Social Anxiety Group We meet on Saturdays from 1pm to 4pm in Havre de Grace , Maryland. This is exit #85 off interstate 95. Meetings are held in my home in a relaxed comfortable setting.
Our meetings begin with listening to a CBT audio tape from Dr Richards Overcoming SAD series. This lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour. We then discuss the cognitive material on the tape and how it might relate to our own life and behaviors. This is followed by a short break. What follows are behavioral group and individual exercises. These, like the tapes, are progressive and build up and become more challenging as participants feel ready to move up on their individual anxiety behavioral hierarchy. There are a minimal number of behavioral exercises in the first few sessions but group members invariably begin to look forward to this part of our meeting as the most fun and rewarding. As we progress in the 20 tape series the behavioral exercises are slowly expanded. Participation in the activities is completely voluntary. No one is coerced into participation; however, they are encouraged to "stretch" themselves just a little each week.

We can take back our power. We just need to be shown how. How do we know? We have been there. We know. We know the frustration, we know the feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, we know the daily struggle in trying to get our lives back. And we also know that we can. We did. And we have been teaching other people with an anxiety disorder how to do this with our Australia and New Zealand Mental Health Award winning Mindfulness Cognitive Panic Anxiety Management Workshops. Our main focus is to teach people how to Take Back the Power from their anxiety disorder and this is reflected throughout our site. We do not provide medical advice and our website is not a replacement for professional treatment, but complimentary to it. Social Anxiety (Phobia)
Social Anxiety is the experience of fear and/or anxiety in social situations in which people fear they may embarrass themselves or make a fool of themselves in some way. Many people can experience some form of anxiety when in a social situation. We all know the nervous anticipation we feel when we have to stand up in front of a group to speak or give a presentation or when walking into a social gathering where we don't know many people. There can be varying degrees of social anxiety. A diagnosis of social anxiety is made if the fear and anxiety is effecting us to a degree that it is debilitating and restricting our life. For instance, if we feel fear and anxiety/panic only when we have to give a presentation in front of a group, (and we are not required to give presentations on a regular basis), then we would have a specific phobia of public speaking If we fear we will embarrass ourselves or make a fool of ourselves, in some or all areas of our life, to the point where we experience intense anxiety and/or panic then a diagnosis of Social Anxiety could be given. Common experiences and fears relating to Social Anxiety are :
  • fear of embarrassing ourselves in some way
  • feelings of self-doubt
  • feeling uncertain and insecure
  • fear of embarrassing ourselves in some way

Current Mood: geeky Comment on this Wednesday, March 26th, 2003 5:28 am nightspawn Faith and Loathing in New Jersey (crosspost) It's 5 am and I'm still awake. Usually not a good sign. I'm really hurtin' here, wish I could talk to somebody. God would be nice, but I think I don't really believe he/she/it even exists. This isn't a conclusion I came to suddenly, I've been leaking faith for about 20 years. Believe me, I'm envious of people who have a true belief in a higher power of some type. I feel I can't even pray anymore, they just feel like empty words. I had gotten to the point where most of my prayers were of the foxhole variety anyway, usually if I was having something like a major panic attack or feeling painfully depressed like I am now. I was with my Dad earlier, he's frustrated at my lack of progress. Me too, don't know why I can't overcome this shit. Every day my self loathing gets a little stronger and my hope diminishes a bit more. In my quiet moments I get scared. Aren't you glad you are my LJ friend? Nothing but kittens and sunshine from me. Feh.

H owever, perhaps because by it's very nature sufferers of Social Anxiety are reluctant to talk about their problems or seek help, the condition is still not widely known amongst the general public, and was only recognized as a disorder in it's own right as recently as 1980. Social Phobia Statements by M.C. These are statements that helped me make progress against my social phobia..... It doesn't matter what other people think about me. I don't need anyone else's approval of anything I say or do. There will almost always be people out there who don't like me. This is totally normal. I don't need to be everyone's friend, or try to please other people so they will like me. I just need to be myself and if people don't like me for it, tough luck! They really aren't worth knowing anyway I no longer want to feel ashamed about how I have reacted to situations in the past. I've had some very painful experiences in my life, some as a result of social phobia and some not. The memories of these experiences no longer have the power to hurt me as they once did. I can benefit from these experiences, because now I can look back at them like old photographs. I will use them to learn and grow. I have become a better and stronger person because of these experiences. Even though I'm going through therapy right now, I need to realize that there will still be times when I'm going to feel anxious.

