Vomiting after Squint Surgery
Nausea and vomiting are unpleasant but common postoperative complications. It is a particular problem for squint correction, because many of these procedures are carried out as day-cases and vomiting can occur as long as 40 hours after operation. In one study of more than 300 outpatients having squint correction, as many as 38% of overnight admissions resulted from vomiting.
Measures which reduced postoperative vomiting, both early and late after operation, would not only benefit the children and their parents, but would also reduce stress on the providers.
Prophylaxis
In these circumstances effective prophlaxis would seem to be a good idea. Is prophylaxis effective?
Some answers come from a systematic review of the prevention of vomiting after paediatric strabismus surgery [1]. Information was available on 2033 children in 27 randomised controlled studies in which drugs from eight different pharmacological classes were used. Because vomiting is an "all-or-nothing" phenomenon, information was available in dichotomous (yes/no) form, allowing calculations of numbers-needed-to-treat (NNT). Vomiting was examined early (up to six hours after operation) and late (up to 48 hours).
Results
Because of the large number of drugs and doses used, there were few treatment groups where sufficiently large numbers of children had been studied to warrant any certainty about results. Ondansetron, for instance, was studied in one trial with 30 patients, though the data for these studies is given in the report [1].

Non-squint Monocle
Loosen that brow
[vote for against Like many slightly short-sighted people, only one of my eyes is dysfunctional. I don't want the burden of being bespectacled, but the alternative is too hideous to contemplate. Unless your over 70, or an underground scientist, or an English gent in the courtrooms of the 1890s, a monocle just isn't a fitting fashion garment in this day and age. I believe this is largely to do with the 'squint factor', as monocles must necessarily be clasped twixt brow and preopercular. I thought about various monocle attachment methods. Perhaps a sticky rim (so to speak), which fixes snugly to the underside of the eye socket. Or some kind of hair-clasp attached to the top of the monocle, to grapple the eyebrow. However I believe the best method, what with today's predilection for piercing, is to drill a small hole into the side of the nose and simply screw in the monocle. Easy, secure, and removes the side-effect of a Popeye-magnitude squint.

What is squint (strabismus)?
Squint is a misalignment of the two eyes so that both the eyes are not looking in the same direction. This misalignment may be constant, being present throughout the day, or it may appear sometimes and the rest of the time the eyes may be straight.
It is a common condition among children. It may also occur in adults.
What causes squint?
The exact cause of squint is not really known. The movement of each eye is controlled by six muscles. Each of these muscle acts along with its counterpart in the other eye to keep both the eyes aligned properly. A loss of coordination between the muscles of the two eyes leads to misalignment. This misalignment may be the same in all directions of gaze, or in some conditions the misalignment may be more in one direction of gaze, e.g., in squint due to nerve palsy.
Sometimes a refractive error hypermetropia (long sight) may lead to inward deviation of the eye. Poor vision in an eye because of some other eye disease like cataract, etc. may also cause the eye to deviate. Therefore it is important in all the cases of squint, especially in children, to have a thorough eye checkup to rule out any other cause of loss of vision.

Warner Bros. Records Christian Division announces the addition of Oklahoma based rock band, Radial Angel, to their Squint Entertainment roster.
Comprised of Jared Taber (vocals, guitars), Tommy Perkins (drums), Jeremy Dolezel (guitar) and Eddie Jones (Bass), Radial Angel has had notable success as an independent band. Their first indie project produced the surprise hit single "down", that went to #14 on Progressive Airplay Journal's Rock Top 50 chart.
"It has been an amazing journey for us so far and we're really looking forward to our future with Squint," says Taber. "I know God has His hand in this whole thing and I feel that there are great things to come for us as a band and Squint as a label."
With two successful independent albums and constant touring under their belt, Radial Angel is poised to release their debut project, One More Last Time, on March 11, 2003. Produced by Chris Freels (Charlie Hall, Jamie Smith, the Passion projects) and Kevin Lively (Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots), the band's first national release deals with such difficult topics as divorce, rape, suicide and purity. "One More Last Time is a very honest album about things that have happened to us or others close to us," says Jones. "We hope that these experiences help people to relate with our music and they are moved to get to know Christ better because of it. Our main goal is for the album to move the listener both emotionally and spiritually."

