SPRAINS AND STRAINS
WHAT IS IT?

A sprain or strain can happen any time-while you're playing sports, working in the garden, even sleeping in an odd position. These injuries come on when you put sudden or prolonged stress on tissues near your joints. A sprain is a tear or stretch in a ligament, the tough tissue band that connects the bones of a joint. Sprains are common in the ankles, knees, wrists, and fingers. A strain (also called a pulled muscle) is a tear or stretch in a muscle or a tendon, the chordlike tissue that connects muscles to bones and to other muscles. Strains often occur in the neck, back, thigh, and calf. People who exercise a lot are prone to these problems, especially runners, who often injure fragile tissues in the knee and ankle. At the other end of the fitness spectrum, people who are out of shape can easily hurt themselves if they jump into exercise too quickly and push themselves too hard. If you have a sprain or strain, you may have pain, swelling, and bruising in the affected area. Mild sprains and strains often need only home care-ice, rest, and gentle exercise. Most of these injuries heal within a few days. But if the muscle or ligament is very painful or badly torn or if the injury involves bone damage, such as a fracture, you'll need to see your doctor. Treatment may include a cast or splint, physical therapy, or even surgery to repair torn ligaments and muscles. Serious cases may take weeks or even months to heal. You can do a lot to prevent sprains and strains by warming up before exercising, by practicing good posture and correct exercise techniques, and by not overdoing it with physical activities. If you already have a sprain or strain, you and your doctor can take steps to make sure it heals properly.

SPRAINS AND STRAINS
WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOURSELF

You can help prevent strains and sprains by taking steps to avoid falls and by making smart choices about exercise and posture. If you've already hurt a muscle or a ligament, you can often ease the pain-and sometimes heal the injury-with pain relievers, ice, and rest. To prevent strains and sprains:
Exercise the right way

Exercising at least three days a week for 20 to 30 minutes each time keeps the joints flexible and strong. Try exercises such as walking, cycling, or dancing that give your whole body a heart-healthy workout and strengthen the joints. Always warm up for about 15 minutes before you do any exercise. The warm-up should include some stretches and low-impact aerobic exercise to loosen up your muscles. If you belong to a gym, ask a trainer there for pointers on how to exercise correctly. He or she can show you how to use weights and equipment like stair steppers without straining your muscles or ligaments. Above all, stay away from activities likely to cause sprains or strains, or find ways to change the exercises you do so that you can prevent injury. Shun squatting or other motions that strain or twist the knee. When you lift weights while standing, don't lock your knees. Remember, don't overdo it. If you feel pain, stop. If you haven't exercised in a while, take a couple of months to work up to 20 or 30 minutes per session.

Message Board Top100 Sites ... SunSmart Sprains and Strains - You Can Take Simple Steps To Minimise Your Winter When winter draws nearer and the cold weather sets in, so do those aches and pains. In the colder weather our blood circulation is not so good, so we feel those aches and twinges even more.
Winter is typically connected with sprains and strains because it is the rugby season and most injuries arise from this particular sport. It is all too common for pharmacists to see an influx of rugby players asking for supports or bandages, or others seeking advice for an injury they got on the sports field.
Sprains and strains are more common in winter because of the high contact sports played during this season. However, the shoulder or back injury arising from gardening is still commonly seen by pharmacists, even in this season. It seems during the colder weather people are more prone to injuries because they have not warmed up properly, or stretched out their muscles before an activity.
A sprain or a strain is a soft tissue injury. The tissue gets inflamed due to the injury and causes pain. Sometimes these injuries can be severe and need to be checked out by your doctor or physiotherapist.

http://home.att.net/~drtinz/muscle.htm
Sprains and Strains We usually think of ankles and wrists. But backs, necks and shoulders suffer from sprains and strains and often take months to treat. A sprain is a stretched ligament. A sprain occurs when a ligament, which holds two bones together is stretched beyond it's normal range of motion. Strains are stretch injuries in muscles. And since muscles make up 40% of bodyweight, a strained muscle can seriously limit motion and activity. Joints are designed to allow us to twist, bend and turn. Every joint has a normal range of motion. When a joint is forced to go farther the result is usually a strain or a sprain. Sports is a common cause of strains and sprains. But we are all vulnerable to these injuries by simply walking, running, tripping and falling. In order to function well muscles and joints need to be warmed up so that they are more flexible. If not warmed up muscles can be strained. Overuse or awkward motions can also strain muscles. A common cause of back pain is lifting without bending at the knees and not using the leg muscles to absorb the weight. Most people recognize a chiropractic doctors expertise in the area of neck and back pain. But more and more patients are turning to chiropractic doctors for treatment of sprained ankles, wrists, shoulders and knees. A variety of treatments are used including manipulation, ice, heat, ultrasound, muscle stimulation and massage.

