Welcome to LAPSF.com, the website of Laparoscopic Associates of San Francisco. Our program specializes in laparoscopic surgery, with the goal of minimizing pain, complications and recovery time so that patients can return to their normal activities as soon as possible. Most operations that formerly required large open incisions can now be done with 3-5 small incisions. Some can be done through needlescopic incisions - incisions so small they cause minimal scarring and almost no pain. Our expertise is in three areas of laparoscopic surgery: Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery
We are the only group in the Western United States that offers the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, Biliopancreatic Diversion/Duodenal Switch and the LapBand TM all laparoscopically. Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery
This area encompasses a variety of procedures on the intestines and solid organs, many of which are performed with needlescopic instruments. We are also offering several new procedures, including laparoscopic gastric pacemaker placement for diabetic gastroparesis; laparoscopic placement of a hepatic arterial infusion system for patients with colon cancer metastasis to the liver; and laparoscopic radiofrequency and cryoablation of liver tumors. Endocrine Surgery
This area encompasses procedures on the thyroid, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands and the pancreas. The procedures on the adrenal glands and pancreas can be performed laparoscopically.

  • Do you snore?
  • Have you been told that you stop breathing while you sleep?
  • Do you wake from sleep snoring, choking, or struggling for breath?
  • Are you overweight?
  • Are you sleeping during the day?
  • Do you have headaches when you wake up?
  • Do you fall asleep unintentionally?
  • When you wake up, do you feel unrefreshed?
If you have three or more of the above symptoms speak with your physician about having a sleep study.
People most likely to have or develop sleep apnea are those who snore loudly, are overweight, or have some physical abnormality in the nose, throat or other parts of the upper airway. Sleep apnea seems to run in some families suggesting a possible genetic basis. Sleep Apnea is treatable through a variety of methods, both surgical and non-surgical. The specific therapy for sleep apnea is tailored to the individual patient based on medical history and the results of a diagnostic sleep study. Some people may need additional testing called a Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT). This test is used to assess and evaluate daytime sleepiness. The test is a series of naps administered at two-hour intervals throughout the day.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea
LYLE D. VICTOR, M.D.
Oakwood Hospital, Dearborn, Michigan
O bstructive sleep apnea is a disorder in which complete or partial obstruction of the airway during sleep causes loud snoring, oxyhemoglobin desaturations and frequent arousals. As a result, affected persons have unrestful sleep and excessive daytime sleepiness. The disorder is associated with hypertension, impotence and emotional problems. Because obstructive sleep apnea often occurs in obese persons with comorbid conditions, its individual contribution to health problems is difficult to discern. The disorder has, however, been linked to angina, nocturnal cardiac arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, stroke and motor vehicle crashes. Even though obstructive sleep apnea is fairly common, it often remains undiagnosed in primary care practice. Because the disorder is associated with significant morbidity and even some mortality, family physicians need to be familiar with its clinical presentation and treatment. Pathophysiology Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by repetitive upper airway obstruction during sleep as a result of narrowing of the respiratory passages. Patients with the disorder are most often overweight, with associated peripharyngeal infiltration of fat

48. Sleep Apnea Masks
Details about the product and contact information.
http://www.sleepapneamasks.com.au/
Collin Anderson , an Australian Consulting Engineer and sleep apnea sufferer, believed in order to have a restful night’s sleep a mask would have to be custom made to the person’s face. After 7 years of research, development and testing, we believe we have produced the world’s best mask because of our patented design features. These features address all the problems such as leakage, pressure sores (caused by excessive strap pressure), noise, and visibility, cleaning problems, sore ear lobes, moisture and Co2 build up etc.etc. A Sleep Apnea Mask custom made to your exact facial shape. The Anderson Mask is the only one of its type available anywhere in the world.
As a comparison, conventional masks have a huge sealing area of approximately 4 square inches. This requires a heavy strap pressure and so the larger the sealing area the more strap pressure required. Your new Personally Moulded Sleep Apnea Mask is only 1/8 of the sealing area of a conventional mask therefore, a lot less strap pressure and a lot more comfort.

Sleep apnea afflicts more than 12 million people in the United States. It takes its name from the Greek word apnea, which means "without breath." People with sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, often for a minute or longer, and as many as hundreds of times during a single night. Sleep apnea can be caused by complete obstruction of the airway (obstructive apnea) or partial obstruction (obstructive hypopnea; hypopnea is slow, shallow breathing), both of which can disrupt sleep. There are three types of sleep apnea — obstructive, central, and mixed. Of these, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common. OSA occurs in approximately 2% of women and 4% of men over the age of 35. Physiology and Causes The cause of OSA is unclear. The site of obstruction in most patients is the soft palate, extending to the region at the base of the tongue. The body has no rigid structure, such as cartilage or bone, in this area to keep the airway open. During the day, muscles in the region keep the passage open. As a person with OSA falls asleep, these muscles relax to a point where the airway collapses and becomes obstructed. When the airway closes, breathing stops, and the sleeper awakens to open the airway. The arousal from sleep usually lasts only a few seconds, but brief arousals disrupt continuous sleep and prevent the person from reaching the deep stage of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which the body needs to rest and replenish its strength. Once normal breathing is restored, the person falls back to sleep, only to repeat the cycle throughout the night.

Why do we snore?
The sound of snoring occurs when air cannot flow freely in and out of your throat. This is due to a narrowing of the passages at the back of the mouth and nose. During sleep, muscle tone decreases throughout the body. When your throat muscles relax, the soft palate and uvula (the fleshy structure that dangles from the roof of the mouth) vibrates as you breathe in and out. Snoring tends to become worse with alcohol or sedative consumption before bedtime, weight gain and a blocked nose. Snoring often increases with age.
