Studies say SIDS education is reducing infant deaths
A baby in the correct sleeping position ... on its back
July 26, 1998
Web posted at: 2:13 p.m. EDT (1413 GMT) (CNN) Because of one simple act putting babies to sleep on their backs fewer children are dying of sudden infant death syndrome. New studies published last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that six years ago, almost three-quarters of parents put their babies to sleep on their stomachs, a practice thought to increase the risk of SIDS. Doctors found that just four years later, only one-quarter of parents put their babies to sleep in that position. During that time, the SIDS rate fell by nearly 40 percent. The researchers gave credit to the national "Back to Sleep" campaign by public health agencies.

Home Search Sitemap Contact ... Research Resources SIDS: "Back to Sleep" Campaign The Back to Sleep campaign is suitably named for its recommendation to place healthy babies on their backs to sleep. Placing babies on their backs to sleep reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), also known as "crib death." This campaign has been successful in promoting infant back sleeping to parents, family members, child care providers, health professionals, and all other caregivers of infants. This campaign is sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the SIDS Alliance, and the Association of SIDS and Infant Mortality Programs.
What's New with Back to Sleep African American infants are at a greater risk for SIDS. To address this issue the Back to Sleep campaign sponsors, the National Black Child Development Institute and several other organizations worked together to develop materials for a new initiative to reduce Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in African American communities. Brochures and magnets are now available. Single copies may be ordered online or by calling the NICHD Clearinghouse toll-free at 1-800-370-2943. Multiple copies and the new Resource Kit for Reducing the Risk of SIDS in African American Communities can be ordered through the Back to Sleep ordering line toll-free at 1-800-505-CRIB (2742).

New study suggests caffeine-SIDS link
Pregnant women are advised to stop drinking coffee or limit the amount to no more than a cup a day January 27, 1998 Web posted at: 1:19 p.m. EST (1819 GMT) ATLANTA (CNN) There may be a link between caffeine intake by pregnant women and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, according to new findings published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood. "There's evidence, not great, but evidence that babies who go on to die of SIDS are not normal, even from the very first day of life, which means it's happening sometime prior to that birth," said Dr. Al Steinschneider of the Atlanta-based American SIDS Institute. SIDS is the unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant, whose cause of death remains unexplained after a postmortem investigation. For some time, doctors have advised pregnant women to avoid coffee, tea and other caffeinated beverages, because studies have linked them to miscarriages and low birth weights. The SIDS study shows that drinking four or more cups of coffee a day throughout pregnancy almost doubles the chance of SIDS. The findings show that a pregnant mother's high caffeine intake may alter her fetus's respiratory system.

Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy (MSP)
Munchausen's Syndrome refers to a psychiatric disorder where patients pretend to have illnesses, and therefore are subjected to many medical tests and surgical procedures. Of course, these would never have been performed if the patient had not tried to fabricate them. However, the most notorious patients have often had dozens of surgical procedures for factitious (false) symptoms. Thus, this is a form of self-mutilation. Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy (MSP) is a parenting disorder where parents, usually the mother, fabricate symptoms in their children, thus subjecting the child to unnecessary medical tests and/or surgical procedures. In some cases, the parents also inflict injury and can kill their children in the process. MSP is not rare in Apnea Programs. Apnea is the perfect disorder for MSP, because infants appear normal between episodes. Therefore, a parent can bring her baby to a medical facility, fabricate a history of an apparent life threatening event, and the baby will be admitted, many tests performed, sometimes even surgery (such as tracheostomomies) are performed. MSP parents can be quite good at this, often switching from doctor to doctor so that it is difficult for one individual to put it all together. There have been documented cases of MSP in apnea clinics. However, these are much rare than "true" infant apnea.

13 Jan 2001 It appears that there are problems with the Build TuneData routine if you have an old version of SCRRUN.DLL installed. The next version of the full installation package will correct this. In the meantime, you can download a working version on the Files page. Thanks to Vince for working to track this one down.
06 Jan 2001 I have been having horrible problems trying to upload V1.2 to the Files page, so I have had to put the file on a mirror site until I get to the root of the problem. You should now be able to download the file OK. Apologies to anyone who has been trying to get it.
06 Jan 2001 I've had some useful feedback on SIDManager, and a few people have identified bugs. I have managed to track down a few problems, and have added some new features, so the new version is ready to go. The main changes are:
  • Added to RMB menus on the PlayList so that the details of the selected song can be viewed. Added 'Select All' to main menu and PlayList RMB menu. Improved other RMB Menus. Added Double-click functionality to Lists.

    July 23, 1995 - Oct. 3, 1995
We were blessed on Sunday, July the 23rd at 8:14 P.M. With the arrival of our third child, weighing in at 8lbs, 3oz. and 20 inches long. He came into this world three weeks ahead of schedule. He was given a clean bill of health, a fine healthy baby boy. The apple of his parents eyes.
Yes we thought we were a complete family. With two healthy girls and now a little boy. Our dreams were all finally coming true,
so we thought. We named this little
boy after his daddy, James Alan and his grandpa Pete. Our little boy was given the name of Peter James-Alan Buth. With the nickname of PJ.
We all adjusted to the routine of having a new baby in the house. It wasn't easy to do with a very active two year old running around, but somehow we managed. Before we knew it our little boy was 6 weeks old, and it was getting time for mommy to return to work. Sunday the 3rd of September we held PJ's dedication. My last weekend with my son before I had to return back to work. I loved the time off, but I knew there was no way we could pay our bills unless I returned to work. One of the good things about returning to work, was that my husband and I work different shifts so we shared the child care needs. We didn't have to worry about child care expenses. Everything seemed to be adjusting to fit with everyone's schedule. I went to work during the day and came home to my children at night.