PAX The organisation for people who suffer from panic attacks, agoraphobia, In 1990 The Royal College of Psychiatrists reported that more than nine million Britons will suffer from abnormal anxiety and fears at some time in their lives. My name is Alice Neville. In 1966 I founded THE OPEN DOOR the first self-help organisation in the world for people suffering from agoraphobia, a problem that had affected my own life from childhood to my mid-twenties when I overcame it altogether. Very soon we had 4,000 members, and the late Dr. Claire Weekes, Author of Self Help For Your Nerves came over from Australia to help and advise us, treating numbers of our members, lecturing all over Britain, appearing on TV, radio and writing articles for our newsletters. Because of family and career commitments I later handed over the running of TOD to the members themselves. Some years later I wrote a book (now out of print) entitled Who's Afraid of Agoraphobia? 10,000 copies were sold almost immediately and one of the first reactions was that many people suffered from panic attacks but were not necessarily agoraphobic. Others who contacted me were suffering from social phobia which until then I had always considered to be part of the agoraphobia syndrome. The result was a new book called just Who's Afraid...?

SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER
First Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Approved for Long-Term Treatment of Social Anxiety Disorder NEW YORK, February 10 Zoloft is the first and only selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) approved in the United States for long-term treatment in patients with this condition. Two double-blind, placebo-controlled trials including more than 600 patients demonstrated that Zoloft was significantly more effective than placebo in reducing the anxiety, fear and avoidance behaviors experienced by people with social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia. In one of these studies 53 percent of patients receiving Zoloft responded to treatment compared to 29 percent of placebo patients. Patients enrolled in the study had a mean duration of social anxiety disorder for nearly 21 years. "Social anxiety disorder is the most common anxiety disorder in the United States. It affects work functioning, social relationships and also impairs quality of life," said Cathryn Clary, MD, Senior Medical Director, Pfizer Inc. "Zoloft's demonstrated efficacy in both acute and long-term treatment provides an important new option for people suffering from this disorder."

university of texas at dallas/student counseling center/su1.608/972 883-2575 Overcoming Social Anxiety The college years can be a crucial time for practicing and improving social skills to be used in one’s personal and professional life. Shy students often find this task challenging. While there may be many causes of shyness, a few common themes predominate; low self esteem and an accompanying fear of rejection; excessive concern for others’ approval; and the memory of a past hurtful social experience. When students suffer from these or other causes of shyness, they may be likely to avoid others, be absent from campus extracurricular functions, not speak up in class, be unable to initiate casual conversations or ask someone for a date. They may also have trouble asking for help, standing up for themselves in difficult situations, or give the appearance of being uninterested in others. If I am a shy student what can I do to learn to feel more comfortable in social settings? These tips may help the shy student to feel more confident.
  • Adjust your attitude ; -This can be done on two fronts; changing your unrealistic expectations of your own behavior and changing your distorted perception that others will condemn you if you are not perfect. Practice replacing your self-critical thoughts with more supportive ideas. For example, "Most people can handle it when someone makes a mistake", "It would be nice if this had turned out differently, but it’s not the end of the world", " No one else is perfect. I don’t have to be either."

What is social anxiety disorder? Symptoms Is it different from being shy? Treatment What is social anxiety disorder?
Social anxiety disorder is characterized by fear and anxiety in social situations, extreme shyness, timidity, and concerns about being embarrassed in front of others. Social anxiety disorder affects up to 5% of children, and is the third most common psychiatric disorder in childhood. Situations that trigger anxiety and are often difficult for children with social anxiety disorder are speaking in front of the class, talking with unfamiliar children, performing in front of others, taking tests, and interacting with strangers. Children with social anxiety are often lonely, have fewer friends than other children their age, and report symptoms of depression. Children who develop social anxiety before the age of 12 are not likely to outgrow the disorder. Left untreated, many children with social anxiety disorder grow up to be socially anxious adults and continue to have problems in interpersonal situations.

Disorders and Conditions > Social Phobia Social Phobia
Social phobia, also called social anxiety, is a disorder characterized by overwhelming anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations. People with social phobia have a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being watched and judged by others and of being embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions. Their fear may be so severe that it interferes with work or school - and other ordinary activities. While many people with social phobia recognize that their fear of being around people may be excessive or unreasonable, they are unable to overcome it. They often worry for days or weeks in advance of a dreaded situation.
Social phobia can be limited to only one type of situation - such as a fear of speaking in formal or informal situations, or eating or drinking in front of others - or, in its most severe form, may be so broad that a person experiences symptoms almost anytime they are around other people. Social phobia can be very debilitating - it may even keep people from going to work or school on some days. Many people with this illness have a hard time making and keeping friends.
Physical symptoms often accompany the intense anxiety of social phobia and include blushing, profuse sweating, trembling, and other symptoms of anxiety, including difficulty talking and nausea or other stomach discomfort. These visible symptoms heighten the fear of disapproval and the symptoms themselves can become an additional focus of fear. Fear of symptoms can create a vicious cycle: as people with social phobia worry about experiencing the symptoms, the greater their chances of developing the symptoms.. Social phobia often runs in families and may be accompanied by depression or alcohol dependence.
