Het team onderhoudt daarnaast contacten met andere specialisten. De open rug Bij spina bifida (SB) is er, in de meest uitgebreide vorm, sprake van een niet sluiten van de huid, van een of meer wervelbogen en van het ruggenmergsvlies. Hierdoor ligt het ruggenmerg aan de oppervlakte. Het ruggenmerg zelf ligt ter plaatse ook "opengeklapt". Er zijn ook vormen waarbij de het ruggenmergsvlies de buitenste begrenzing vormt. Het ruggenmerg kan overlangs in twee helften gespleten zijn. Bij intacte huid maar open wervelbogen spreekt men van spina bifida occulta ("verborgen"). Als gevolg van de afwijking bestaat er een uitval van de neurologische functies onder het niveau van de open rug. Dit betekent in meerdere of mindere mate een verlamming van de benen en meestal ook uitval van de controle over de sluitspieren. Hoe lager het defect, hoe gunstiger het uitvalt. Enkele centimeters kunnen het verschil tussen lopen en een rolstoel betekenen.