Squint's English Corner
EDWARD JENNER - wynalazca szczepionki
Edward Jenner ) was an English physician, the discoverer of vaccination. He was born in Berkeley, Gloucesteshire, on May 17. Jenner studied medicine in London at St. George's Hospital. He began practice in Berkeley in 1773 when he was 24 - years old. Edward Jenner liked to observe and investigate things ever since he was a boy. This led to the discovery of vaccination against smallpox. Today cases of smallpox are very rare because almost every baby in the world, when it is about seven months old, is vaccinated against this disease. The vaccination is effective four about seven years.
In Washington's day, the whole world feared smallpox. One out of every five person in London carried the marks of the disease on his face. It was the same in the other cities of Europe. But these were the people who recovered from the disease. In the XVIII-th century, smallpox was one of the chief causes of death. Young and old were attacked. Children of poor parents died before they were five years old; of all the diseases, smallpox was the worst. The disease had been common for centuries in China, India and Turkey. The Turks had discovered that a person could escape a serious attack of smallpox by being infected with a mild from of the disease. In India children were wrapped in the clothes of a smallpox patient to give them a mild attack. Many people felt that it was better to catch the disease during a mild epidemic than to take a chance during a severe epidemic later.

(Careful: it might be contagious). I'm sick.
I've picked up some bug or other that seemed innocuous enough at first, but has gone on to kick my ass around the block. It's a shame, since I've been so cocky lately about the Superman-type strength of last fall's flu shot. "Four months and not a sniffle! Beat that!" I purred to my Dad. He won't get the shot since he believes all the propoganda about it really being some evil concoction of germs. I've had to bite my lip as I listened to his dire warnings, secure in the knowledge that back in the fall I'd armed myself with a platoon of wee soldiers, all working 24/7 for the good of my health. (I can't help but think of the movie Innerspace when I read that last sentence). Heh. Imagine my surprise when I found myself clearing away that annoying catch in my throat for the umpteenth time last Monday. What the hell? A germ got through? Inconceivable! Then came the inevitable march of symptoms: the stuffiness, nausea, lethargy and the phlegm, oh the phlegm! I've never been able to understand how you can be completely filled with mucus, yet you manage to cough up a lung because your throat is so dry. Anyone? Anyone? I made it into work on Tuesday and was quite convincing with the healthy image I portrayed; no one had a clue that I was infecting them with every breath. Today was another matter. I surreptitiously snuck Halls and drank mug after mug of scalding tea, trying to reopen a throat that was making every effort to close up entirely. We had a baker on the show this morning and she left behind a huge three-layer cake which we dug into at preceisely 9:05. I got the brilliant idea to blame my dizziness on the massive sugar rush I got from eating a piece the size of Detroit.

Summary: The technical terms for the two commonest causes of an eye which isn't straight are strabismus and amblyopia, the lazy eye. This is relatively common and children and adults as well.

Today, uncrossing the squint, a major issue for many parents and not a few adults too; for Science Week, Australian research into how a herpes virus hides from the immune system to come back and taunt us in the future; the link between organ transplantation and resisting HIV infection, and - in this week's edition of the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, there's good news for fish eaters.
Norman Swan : Having a squint is a relatively common problem in both children and adults. The technical terms for the two commonest causes of an eye which isn't straight are strabismus and amblyopia - the lazy eye.
Last week the World President of the International Strabismological Association was in Australia. He's Emilio Campos, Professor of Opthalmology at the University of Bologna in Italy. And I caught him to find out what was new in an area which worries many parents and not a few grown-ups.
Emilio Campos : Squint means that one eye turns in a direction different from the one of the fixing eye, and the eye can turn in, out, down and up. As far as lazy eye is concerned, the lazy eye means the fact that one eye did not develop properly vision during the plastic period of the visual system. This can be due to the fact that one eye was squinting, or there was something which is called cataract. All this type of situation

Squint is also called as strabismus, or commonly ' cross-eyed'. It is the condition in which there is abnormal alignment of the eyes. Anatomical details of eye muscles There may be - Esotropia - eye turned inwards. Exotropia -eye turned outwards. Hypotropia - eye directed downwards. Hypertropia -eye directed upwards.
Management -
Role of Parents By 3-4 months the baby's eyes should start working together. Look intently at the child. Is the point of light you see in each eye symmetrical? Does the child keep his head tilted? If the answers to above is yes, the child may be having squint. And you have smartly detected it early! Squint occurring in children should be shown to an eye doctor as early as possible. This is because vision development can occur only in childhood. Once a lazy eye develops, it is very difficult to set it right, after some time has elapsed. Even though, surgery may be done to reposition the eyes, the visual ability cannot be regained. Methods used are - Patching one eye, so the lazy eye may start functioning.

Remember, when you were a kid, how you had harassed and teased the new boy, whose eyes crossed? you never knew where exactly he was looking! When the eyes do not move in a normal coordinated manner, it results in a ' crossed eye' or Squint It means some part of the eye movement machinery is defective. The defect may be in the inner eye, or in the muscle, or in the nerve, or in the brain. Though we have two eyes we see one image! Have you ever thought of thanking God for that? This miraculous gift is due to complex processing in the brain. It is called as Binocular vision We have an innate desire to see one image. If there is a squint, two eyes will see different images. This leads to ' diplopia ' or double vision. But if squint occurs in a child, the brain learns to avoid 'seeing' one of the images and we get a ' lazy eye '.
