Irritable bowel syndrome (spastic colon) Also known as functional or nervous diarrhoea, colon or vegetative neurosis, or mucous colitis; main symptoms are Constipation and Diarrhoea , turn and turn about, occasional cramping pains in lower abdomen, and sometimes pain on defecating. Muscular contraction in the colon or ileum is uncoordinated and spasmodic, though not for any reason which can be detected by X-rays or endoscopy; causes are as likely to be psychological - family, marital, or work problems, cancer Phobia , in fact Stress in general - as dietary. However, a low-fibre diet, or intolerance to wheat, corn, dairy products, citrus fruit, tea, coffee, apples, pears, and salads - in that order- is sometimes the culprit (see food Allergy ). Less often, spasms can be triggered off by a bowel infection, bowel parasites ( Threadworms , tapeworms, amoebae, etc.), overgrowth of bowel flora, Candidiasis , spinal maladjustment, or excessive use of laxatives. Twice as many women are affected as men. The diagnosis is mainly made by excluding other conditions, but if the symptoms mentioned above are accompanied by persistent

Last Revised: November 2000 What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)? It is a group of symptoms that occur due to lack of normal movement (too fast or too slow) of food products through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract or bowel. Common symptoms include lower abdominal pain, altered stool frequency, constipation or loose watery stools, passage of mucus, bloating, abdominal distention and pain with intercourse. How is IBS diagnosed? How common is it among women with pelvic pain? Symptoms of mild, moderate, or severe IBS are commonly reported in women with pelvic pain. This makes sense because the female organs and bowel are both located in the lower abdomen. What causes the pain? It is thought that the pain results when the bowel stretches and/or contracts so strongly that nerves in the bowel fire pain messages to the brain. The pain ranges from mild to severe and can last for short or long periods of time. What can I do about it?

These conditions are lumped together under the name of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. This disorder involves problems with bowel activity where muscle contractions in the bowel occur irregularly - this is, too often or too infrequently resulting in symptoms of abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhea and gaseousness. These symptoms may occur often or only occasionally and may last from hours to days or even months if not treated. Women seem to have this condition more often than men. It can begin in the teenage years but rarely begins in persons over 50 years old. Let's talk about each of the symptoms and their causes.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (Spastic Colon)
What is irritable bowel syndrome?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), also called spastic colon, is a chronic (long-lasting) disorder of the colon, or large intestine. It is the most common gastrointestinal disorder. It affects women twice as often as men and usually begins in early adult life. Although the disorder can cause much distress, it is not serious and does not lead to serious disease.
How does it occur?
Irritable bowel syndrome is not a disease but a functional disorder, which means there is no sign of disease when the colon is examined by x-ray or other tests. The cause of IBS is not fully understood. Most symptoms of IBS are probably related to abnormal muscle movement or spasm of the lower part of the colon. Sometimes the spasm delays the bowel movement. At other times it may lead to more rapid passage of the bowel movement, resulting in diarrhea. Attacks may be triggered by a specific food or by stress or depression because muscle movement in the colon is partly controlled by the nervous system.
What are the symptoms?

    SPASTIC COLON
Dear Alice, My father is 57 years old and he is experiencing pains which he has been told could be symptoms of a spastic colon. What can he do with his diet to alleviate these spasms, or what things can trigger these spasms? Helping son
Dear Helping son, Irritable bowel syndrome, also known as irritable or spastic colon, mucus colitis, or nervous bowel, is a the nation's current #1 stomach disorder. It is characterized by a disruption of the normal pattern of muscular contractions that move waste through the intestines. The result is either diarrhea or constipation or alternating bouts of both. Other symptoms include abdominal pain or swelling, feelings of excessive fullness, gas, painful bowel movements, indigestion, heartburn, and nausea. Since these symptoms can occur with other disorders, diagnosis by a physician is important. Irritable bowel syndrome usually develops in late adolescence or early adulthood, and affects twice as many women as men. It does not lead to cancer, does not require surgery, is not caused by any known physical abnormality, and is not the same as inflammatory bowel disease a much more serious disorder. However, it is a chronic disorder and is more difficult to cope with than the occasional bout of diarrhea or nervous stomach that most people experience from time to time. There are a number of treatments that may help; most should be applied with the advice of a doctor. Antispasmodics may be prescribed to control diarrhea, tranquilizers for temporary relief of anxiety, and bulk laxatives (high in fiber) or stool softeners to relieve constipation, if necessary. If symptoms persist, some doctors may suggest some form of psychotherapy. Though no food or category of food is a known or even suspected culprit, there's no harm in watching your diet, and if certain foods seem to set off symptoms, try avoiding them. A high-fiber diet (fruits, vegetables and whole grains, taken with plenty of fluids) is known to promote normal bowel function.

    Hello,
    dear dayna,
There are many possible causes for your abdominal pain including a response to stress. Based on the information that you present, i assume that yu feel well except for the abdominal pain, have not lost weight, have no other symptoms, and do not have any cocurrent medical conditions. The only way to definitively rxclude other diseases that coud be causing your pains is by a series of investigations. If yu are anxious about the pain or if there are additional symptoms, then you should discuss having a wokup don by your doctor. This infrmation is presented for educational purposes only. Always ask specific questions to your personal physician. HFHSM.D.-rf

Many times the real cause behind sickness and disease is this retention and reabsorption of built up toxic waste. The high fat, low fiber diets Americans eat on the run leave poisons in your system. Two powerful herbal formulas act together to cleanse and purify your system. They flush out poisons that accumulate in the intestines and colon that lead to intestinal tract chaos.
