Types of Psoriasis, Their Causes and Treatments
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by inflammation of the skin, itching, and thick, red areas of skin covered by silvery scales or flakes. Skin problems caused by psoriasis range from cases so mild the psoriasis goes unnoticed, to so severe that large areas of the body are covered.
Skin problems associated with psoriasis commonly affect the scalp, joints and lower back of the psoriasis sufferer, although inflammation can occur anywhere on the body. One of the more common types of skin disorders, psoriasis affects between five to seven million people in the United States, and over 150,000 new cases are reported yearly.
Is Psoriasis Contagious?
While psoriasis causes unsightly and emotionally distressing skin problems, it is not one of the contagious skin disorders. Patients are often embarrassed by the condition, and it can affect their social activity levels. Some people may have a negative reaction to psoriasis sufferers, and may avoid touching or interacting with them. This often leads to feelings of anger, frustration and depression. Self-esteem and self-worth can be damaged by social stigmas. Skin Disorder Sites

Herbal Soaps Has soap ever cured skin disorders or skin diseases of ANY kind? Let's examine why we use soap in the first place: To clean the skin of dirt and grime To feel fresh and fragrant To treat minor skin infections or for oily skin treatment Now for the reality Most of the modern soaps give a "clean" feeling by emphasizing the "fragrance" aspect. This, psychologically, help you feel fresh and therefore "clean". Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Chapter 123. Common Skin Disorders
Contributor: Barbara A. Gilchrest; Noel Chiu Many common skin conditions affect younger and older adults equally. However, certain inflammatory diseases, infections, and neoplasms of the skin increase in prevalence with age. Inflammatory skin reactions that may occur in the elderly include drug-induced eruptions, erythema multiforme, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and anticonvulsant hypersensitivity syndrome ( see Table 123-1 ). Benign skin tumors that are common in the elderly include seborrheic keratoses, acrochordons, keratoacanthomas, and cherry angiomas ( see Table 123-2
Management Principles
The elderly patient who presents with a skin condition should be asked about use of potential irritants, such as rubbing alcohol and detergents. The patient's concept of the skin condition and expectations for therapy should also be discussed. Maximizing compliance: The prescribed treatment regimen should be as simple as possible and should be tailored to the patient's physical capabilities. For example, a patient who has difficulty applying a topical medication because of neurologic impairment or arthritis may need a back scratcher-like applicator for hard-to-reach dematoses. In some situations, the assistance of a visiting nurse may be necessary.

Photosensitivity Skin Disorders These are conditions where the skin reacts abnormally to light, especially ultraviolet light. Photosensitivity skin disorders (PSD) are classified by the wavelength to which the individual reacts. Some PSD are due to the presence of drugs, hormones or heavy metals in the individual's skin. Photoallergies may also result when light rays interact with certain chemicals. Photocontact allergens include:
- phenothiazine (a type of tranquilizer)
- sulfonamides (a type of antibiotic)

It occurs in susceptible individuals when they are exposed to solar radiation that is more intense than usual, i.e. as in the first time in the sun that season or a body part that has no prior UV exposure. It may also occur when the patient travels to a higher latitude or lower latitude. The skin-rash reaction heals within 7-10 days if additional sun exposure is avoided. Sunscreens are mandatory to protect from UVA and UVB, although UVA protective agents are more effective in

The skin is the largest organ of the body, covering the entire body. As the outer protective covering of the body, it is exposed to the environment, making it vulnerable to growths, rashes, discolorations, cysts, burns, injuries, infections, and other disorders.
Dermatology is the study of skin diseases and conditions. A dermatologist treats disorders relating to the skin, hair, and nails. A dermatologist is a physician who has completed medical school, at least one year of postdoctoral training and three or more years of intensive residency training in dermatology. After medical school, internship, and residency, a dermatologist is eligible to take the board certification examination offered by the American Board of Dermatology. Currently, there are approximately 9,000 board certified dermatologists in the US. Other physicians and specialists, may be involved in the prevention and treatment of skin disorders. Lucile Packard Children's Hospital is located in Palo Alto, adjacent to Stanford University Hospital, approximately 20 miles north of San Jose, CA and 40 miles south of San Francisco.

An Introduction to Skin and Skin Disorders
From acne to xerosis, skin conditions number in the hundreds. In fact, some doctors, called dermatologists, specialize in skin disorders of the skin, but is it any wonder: the skin is the largest organ in the body. The skin of the average adult male covers more than two square yards and weighs about ten pounds.
    Not "Only Skin Deep"
The skin is more than what you see on the surface. It's actually made up of three distinct layers, each serving a special function, and ranges from 0.5 mm in the eyelid to 2 mm in the palm of the hand. (One inch equals about 25 millimeters.)
The top layer is the epidermis and is in itself composed of several layers. The "living layer" is what produces the cells that make up the epidermis. As the cells age they are pushed to the surface to form the "dead" layer, which acts as a first line of defense against toxins, foreign bodies, and sun. These dead cells are then sloughed off to make room for other dead cells. The whole process takes about four weeks.
The middle layer is the dermis. Often called the "true skin," the dermis contains, like other organs, muscle cells, nerve fibers, and blood vessels called capillaries. What makes it unique, however, is the presence of sweat and sebaceous glands and hair follicles. Sebaceous glands produce an oily substance, called sebum, which lubricates and protects the skin. Sweat glands are part of the body's cooling system; as sweat evaporates, body temperature drops. Capillaries are also integral to cooling: when body temperature rises, blood vessels dilate causing the flush seen with fever or overexertion.
