Sprains and strains
Sprains and strains are a description of what happens to the muscles, and other non-bony structures connected to our bones, when they are put under excessive pressure or strain. The result is swelling, pain, bruising and loss or impairment of function of the affected area.
Symptoms
  • The first thing you notice is pain, often severe. This is usually at the time of injury, eg "going over on your ankle" or twisting your knee, but some times the damage is done by repetitive and less major strains and the pain becomes apparent later and possibly even the following day.
  • Swelling is often obvious, and this is usually very tender
  • The area affected may be reddened and rather warmer than usual.
  • Bruising usually appears, often away from the area most affected, as blood which is released from the damaged soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, and tendons) seeps out along the muscles and other structures before coming near the skin.
  • Pain and swelling causes the part affected to be difficult to use normally.
Diagnosis
If in doubt you should seek advice from a nurse, physiotherapist or a doctor. This may be available nearby at some sports clubs etc., or may come from your own doctor's team, or possibly the accident and emergency department at the hospital.

Upper Extremity Injuries Lower Extremity Injuries By: Jonathan Cluett, M.D. Last Updated: 10/2002 What is the difference between a sprain and a strain? A sprain is an injury to a ligament. A ligament is a thick, tough, fibrous tissue that connects bones together. Commonly injured ligaments are in the ankle knee , and wrist . The ligaments can be injured by being stretched too far from their normal position. The purpose of having ligaments is to hold your skeleton together in a normal alignment ligaments prevent abnormal movements. However, when too much force is applied to a ligament, such as in a fall, the ligaments can be stretched or torn; this injury is called a sprain.

Sprains and Strains by Dr. Bruce Baker Dr. Bruce Baker, an orthopaedic surgeon in Syracuse, New York has provided his expert opinion on this topic. Full content and more 'Ask The Doctor Q and A's can be found in the The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Web Site.
    Q. What is the difference between a sprain and a strain?
    A. By definition, a sprain involves injury to a ligament that supports a joint. A strain involves injury to the muscle and tendon that move the bones of the joint. The severity of the sprain or strain (partial or complete tearing), the location of the injured structure and the activity level of the injured person (recreational swimmer or competitive runner) will help to determine the length of time required for recovery. An orthopaedic surgeon can evaluate the injury and help establish a good rehabilitation plan.

    SPRAINS AND STRAINS
A sprain is the over stretching or tearing the ligaments. They are usually caused by a sudden twist or bending of a joint. A strain is the over stretching or tearing of a muscle, fascia or tendon and is often caused by an overlift, a sudden move, or overexerting oneself to do something. Many times the two conditions come together during an injury along with bruising. These injuries may be either mild or severe and can take up to six weeks to heal, especially if a ligament is torn. The symptoms are pain, redness, bruising, swelling and stiffness usually worse on motion and touch. A severe sprain may be had to differentiate from a break unless the area is x-rayed. Give Arn. immediately after the injury and elevate the injured area and rest it in a comfortable position. Use ice and cold water with Arn. tincture for the first twenty four hours after the injury. If the skin is broken, do not use Arnica externally. After twenty four hours use hot water and hot compresses to remove swelling and improve circulation. If Arnica is still indicated aid the tincture to the water as well if there are no open wounds. Light bandaging will also help reduce swelling and provide support. In the case of a sprained ankle an elastic bandage may be wound in a figure eight pattern around the ankle, or if the sprain is severe, an air cast will prove useful. Take the person to the doctors for an X-ray if the swelling does not look much better after twenty four hours. There may be a fracture or a severe tendon injury.

Some patients fear the worst, especially when pain is severe. Although back pain can be caused by fracture, disc disorder, or tumor, the most common cause is sprain or strain. Sprains and strains often result from excessive physical demands on the back. Lifting something too heavy, a sudden fall, car crash, or sports injury can cause soft tissues (ligaments, muscles, tendons) to stretch too much. Sprains · Strains The spine includes vertebrae (bones), discs (cartilaginous pads or shock absorbers), the spinal cord and nerve roots (neurological wiring system), and blood vessels (nourishment). Ligaments link bones together, and tendons connect muscles to bones and discs. The ligaments, muscles, and tendons work together to handle the external forces the spine encounters during movement, such as bending forward and lifting.
