Under normal circumstances, when both the eyes have good vision and they are aligned properly, they focus on the same object. Each of the eyes sends picture of the same object, viewed from a slightly different angle. These two images reach the brain, where they are fused to form a single three-dimensional picture with depth perception. This is known as binocular single vision. Six muscles control the movement of each eye. Each of these muscle acts along with its counterpart in the other eye to keep both eyes aligned properly. A loss of coordination between the muscles of the two eyes leads to misalignment. This misalignment may be the same in all directions of gaze, or in some conditions the misalignment may be more in one direction of gaze. Squint may be Paralytic Squint Means one of the muscle attached to the eyes is paralyzed and the eye affected may turn in/out/up/down depending on the muscle involved i.e. the eye movement is restricted in the direction of the action of the paralyzed muscle. This can be caused by direct trauma to the muscle as for e.g. injury during forceps delivery or any other injury. It may also be caused by certain nerve palsies, which in turn may be caused by peripheral neuritis or diseases of the CNS, e.g. meningitis, encephalitis etc. Treatment of paralytic squint depends on the cause and many a time paralytic squint may not be completely cured. In such cases spectacles with prisms are prescribed.

A squint or strabismus occurs when the eyes are not aligned properly, e.g. one eye may turn inwards, outwards, up or down. When one eye turns the eyes can no longer work together as a pair and a squint develops. This may occur at any age and commonly occurs when someone is longsighted. A squint is a binocular vision problem. Untreated squints can lead to loss of vision (lazy eye) in the squinting eye and should always be assessed by an Orthoptist even if only seen some of the time. A child is never too young to be examined or for treatment to commence. Often, the sooner treatment is started, the better the results. It is never too late to treat a squint which is cosmetically unacceptable and glasses, prisms or surgery can give good results in many cases. When do squints develop? Squints can occur at any age. A baby can be born with a squint or develop one soon after birth. This is called Infantile squint. Sometimes a baby has a pseudo squint where the shape of the face may give the appearance of a squint, although there is not a true deviation of the eyes. In these cases, the appearance will improve as the child grows. A baby will not grow out of a true squint and should be assessed at the earliest opportunity. Where the eye wanders some of the time and appears straight otherwise, this is still a squint and can be the sign of an underlying problem. What causes a squint?

Squint (strabismus) Adult squint printable page Adult squint Botulinum Toxin is a treatment often used for adult squint. Botulinum Toxin is injected into the muscles of the affected eye, causing a paralysis of the muscle which corrects the squint temporarily. When you come into the strabismus clinic, you will have an examination by an orthoptist as well as one of our ophthalmologists. If the treatment is thought to be of value, you will be asked to sign a consent form and your name will be added to the list for treatment that day. If you are not clear about anything, do ask the doctor who sees you to explain further, before signing the consent form. The treatment itself is very quick and simple. Local anaesthetic drops are given to numb the muscles of the eye. You will then have some wires placed on your forehead and these are connected to an amplifier and loudspeaker. This is to allow the exact site of the injection to be carefully monitored by recording the electrical activity of the muscle and this can be heard through the loudspeaker during the injection. After the operation, you will be asked if you prefer a pad on the eye or to wear your own glasses. The eye is numb after the drops, so should be protected for about 2 hours in case something blows into your eye without your knowledge. Some patients have an ache in the eye for a while after the injection. If this is not better after an hour, take whatever medication you would normally take for a headache.
