them especially vulnerable to stresses that occur in the normal life of an infant, including both internal and external influences. SIDS occurs in all types of families and is largely indifferent to race or socioeconomic level. SIDS is unexpected, usually occurring in otherwise apparently healthy infants from 1 month to 1 year of age. Most deaths from SIDS occur by the end of the sixth month, with the greatest number taking place between 2 and 4 months of age. A SIDS death occurs quickly and is often associated with sleep, with no signs of suffering. More deaths are reported in the fall and winter (in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres) and there is a 60- to 40-percent male-to-female ratio. A death is diagnosed as SIDS only after all other alternatives have been eliminated: SIDS is a diagnosis of exclusion.

Anti-immunisation scare: The inconvenient facts
Dr. Steve Basser
(Vol 17, No 1)
Introduction
Over the last few years immunisation rates in Australia have fallen. As a result there have been outbreaks of the infectious diseases immunisation is designed to combat. Earlier this year there was a significant outbreak of pertussis (whooping cough) with at least three children dying from this preventable disease. There has been a lot of media attention focused on the immunisation issue, and in an attempt at ‘balanced’ reporting the views of individuals and groups who oppose immunisation have been given plenty of coverage. The most well known example of this was the ABC TV Quantum two part series aired on September 26 and October 3, 1996. The Australian Skeptics have been critical of the media in the past when they have unquestioningly given coverage to issues such as alien abductions or astrology. Can we now have our cake and eat it too? Is it reasonable to expect the media to only present the ‘immunisation is good’ message? Are there really two sides to the immunisation ‘debate’? This is the question the sceptical scientist should be asking. Perhaps the answer lies in the distinction between scientific evidence and individual opinion. There will be a number of different opinions, or beliefs, about immunisation but, as the Australian Skeptics have so often observed, believing something to be so does not necessarily make it so.

Did You Know?
  • Daytime performance and school grades might be impaired by sleep apnea (absence of breathing during sleep) and poor sleep habits.
  • Daytime sleepiness, hyperactivity and aggressive behavior can often be noted in children that snore.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea is present in up to 20 percent of children in the lowest 10th percentile of their school class.
  • Infants should sleep on their backs in a crib with a firm, tight-fitting mattress to reduce the risk of the child rolling over and suffocating on bedding. Back to Top
About Our Sleep Disorders Center
ACH is one of only a few pediatric hospitals in the nation to receive full service accreditation from the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers. Our staff works exclusively with children and adolescents. We have both specialized medical expertise and a unique understanding of the educational and comfort needs of children and their parents. ACH offers advanced techniques for diagnosis and management of sleep problems such as: infant, central and obstructive apnea (absence of breathing during sleep); sleep hygiene; and parasomnias such as sleep walking, sleep talking, night terrors, insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, periodic limb movements and sleep phase delay. Back to Top Sleep Problems Diagnosed and Treated
  • Infant Apnea Sometimes, infants may stop breathing for longer time periods (longer than 15 seconds) or show a color change. This is called "apnea"; it is not normal and may indicate a serious medical condition that needs diagnosis and treatment. Premature infants are especially likely to have frequent or prolonged apnea, but apnea may also occur in full term infants. We may use a home heart/breathing monitor on the child, which sounds an alarm should the infant stop breathing or drop the heart rate below an age appropriate limit. Monitors are used in babies believed to be at risk for apnea and bradycardia (low heart rate). Modern infant monitors have a computer chip that records apnea or low heart rates, allowing a physician to download and review the information to see what occured with the baby at the time the alarm sounded.