The ankles support the entire weight of the body and are particularly susceptible to injury. An estimated 2 million patients are treated for ankle sprains and strains annually, and ankle fractures are one of the most common injuries treated by orthopedists. Causes Anyone, from the best-conditioned athlete to the most sedentary person, can incur an ankle injury. Usually, the cause is accidental (e.g., a jogger steps in a pothole, a pregnant woman slips getting out of the car, a softball player slides awkwardly into a base). Overweight people and women who wear high-heeled shoes are at increased risk for ankle injuries. An ankle injury usually involves a sudden, unexpected, loss of balance, resulting in a sharp twist of the ankle. A

We're hoping that this information will keep you in the gym and not in the doctor's office. Lets start with Sprains The joints of our bodies are supported by ligaments which are strong bands of connective tissue that connect one bone to another. A sprain is simply a stretch or tear of the ligaments. The areas of the body that are most vulnerable to sprains are your ankles, knees, and wrist. A sprained ankle can happen when your foot turns inward. This can put extreme tension on the ligaments of your outer ankle and cause the sprain. A sprained knee can be the result of a sudden twist. Wrist sprains most often occur when you fall on an outstretched hand. What is a Strain?

Sprains and Strains S prains and strains are common injuries of the ligaments and muscles. What to look for Sprains, which affect joints, and strains which affect muscles, usually occur after an accident. For a sprain:
  • pain in the joint. swelling of a joint. difficulty moving a joint.
For a strain:
  • sharp pain at injury, followed by stiffness, tenderness, and in some cases, swelling.
Sprains and strains are among the most common injuries. A sprain is the tearing of ligaments, the tissue that connect bones to one another at a joint. The most common sprains are ankles, wrists and thumbs. A strain damages muscle tissue either stretching or tearing it. These injuries are not fatal and can usually heal themselves. If the injury is more severe it may require surgical repair. This type of damage may weaken the muscles or bones and make them susceptible to injuries in the future. A sprain is a stretch or tear in a ligament that connects bones together. Most often sprains occur in the ankle, knee or wrist. Ankle sprains are the most common injury in the US. A strain is a stretch or tear in a muscle or tendon (the tissue that connects muscles to bones). The causes, symptoms, prevention, and treatment of sprains and strains are similar, but not identical. CAUSES:
Sprains typically are the result of a fall, twist, or blow that forces a joint out of its normal position. Sprains occur most frequently in the ankles, knees, wrists and fingers.
Strains usually are caused by twisting or pulling the muscle or tendon. Acute strains are caused by a sudden severe injury or blow to the body, while chronic strains usually are caused by overuse... prolonged, repetitive movements. Strains occur most frequently in the back, hamstrings in back of the thigh, hands, forearms and elbows. SYMPTOMS: Mild sprains and strains respond to self-care. Moderate and severe sprains require a doctor's diagnosis and treatment.
Mild sprains : You may feel a pop or tear, but the ligaments are only slightly overstretched or torn, with no joint instability. There is minimal pain, swelling, and no bruising, or it's slight. You're able to put weight on the joint.

Supporting Research Sprains and strains often result from sports or exercise, but can easily result from any physical activity. Sprains result from an injury to a ligament (the connective tissue that links bones together at joints), most often in the ankle, knee, elbow, or wrist. Strains are tears in muscle tissue, commonly occurring in the muscles that support the neck, thigh, groin, and ankle. Signs and Symptoms Sprains and strains cause pain and swelling. You may have joint instability or disability if the injury is serious, involving a muscle or ligament tear. What Causes It? Sprains generally result from a twisting force applied to a joint while it is bearing weight, which causes the ligament to stretch beyond its natural limit. Muscle strains occur when the weight load on a muscle is greater than what the weakest part of the muscle can bear. Strains usually occur during activities that require a muscle to be stretched and bear weight at the same time. You are at risk for a sprain or strain if you do the following.
  • Exercise without warming up properly Use athletic equipment that does not fit properly Participate in sports and activities that you are not conditioned for
What to Expect at Your Provider's Office Your health care provider may take an X ray. If your injury is severe, he or she may also order an MRI. You may need to have the injured limb wrapped in an elastic bandage or put in a soft cast.

Sprains and Strains Sprains and strains are among the most common injuries, ranging from twisted ankles to aching backs. A sprain injures ligaments, the tough, fibrous bands of tissue that connect bones to one another at a joint. A strain damages muscle tissue, leaving muscles or the tendons that attach muscle to bone, stretched or torn. Given adequate time and rest, most sprained joints or strained muscles will heal themselves. But severe tearing or complete rupture of the affected tissues usually requires surgical repair. And damage caused by a sprain can leave the bones in the affected joint improperly aligned, or the ligaments so stretched and weakened that the joint is particularly vulnerable to future injury. Sprains, which affect joints, and strains, also called muscle pulls, usually occur after a fall or sudden movement that pulls or twists a part of the body violently. For a sprain:
